Genius Hour Interviews
Genius hour is one hour a week that you
get to work on a project of your choosing
at school. Genius hour is about imagination where you can bring ideas to life.
Also, it’s about expressing what you
love. Every genius hour project has a
question that you want to learn about.
Genius hour is something that takes a
long time because the question is supposed to be something that you can’t find
an answer to right away. Genius hour
projects can be anything from learning
about sea turtles to building a model of
the Eiffel Tower.
Now I will talk about a few students’ genius hour projects from 4th grade, 3rd
grade and 5th grade.
Kevin’s Origami Genius Hour Project
Kevin is in 4th grade and he is doing his
genius hour project on origami. I’m surprised he is almost finished because Kevin only uses 30 minutes every Friday.
Also, he is doing another project developing a card game. Kevin’s inspiration to
do origami for his genius hour project
was when he saw his brother playing
with paper and Kevin thought of origami.
Kevin’s favorite part so far is making the
origami. I think he is getting it done so
fast because two people are helping him,
which is fine. Many people get help or
are in groups. Kevin says it is fun because there are interesting facts that he is
learning about origami. For example, origami originated in Japan in the 1600’s.
Kevin is going to do his presentation on a
poster. Wishing him the best.
Evie and Sarah’s Genius Hour Project
Sarah and Evie are in 5th grade, and their
genius hour project is on a Wi-Fi signal
enhancer, which they call the Wi-Fi
Flower. They are finished, but they have-
n’t presented it yet. They were
working on another genius hour
project, and the Wi-Fi wasn’t
working, so they thought of how
they could fix it. Their favorite
part was testing it and having it be
successful. They said it was fun
but sometimes annoying, because
it was hard to get parts, and they
needed approval from the school. I
asked them if it was hard in the
beginning, and they said yes. They
are going to explain how they
made it and how the signal enhancer works in their presentation.
Sounds like a blast!
Tyler and Sophia
Tyler and Sophia are in 3rd grade,
and their genius hour project is on
The Underground Railroad. They
are still working on it, and they
have been working on it for 3
weeks. They must be getting a lot
of facts. They got inspired from
their homework, which I find cool.
Their favorite part of learning
about The Underground Railroad
is that the slaves escape. Mr. Hand
is their teacher, so he helped them.
Something interesting is that it
wasn’t hard for them. They’re going to present the project on a
poster and flash cards. Sound like
an exciting genius hour project!

Mealworms Make the Most Out of
Styrofoam
A good way to start off this summer is
with good news. And what good news is
that? You are about to read it. Recently
(about 5 months ago), scientists discovered that a certain kind of mealworm is
able to digest (eat ) Styrofoam. This is an
essential (important) discovery, as the
Styrofoam is non-biodegradable (it cannot
be recycled).
What is a mealworm?
Mealworms are the larval (baby) form of
the mealworm beetle, or Tenebrio Molitor
(the scientific name for the mealworm
beetle), a species of darkling beetle. Like
all holometabolic insects (insects that undergo full metamorphism), they go through
four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.
Recently, scientists discovered that mealworms can “eat” Styrofoam.
Who exactly found out about the mealworms?
This fantastic discovery was established
by scientists from Stanford University and
China’s Beihang University. They saw that
the mealworms digest all the Styrofoam
without hurting any other predators. The
scientists exposed about one-hundred
mealworms to Styrofoam, only to discover
that they can digest it easily.
Do the mealworms “like” Styrofoam?
Well, not only do they “love” it, they devour it. The scientists discovered that the
mealworms can eat the Styrofoam with no
long-term effects. Not only this, but the
predators that eat the mealworm suffered
no harm from their new diet.
Why is this discovery important?
So many boxes and packages are packed
with Styrofoam to the brim! Being so hard
to recycle, if we make sure these meal-
worms reproduce and keep healthy, the level of Styrofoam in the garbage dump will
eventually decrease. This is a major step in
global recycling and something that could
help with global warming.
The scientists have taken one step forward
in global recycling. This truly was an amazing piece of information, even for Ironia
Ink!

How to…
Make your own comics!
Hello all you people out there who love comics and want to make your own! This short
step by step guide will help you show your
super hero in action or your princess eating
cupcakes in her castle. You can make all your
dreams come to life! The only limit is your
imagination.
Yeah I know what you’re thinking, “She’s
good at art and is going to tell me to draw in
a box and be sad because my art is not
good.” But the only way to make your art
better is to draw all the time and you will
SLOWLY get better. Don’t be discouraged
by your art skills, start with stick figures if
you have to! But never ever say you can’t do
anything. Now let’s get started.
Step one:
Think of a story or just a funny thing that
happened that day. You want to know at
least a rough idea of what your story is
about. Also, start putting thought into your
character design, make it original.
You should have a vivid image of your character. Try drawing it as best you can. If
something is closer make it bigger. Also,
make farther back things darker.
Put speaking bubbles after you write the
words that your character is saying as
well. Don’t forget to make your characters
interesting.
Step five:
Now you have a pretty good idea of your
first panel as the panels go on add characters, settings and make a good story come
to life. Just keep repeating the steps and
soon you’ll have a great comic strip for
everyone to enjoy!
By Sarah A.
Step two:
Grab a piece of paper and draw a square using a ruler to make your lines straight. I
know it’s a pain but trust me. It makes your
work look a lot better! Also, don’t worry if
it’s not perfect. It doesn’t have to be!
Step three:
Think about where your characters are and
how the story should start. You may want to
put a box at the top of your first panel and
explain who your characters are and where
they are.
Step four:

