After 25 Years

As happens every three years or
so, the current extension of SHARE’s
original lease expires on December
31st. It is a good time to look around at
building condition, neighborhood trends,
operating costs, and rental rates. Each
time, in the past, there have been compelling reasons to stay at Lawrence
Street. Now, there are strong arguments to move.
I’m not sure what happened in the
first 45 winters and summers since the
place was built, but in the last 25 years,
the warehouse has survived 300 or so
SHARE distributions, a few hurricanes,
and an earthquake. The freezer and chill
box both leak and break down, and their
age and inefficiency make for extremely
high electric bills. Contractors tell us
the roof is now too thin to walk on, so
they can only apply light weight patches
that last a few weeks or months. Then,
there’s the matter of rent. By signing a
new lease at Lawrence Place, SHARE
and Catholic Charities would be committing to a 60% increase in monthly rent,
which didn’t make sense, especially in a
building of this condition.
At first, when we looked around we
could not find affordable space large
enough in location central to all of our
SHARE Host Sites. Then, in late October, the perfect property came on the
market. The Hubbard Road address offers a terrific location, good open space,
fantastic and spacious loading docks at
the back of the building, natural light in
the offices and the warehouse, plenty
of parking out front, and more office
space than we have now. The landlord
agreed to a discounted rent because of
the work we do, and a move began to
feel possible. The biggest challenge:
no refrigeration.
Contractors provided bids on new
units and installation, which the Catholic
Charities Board approved at their December 8th meeting. We are honored
that the entire Catholic Charities team is
behind us, so willing to invest the money
to create our new home. The expense
is significant, as is the amount of time it
will take to install, so the plan is to operate from mobile refrigeration units until
construction is complete.
As I write this, the lease is being finalized for signatures, so now you can
see why the move is happening so fast!
I’m not sure it has fully sunk in with us,
even with all the packing going on. Naturally, our primary focus is on the Christmas Distribution.
Leaving Lawrence Place will be
difficult after so many wonderful years
here, yet we are committed to a bright
future in a fresh space. Our office
move should be complete by January
6th, 2016, and the warehouse should
be settled by the 8th. No date on the
new refrigeration since we haven’t even
taken possession of the warehouse yet.
Still, we are all working hard to make
Hubbard Road a warm and welcoming
reality as quickly as possible. And, we
look forward to seeing each of you at
SHARE’s new home, in the New Year.

Why Move?

Change is exciting, and it can also be a bit
scary. Moving a facility after more than 25
years in the same place, no matter how you
look at it, is an adventure! Some may ask
why move at all?
Our current warehouse has served us well
for many years. We distribute tens of thousands of pounds of food through it every
month. Why do we need a new warehouse?
“If it ain’t broke, why fix it?” In fact, many
elements of our existing warehouse are
“broke.”

Since our lease was up for renewal, we decided it was time to think about moving. As anybody who has been to our warehouse recently
knows, it has been showing its age. The roof
leaks. Our aging refrigerator is inefficient and
sometimes breaks down. There are also some
problems (like inadequate parking, and needing a shoe horn to position an 18-wheeler at a
dock) that we’ve simply learned to live with.
The new warehouse offers improvements
across the board, and will make our monthly
distributions much easier for host sites. Parking will be more plentiful and convenient. And
the entrance has no stairs. Also, there will be a
real reception area at the front of the building.
Paperwork processing and payment will take
place in the offices in the front, while the food
distribution takes place at the loading docks in
the back; a much smoother process with much
better flow.

Because we deal with meat and fresh fruits
and vegetables, the quality of the food is extremely important. Here’s where the new facility will really shine. We will be installing a
new, state of the art, refrigeration system. It
will be more reliable and more efficient. The
new equipment will help us save money on
our monthly electric bill.
Finally, there is the location. It is only four
miles from our existing site and more accessible from a number of main roads. For some
of our customers it might add a few minutes
and for others it may be closer. But we will be Total Packages: staying in the same general neighborhood.

A.M.E. Church in Bowie, Maryland,
led by Pastor Rev. Dr. Jonathan L.
Weaver, has been a SHARE participant for nearly 23 years. The
founders were Daisy Stith, Eric Williams, Theresa Grant, Hamilton,
Laura Miller, Gerri Lynch, Elizabeth
Coates and Robert Coates.
The SHARE team at GMN has
enlisted a remarkable group of people in support of the mission of providing fresh, healthy food to those in
the community who need it. There
are more than a dozen devoted
members who pick up, bag, drive,
and help coordinate all of the activities that make the SHARE Ministry
a great success.

At one distribution, a SHARE customer arrived with three young children. One of
the children was a shy little girl who watched quietly as the SHARE team brought
out the food for her family. She looked at Vickie with her eyes glowing like it was
Christmas morning with lots of gifts under the tree and asked with wonder “is all
this food for us?”
Vickie said, “Yes, sweetheart, it is.” The little girl smiled broadly.
When all three of them got to the door, they came running back and surrounded
Vickie, putting their arms around her waist in a big hug. Then, they turned and
left waving at the SHARE team. As Vickie said, “That moment made us realize this
is why we get up early in the morning and volunteer with this wonderful SHARE
Program.”

The GMN team is seeking to
enlist other churches and organizations as partners to grow the SHARE
program. For example, they have
a partnership with Alzenia Hamlin
and others at her Senior Resident’s
Building and with Evelyn Wallace,
President of the Missionary Society.
The GMN SHARE Ministry is
also indebted to the office staff at
the church. Tabitha Washington
promotes the ministry to the church
membership through the Revelation Weekly News Letter. Vida
Lawson, and Alfonso Jones pro-
vide the SHARE ministry video announcements. Additionally, thanks
go to Vida Lawson for managing
the books. Audrey Hamilton, Patrick Lynch, Deidre Singleton, John
Simms, and Antwan Griffin help the
program by opening the doors of the
church on delivery days between
5:45 am - 6:00 am. Sandy Scott is
the team member who makes sure
the SHARE flyers are printed.

Behind the SHARE staff, helping
with this big and exciting move
is an army of supporters. The
amazing Catholic Charities team
found this new space, negotiated
the rent and terms of the lease, is
setting up all the needed phone,
IT, security, refrigeration, office
preperation, cleaning and moving.
The SHARE Advisory Council is
very engaged in helping the staff
communicate with you, our loyal
customers. Around the warehouse
you will see them sporting “Ask
Me About The Move” buttons,
armed with maps, information
and answers to any questions you
may have.
The SHARE staff has been cleaning, organizing, clearing, sorting,
and packing around the clock.
All of this moves SHARE into a
new and fresh chapter of service
to community. All of this is to
better serve you and your customers. All of this is to put even more
healthy, affordable food out into
