PASTOR’S CORNER
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This weekend we honor all those who have given their lives defending our
country and our hard-won freedoms. We pray for them and their families.
This Monday at 9:00 a.m. we will have a special Mass for all veterans and
their families. I hope you can join us.
In this Sunday’s Gospel (John 14: 15-21) Jesus tells his disciples that he
will send another Advocate to be with them always. Jesus was the first
Advocate and once he had risen from the dead he sent the Holy Spirit.
Jesus said: “He remains with you, and will be in you.”
One commentary tells us that the Greek term “Advocate/Paraclete” is a
legal term which means defense attorney. It can also mean spokesman,
mediator, intercessor, comforter, and consoler. Within the Gospel of
John it means teacher, witness to Jesus, and a prosecutor of the world;
one who represents the continuing presence of Jesus who has returned
to the Father.
After the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead, he entered the locked
room where the disciples were and told them: “Peace be with you. As the
Father has sent me, so I send you.” He breathed on them and said to them,
“Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and
whose sins you retain are retained.” (John 20: 19-23)
The Spirit came to the Apostles after Jesus had ascended to the Father.
This time the Spirit came as “tongues as of fire, which parted and came
to rest on each one of them.” (Acts 2:1-4) The Apostles were able to
powerfully proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to people speaking
many different languages.
The Spirit empowered Philip to heal and cast out demons. (Acts 8: 5-8)

military. The book is in the church

PARISH CENTER
Closed Monday, May 26
In observance of Memorial Day
The Spirit came through the laying on of hands of Peter and John to the
newly baptized Christians in Samaria. (Acts 8: 14-17)
We received the Holy Spirit when we were baptized. We received the Holy
Spirit when we were confirmed. Each and every Sacrament has a “laying
on of hands” in which we receive the Holy Spirit.
Isn’t it wonderful the numerous ways the Holy Spirit comes to us and
fills us?
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the
fire of your love.

Your input is invaluable before
moving forward with this work.

ST. BONAVENTURE BLOOD DRIVE
Friday, June 13
12:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Parish Hall
SIGN-UP AFTER THE SUNDAY MORNING MASSES JUNE 1 AND 8 behind the
church, near the parking lot or you may also make an appointment by phone: Irene at
840-8571 or Lynn at 846-3359x478. Your blood is urgently needed.
Did You Know?
Type “O” blood is the universal donor type, meaning it can be transfused to anyone in
case of emergency. In an emergency, time often does not allow for blood typing, making
it crucial to have an adequate supply of type “O” negative available. The blood used in
an emergency needs to be on the shelves before an emergency occurs. The two or
three days it takes to process blood may be just too long for a patient in need. The threat
of natural and man-made disasters makes blood shortages even more alarming.
The American Red Cross imports 32% of the type “O”
blood supplied to Southern California hospitals from
other parts of the United States. Approximately 45%
of the U.S. population has type “O” blood. Type “O”
patients can only receive type “O” blood.
If you have type “O” blood please consider donating
a pint.
BETHLEHEM
CHRISTIAN FAMILIES
May31-June 1
The Bethlehem Chrisian
Families will be here to
sell their HAND-CARVED
RELIGIOUS
ARTICLES
made of OLIVE WOOD.
The sale of these precious
articles supports their Church
Mission which is to maintain the
roots and the existence of the Christian
families who are struggling to remain in
Bethlehem. At least 90% of the funds
raised through these sales go directly
to Christians living in the Behlehem
area. The proceeds will create more
work which will help them to survive
and stay in the Holy Land, since they
have no other source of income and
are dependent on the olive wood
industry. Thank you for your support
and generosity.
H.O.P.E. OFFICE
Help Wanted

program, which assists those in need
within our community. We are in need
of HELP and are looking for volunteers
willing to give of their time and make
some new friends along the way.
We need help with the following
positions:
• Work a shift in the office (two shifts
per day 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or
12:30-3:00 p.m., Monday-Friday) at
the desk (process paperwork with
clients), pantry (fill food orders for
clients) and/or clothing room (accept
donations, sort and hang clothing).
• Pick-up food once a week from
Albertsons or Trader Joe’s
(approximately 2 hours and must
have a large car or truck).
• Help supervise a clothing distribution
program that runs simultaneously
with a food distribution program on
the 2nd Saturday of the month.
For more info or if you would like to

You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Just so, your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds and
glorify your heavenly Father.

9th Annual St. Bonaventure Catholic School
Golf Tournament Registration Form
June 16th at SeaCliff Country Club
The St Bonaventure Golf Tournament started in 2006 as a way to raise money to help support educational
programs, operating expense, tuition assistance and offset the difference between tuition and what it actually
cost to educate a child at SBS. Now in its 9th year it has grown to be much more than a fundraiser and has now
become a great way to bring Alumni, new families and current families together. These and other funds raised by
the SBS Gala are used solely for the purpose of supporting our school. Even if you cannot join us on the golf
course, part of the fun of this annual event is the silent and live auction that features unique sports memorabilia,
exciting travel and entertainment packages plus the popular Helicopter Ball Drop. For more information, please
call the Advancement Office at (714) 846 – 2472 ext. 115 or Stephen Ross, SBS Golf Chair at (714) 270-6917