Dragon Story
Dragon Story is a game where you
train dragons. You breed them to get
more. Almost all dragons can be
bought with gold, which is rare.
Some, you can buy with coins which
are easier to get. To have dragons you
need a nest. The first nest you buy is
for a little amount of coins.
Eggs are bred. Some are very rare
but some are really not. Once the
dragons hatch they look cute, but
when they get leveled up, they look
fierce. The way you level up is you
need to take care of them and feed
them. Sometimes with eggs you get
some that are mega rare. I personally
get some that are really good.
I forgot to tell you something you can
gain levels to be able to get more and
more dragons.

Zootopia
Do you like animals? Do you like surprises? If you do, you will LOVE Zootopia. Zootopia is an interesting
movie because it has all kinds of animals like: rabbits foxes, giraffes, mice
and oxen.
These are different kinds of animals,
and they get along. There are no people. In the beginning of the movie,
there was a girl rabbit named Judy
Hopps. She wanted to become a police officer, and she did. Judy Hopps
became the first rabbit officer.
In the middle of the movie, some animals start going “savage.” So everyone
is trying to catch all of the “savage”
animals. Judy is getting very wary
about all the animals, so she gets help
from her friend Nick Wild, the fox.
Nick finds out that Judy doesn’t trust
him. At the end of the movie, Judy
finds out what is causing the animals
to go “savage.” Judy goes to Nick because she needs his help, and they
solve the case.
This was an inspiring movie to me because even when people doubted Judy,
she still went on and achieved her
dream. You will have to see the movie
to find out who causes the animals
to go savage and why. I honestly recommend Zootopia for all ages.

A Holiday Treat
“I’m so bored,” Julia groaned as she flopped down in a chair in the living room.
“But it’s Christmas Eve!” Grace protested as she jumped us from her place on the couch across
from Julia, “How can you be bored?”
“So? Yes, it’s Christmas Eve, but it definitely doesn’t seem like it. You’re reading that dumb
book…” Julia narrowed her eyes at her friend and crossed her arms.
“Excuse me, but you read this ‘dumb book’ too! Do something with mom,” Grace replied as she
sat down with her book again and made a motion with her hand that signaled for Julia to get lost.
Julia walked over to Grace. “Only if you come with me,” she told her.
“Girls! Come here,” a voice from the kitchen demanded.
“What mom?!” Julia questioned her mother as she arrived in the kitchen. She spoke in a tone that
should’ve told her mom she wasn’t interested.
“I’ve just made red velvet cupcakes,” Julia’s mom announced, ignoring the hint in Julia’s voice,
“Come try some!” She put a cupcake on each of their plates.

The girls sat down and started to munch. “Yummy!” Julia exclaimed with her mouth full.
“Yeah! These are really good!” Grace added.
Julia’s mom was beaming.
“Christmas Eve isn’t boring anymore, thanks to this holiday treat!” Julia was thinking out loud.
“Great. Now can I get back to my book?” Grace begged.
“No! I’m not bored again yet, so don’t ruin it!” Julia responded.
“Then at least let me have another cupcake. They’re so good!” Grace requested.
“Fine. I can’t disagree with that.” Julia replied.

Her brother, Max, looked up at her from where he had been helping with the cake. “Okay, I

Just then he slammed his elbow down on the counter, but it landed on the cake! Chocolate
frosting splattered everywhere, and Sophia suddenly lost her good attitude.
“So…you’re helping with the cake, huh? Well then…where’s the cake?” She challenged
him and then narrowed her eyes.

She hadn’t yet seen Sophia. “Max!” she demanded. “How is Sophia going to have a cake

“Yeah, before I find out,” Sophia echoed.
“Oh, hi honey. We’ll fix this…somehow. Max, clean up,” she commanded. “Right now,”
she added.
“But mom…” Max started.
“CLEAN UP!!!” His mother shrieked, losing her patience.
Max jumped back and started to clean.
“Sophia, I’ll make angel cake, your favorite,” her mom reassured her.
So Sophia waited, and waited, and waited some more. She was worried that her mom wouldn’t be able to bake the cake in time. But then she heard a relieving noise.
Ding! Ding! Went the oven, telling everyone that the cake was done.
“The cake! It’s ready!” Sophia exclaimed and bolted into the kitchen.
Sophia put a bit of frosting on her finger and licked it. When she tasted it, she felt like she
was in the clouds with heavenly angels all around her singing “Hallelujah!”
What she didn’t know was that she was twirling around the kitchen like a crazy ballerina.
“Sophia! Earth to Sophia? Are you with us?” her mom called to her.
“I got this,” Max claimed.
As Sophia danced over to him, he popped a balloon right over her head. Sophia came back
to reality and saw her mom examining her head.
“Sophia!” she exclaimed, “You’re okay!”
“Of course I am, but I love this angel cake!”
Her mom and Max looked at each other and laughed.

