LEEDing the Way - Keith Panel Systems
LEEDing the Way Roxul products earn valuable LEED points ® ® New construction continues to grow and so does the need for more environmentally-conscious buildings. Roxul is prepared for that challenge. Roxul is part of the Rockwool group, a global leader in energy efficient building solutions. Our Stone Wool* insulation products help builders, architects, and owners build greener structures and earn valuable LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) points toward sustainable development. The Canadian Green Building Council (CaGBC) administers the LEED Green Building Rating System in Canada, which is a voluntary program to recognize and distinguish those builders striving to achieve projects with a lighter environmental footprint and positive impact on their communities. With prerequisites and credits, LEED points are earned throughout the construction process in six categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, and Innovation and Design Process. When enough points are accumulated, projects may achieve one of four different designations: Certified, Silver, Gold, or Platinum. And every point counts! Bankers Court Case Study Project Name: Bankers Court Project Size: 15 Storey, 268,525 Sq Ft. Location: Calgary, Alberta Building Use: Office Space & Retail Project Architect: Cohos Evamy Partners Developer: Brookfield Properties Corporation Construction Management: Ellis Don Roxul Product Used: Application Details: CurtainWall Manufacturer: Reasons for Roxul Use: Project Completion: 5” CurtainRock® 80 Unitized Curtain Wall Antamex International Inc. Thermal and Non-combustibility August 2008 LEED Certification Level Achieved: Gold Roxul’s CurtainRock is a board insulation specifically designed for use in curtain wall applications. The product can be produced with foil facings or used as a component of UL approved or backpan systems. Antamex International Inc. chose CurtainRock® because it would contribute to valuable LEED® points in the Bankers Court project due to its natural and highly recycled content of basalt rock and steel slag, energy-saving thermal properties, fire resistance, and local distribution to the job site from nearby British Columbia. Bankers Court showcases premium office space adjacent to Bankers Hall, which houses offices, retail space, a large auditorium, and health facilities. Together, these properties have 2.7 million sq ft of premium space in the heart of downtown Calgary. *Roxul insulation, along with other insulation materials such as fiberglass, is classified as mineral wool. However, the unique formulation of Roxul insulation delivers benefits that set it apart from traditional mineral wools. These benefits are only available in Stone Wool products. LEED Points Summary Take a look and see how Roxul products can boost your new construction project’s LEED points total – up to 22 additional points could be earned!** LEED Category & Credits Roxul Contribution Possible Points Energy & Atmosphere EA Credit 1: Our rock and slag mineral wool has higher R-values for superior thermal properties and energy efficiency. Overall contribution depends upon R-value used. Points depend upon on design energy costs compared to the energy of the MNECB or ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-1999. Materials & Resources MR Credit 2.1: Roxul products are dimensionally stable and sag resistant. When removed undamaged, our products may be reused and recycled for other projects. Roxul products are size optimized for fit, enhancing performance and limiting construction waste. Optimize Energy Performance (in addition to the prerequisite standard for reducing excessive energy use) Construction Waste Management Divert 50% from Disposal Construction Waste Management Divert 75% from Disposal MR Credit 4.2: Recycled Content 15% 1 Point Plus 1 Point MR Credit 2.2: MR Credit 4.1: Recycled Content 7.5% Up to 10 – points depending upon energy saved (in addition to MR Credit 2.1) Roxul mineral wool consists of basalt rock and recycled steel slag. Our recycled content is at minimum 40%. 1 Point for 7.5% Plus 1 Point for 15% (in addition to MR Credit 4.1) MR Credit 5.1: Regional Materials: 10% Extracted, Processed & Manufactured Regionally (use 10% of materials that have at least 80% of the product extracted, processed, and manufactured within 800 km (by road) of the project site, OR 2400 km (shipped by rail or water), OR a combination of the above with 5% shipped by road and 5% shipped by rail/water.) Roxul has two strategically located plants – one in Ontario and another in British Columbia – both are near highly populated areas and in close proximity to major transportation routes. Project site distances would have to be calculated for eligible Points. MR Credit 5.2: Plus 1 more point for 20% Regional Materials: 20% Extracted, Processed & Manufactured Regionally (same as in MR Credit 5.1) Indoor Environmental Quality EQ Credit 3.2: Roxul meets – or is significantly below – the maximum concentration criteria of IAQ pollutants set out by LEED. By minimizing the indoor air quality pollutant potential, the comfort and well-being of the construction workers and building occupants are enhanced. EQ Credit 7.1: Thermal Comfort Design Roxul products offer a higher R-value. This minimizes thermal cycling due to external conditions, contributing to a more comfortable thermal environment. Innovation & Design Process ID Credit 1 to 1.4 Roxul products provide superior thermal, acoustical, and fire performance.
