First Sunday of Advent
“Welcome the Lord”
The Liturgical season of Advent draws our hearts toward the celebration of that point in human history
2,000 years ago, when Jesus came; toward Jesus’
coming to us every day of our lives; and toward Jesus’ final coming in glory.
Jesus is fully present in our human experience of time—in the past, in the present, and in the future. During this season of Advent, as today’s Gospel says,
we focus on becoming “vigilant at all times” so that we are prepared to “stand
before the Son of Man” whenever that time may come.
(Taken from ‘Catechist’ Magazine)
The information will be printed in
the December 6th bulletin.
Active Waiting
Family Liturgy
Please join us!
Sunday, December 6th
At 9:00 a.m.
As this new liturgical year unfolds, today’s readings are most appropriate, for
they root us in what it means to live authentically as Christians. The Gospel, with
its frightening predictions of the end times, invites the hearer to “be vigilant at all
times” (Luke 21:36). This kind of vigilance is not at all passive for the Christian.
Instead, it is a kind of active waiting. And what should we be doing while we are
waiting for the coming of the Lord? The second reading gives us the answer:
“abound in love for one another and for all” (1 Thessalonians 3:12). Today is all
about promises made and fulfilled. May this Advent season root us all firmly in a
stance of active waiting for the Lord, who brings justice and peace.

St. John of Damascus (c. 675-749)
December 4
From almost 1300 years ago, John’s message for the church’s spirituality and
mission is surprisingly contemporary. Pope Benedict says that, in our modern culture of images, sacred images often speak more eloquently than words. This
“incarnational theology,” the concept that visible, tangible elements can give believers access to divine realities beyond, found an eloquent champion in John of
Damascus. He challenged the Iconoclasts (image-breakers), whose misinterpretation
of the biblical prohibition of idolatrous images (Exodus 20:4-5) led them to campaign for the destruction of all sacred art. Before this controversy, however, John
bore witness to Christ in a way that provides a timely example for Christians in
today’s pluralistic society. Succeeding his grandfather and father, John served as
chief financial officer to the Muslim Caliph, professing his Christian faith without
compromise, while winning the esteem of his Islamic sovereign by his competence
and integrity. No wonder John could eloquently defend icons as “windows into
heaven”—he had already learned to see Christ in the living icons of people different from himself yet fashioned in the same divine image!

There are two hundred residents at the nursing home so some of our middle
school students will make two gift boxes. These boxes will contain a craft item
that the students will make, a pair of socks that they will purchase, and other donated items that the residents enjoy. This is where we are asking for help from the
parishioners.
If any of you have things that you can donate for these gift boxes, we would be
most grateful. Items that we can use would be:
• any individually wrapped candy
• small stuffed animals like Beanie Babies toiletries such as tooth paste, lotions,
etc.
• individually wrapped packs of cookies or snacks anything that you think the
elderly would enjoy receiving in a gift box from the sixth, seventh, and eighth
grade students
If you are able to help us, please either send your donation to school with one of
our students, drop it off at school, or give it to Miss Francisco by Friday, December 4th and she will make sure that I receive it.
Thank you so much for your help.