A limerick is a poem where the 1 , 2 , and 5 line
end with a rhyming syllable and have 8 or 9 syllables (but usually 8). The 3rd and 4th lines also have
rhyming syllable at the end and have 5 or 6 syllables (but usually 5). Here are some examples:
There once was a small girl named Mia
Loved to throw it against a wall
Fell into a coop
And started to droop
For his mommy he started to bawl
Bobby was a Hollywood star
She had a big, giant idea
He had a very awesome car
She snuck on a plane
He was very groovy
Then landed in Spain

And then went straight to Ikea
And he also was a rock star
We hope you can write some limericks now that

Interesting and Fun Websites
What type of websites do you like? Websites about music? Cooking? Sports? Or do you just like
games? Well, you’re probably missing out on a lot of awesome websites that fit you perfectly.
If you’re a music person like we are, www.noteflight.com would be a great website for you. This site
allows you to create the music that you want. You can click on notes and put them in a staff. Then,
you can play the music you’ve created and adjust it as you like. Maybe you’re a pianist, and you absolutely love a song except for this one part that keeps on bothering you. Or maybe you’ve always
wanted to make your own music, and you’ve never gotten a chance. Well, noteflight.com would suit
you perfectly.
Imagine all of the music you could make in a matter of days! And always remember, the music would
be your song and the composer would be you. If you didn’t want to make your own song, you could
copy a musical score belonging to an original composer. You just need to put the composer’s name
in the proper section with remix in parenthesis. Well, just try the link to the demo below and tell us
how you liked it. Here’s an example of an awesome composition that a note flight member made.
https://www.noteflight.com/scores/view/162c716cea200b953f5454951bfb2450cb4b8a84. Amazing, isn’t it…
Well, I’ve got to say, everyone isn’t a musician so, if you like sports, http://jumpbunch.com/school-age/
would make you feel perfectly at home. Even if you have a younger sibling, your little brother or sister could play! Anyway, this site allows kids from age 6-12 to play. We thought that kids shouldn’t be
obsessed by the internet and online games, so we thought this website could be the end of the conflict between mothers and kids about doing something other than spending all your time on the computer. This website gives you ideas for exercising and if you feel inspired, go ahead and try it!
Really, no one will like everything that we showed you, so maybe you’re an artsy person. I love to
draw but I especially love kawaii. Take a look at this,
Isn’t it adorbs? Well, if you want to know how to draw this adorable gummy bear or anything else,
like marshmallows, basketballs, pianos, or anything you can think of, go to
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=fun2draw, where imagination is the only thing you
need! The only thing you have to know is how to draw the eyes, and you can put them on anything
you want! Mei Yu, (The amazing artist who came up with this fab style!) will take you step by step to
being an amazing artist! If your first try doesn’t work, as it didn’t for me, don’t give up! These are
really Fun2draw!
Did any of our websites pop out to you? Pick one or two and say, “This site I will conquer with my
awesomeness, power, and my personality!” Go ahead! Don’t be ashamed! Don’t forget to check out a
site! I honestly loved fun2draw and note flight. But not enough to beat my love for rainbow roses!

Rubik’s Cube Guide
A new trend sweeping through Ironia is Rubik’s cubes. All the kids down the hall have one, and these
colored cubes are taking over! These puzzles can come in many different forms, and the goal is to attain
all the same color on each side. Here are some handy tips to keep in mind while solving one of these
mind-bending puzzles. But wait! There’s more! Worried that you don’t have a Rubik’s cube? You can visit
a Rubik’s cube simulator online for free!*
Tips:
When solving a cube, persistence is key!
Start with an easy Rubik’s cube, and then move on to more difficult ones.
Make a cross in the center of a cube to get started.
Instead of mixing up the whole cube, go to YouTube and look up Rubik’s cube algorithm.
Go to an expert to help.
As you may recall in paragraph one, we said that there are online Rubik’s cubes simulators. But which
ones are genuine? Here are some trustworthy sites: http://www.coolmath-games.com/0-rubikscube, ruwix.com/online-puzzle-simulators/3x3x3-rubiks-cube-simulator.php. These sites may be fun to go on, but
unlike the real thing, they don’t save your progress, so remember that the real thing is better!
