@yewstockschool www.yewstock.dorset.sch.uk YEWSTOCK SCHOOL NEWS YEWSTOCK COLLEGE May 2016 facebook.com/yewstockschool Diary Dates this term Dear Parents/Carers I cannot believe that half term is here already, Easter does not seem that long ago or perhaps it’s just that so much has happened since then. OPEN MORNING— May 4th Once again the pupils excelled themselves. The enthusiasm and pride that they showed both in their school and their work shone through. “An inspirational school. Truly uplifting!”, “The school and college both gave a wonderful impression, with enthusiastic teachers and delightful pupils. We had excellent guides and really appreciate the welcome we were given. Thank you so much” are just a couple of quotes received on the day. We were very honoured to have the new High Sheriff of Dorset—Sir Philip Williams Bt, DL, visit with his wife Catherine. JUNE 6th 6th-10th 8th 10th 11th 13th 16th 23rd 24th 24th Students return Post 16 to Freshwater Primary visit to Longleat Queen’s Birthday Afternoon Tea Car Boot Sale Class 5 to Moors Valley Music for Autism Concert 3KV to Bovington Tank Museum Leavers Assembly 6.30-9pm Senior Prom Olympic Parade Sir Philip called Yewstock “an 28th excellent and marvellous institution … with a manifestly motivated and devoted staff” going on to say that “it is the people not the buildings or facilities on which the success and happiness of a school depends… The pupils also gave a good account of themselves—polite, anxious to please and clearly welcoming to a group of strangers invading their school.” We are so proud of our pupils and it is wonderful to know that each and every one of them can be relied upon to be ambassadors for our school. AVON TYRELL RESIDENTIAL What a week we had! The weather was kind, the pool was glorious—especially when it rained one day. We were swimming in the warm water, mist rising from the pool, and rain falling, creating little splashes on the surface. What could be better? Jack learnt to swim with a float, Aiden conquered his fears and rowed our canoe, Tommy discovered his love of biking and Michael became an expert, Jordan walked non-stop, Charbonnay smiled, Megan leapt gazelle-like up the trees and climbing wall, Shannon and Mary were the terrific twins, Matthew recognised the night jar song during our evening walks, Elliot the Eagle swooped on the trapeze 20ft up in the canopy! Daniel ate every meal except one but had plenty of money for tuck shop, Curtis was up for everything, Ethan capsized in his kayak and got back in and carried on! Roll on next year.—Mrs Knotwell LEESON HOUSE RESIDENTIAL Class Five also went on their annual residential visit to Leeson House. They had an absolutely marvellous time visiting Brownsea Island. Ben said that “the ferry was fun but rocky and we saw the Condor”. Demus liked the Visitor Centre because it had nice classrooms there and pictures of red squirrels. They took the chain ferry over to Studland and from there went to Leeson House. They had a sandcastle competition that evening with everyone really enjoying themselves, Violet and Tyler especially enjoyed this and eating pizza afterwards. The next day they spent learning about smugglers from Pirate Ben who looked remarkably like Jack Sparrow! It was a very tired Class 5 that arrived back on Friday afternoon. Post 16 are now looking forward to their annual Residential at Freshwater. E-SAFETY AT YEWSTOCK Please take moment to look at the new e-safety tab on our school website. It has lots of useful links and information which will help you and your children to stay safe online. As the summer holidays are approaching you might be concerned about who you can contact should there be an online issue with your child. The school webpage has contacts as well as a link to CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection) who are the official body for reporting incidents of online abuse. This is for serious incidents only but if you are unsure please read the following from their website: When should I report to CEOP? We help children stay safe online. Has someone acted inappropriately towards you online, or to a child or young person you know? It may be sexual chat, being asked to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable or someone being insistent on meeting up. You can report it to us. Yewstock has the CEOP button on the e-safety web page which takes you directly to the CEOP website. Mr Morris.
