Saint Bonaventure Catholic Parish Mission Statement: As Christian stewards, our mission is to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all people through word, sacrament, service, and community life. 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 31, 2011 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page two PASTOR’S CORNER Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In today’s Gospel from Matthew 14:13-21, Jesus hears that John the Baptist has been executed and wants to spend some time in solitude. But people keep coming to him. Instead of being upset, he shows pity for them and cures those who are sick. When his disciples tell him to dismiss the crowd from “this deserted place … so they can buy food for themselves,” Jesus tells them to give the crowd some food. The disciples say they only have five loaves and two fish, not enough for five thousand men and their families. Jesus takes the five loaves and two fish, blesses and breaks them, and has the disciples distribute them to the crowd. Not only is there enough for everyone, the disciples are also able to fill twelve baskets with leftovers. When we tell Jesus to help someone in need, don’t be surprised that you hear back, “give them something yourself.” You tell the Lord, “I have so little to give.” And he says back, “Bring them here to me.” Jesus will bless the little you have to give and make it abundant: the words of encouragement you give to a friend who is sick, the time you spend tutoring a struggling student, the service you give to the poor. There are the few people (five loaves plus two fish) in this parish doing a lot of good service. I ask the Lord to bless and break open many more people to be of service to our parish and community. HUMANAE VITAE Forty-three years ago on July 25, 1968, Pope Paul VI wrote his encyclical letter HUMANAE VITAE to address the Church’s position on regulation of birth. The following are some excerpts from this encyclical. Numbers in parentheses refer to the notes at the end of the encyclical that you can view on line. If you google Humanae Vitae and click on the first entry it will take you to the Vatican website. —Fr. Joe II. DOCTRINAL PRINCIPLES 7. The question of human procreation, like every other question which touches human life, involves more than the limited aspects specific to such disciplines as biology, psychology, demography or sociology. It is the whole man and the whole mission to which he is called that must be considered: both its natural, earthly aspects and its supernatural, eternal aspects. And since in the attempt to justify artificial methods of birth control many appeal to the demands of married love or of responsible parenthood, these two important realities of married life must be accurately defined and analyzed. This is what We mean to do, with special reference to what the Second Vatican Council taught with the highest authority in its Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the World of Today. God’s Loving Design 8. Married love particularly reveals its true nature and nobility when we realize that it takes its origin from God, who “is love,” (6) the Father “from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.” (7) July 31, 2011 Marriage, then, is far from being the effect of chance or the result of the blind evolution of natural forces. It is in reality the wise and provident institution of God the Creator, whose purpose was to effect in man His loving design. As a consequence, husband and wife, through that mutual gift of themselves, which is specific and exclusive to them alone, develop that union of two persons in which they perfect one another, cooperating with God in the generation and rearing of new lives. The marriage of those who have been baptized is, in addition, invested with the dignity of a sacramental sign of grace, for it represents the union of Christ and His Church. Married Love 9. In the light of these facts the characteristic features and exigencies of married love are clearly indicated, and it is of the highest importance to evaluate them exactly. This love is above all fully human, a compound of sense and spirit. It is not, then, merely a question of natural instinct or emotional drive. It is also, and above all, an act of the free will, whose trust is such that it is meant not only to survive the joys and sorrows of daily life, but also to grow, so that husband and wife become in a way Page three one heart and one soul, and together attain their human fulfillment. It is a love which is total — that very special form of personal friendship in which husband and wife generously share everything, allowing no unreasonable exceptions and not thinking solely of their own convenience. Whoever really loves his partner loves not only for what he receives, but loves that partner for the partner’s own sake, content to be able to enrich the other with the gift of himself. Married love is also faithful and exclusive of all other, and this until death. This is how husband and wife understood it on the day on which, fully aware of what they were doing, they freely vowed themselves to one another in marriage. Though this fidelity of husband and wife sometimes presents difficulties, no one has the right to assert that it is impossible; it is, on the contrary, always honorable and meritorious. The example of countless married couples proves not only that fidelity is in accord with the nature of marriage, but also that it is the source of profound and enduring happiness. Finally, this love is fecund. It is not confined wholly to the loving interchange of husband and wife; it also contrives to go beyond this to bring new life into being. “Marriage and conjugal love are by their nature ordained toward the procreation and education of children. Children are really the supreme gift of marriage and contribute in the highest degree to their parents’ welfare.” (8) Page four July 31, 2011 HOPE OFFICE “Christmas in July” food drive Even with the economy starting to show improvement, there continues to be an incredible need within our community to assist those less fortunate. In 2010, HOPE assisted 18,900 individuals, up another 10% from 2009. As you have heard through the media, low inventories are still being seen at our local Food Banks where HOPE purchases food for distribution. In order to continue assisting those in need, baskets normally used to collect holiday food donations will be placed at the doors of the church. As you do your weekly grocery shopping, we are asking that you please purchase non-perishable food items. Some suggestions include tuna, soups, meal-in-a-can, canned fruit, canned vegetables, cereal, rice, and macaroni and cheese. Thank you for your support! God bless you. THE EUCHARIST: Source and Summit of Christian Faith New Unit Begins August 3 “The Seven Secrets of the Eucharist” The Eucharistic Education and Adoration Ministry is again offering a 12-week program on the Eucharist. Individuals or groups who would like to be added to the adoration schedule may sign up in the adoration book in the vestibule of the church or by calling Araceli Martinez, 376-0150. After sundown all church doors will be locked except the two front doors on the tabernacle and font sides. Your gift of one hour day or night will bring many blessings. July 31, 2011 CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER MINISTRY August 9, 7:00 p.m. in the hall conference room August 16, 7:00 p.m. in Duffy East Not everyone can or should live as a hermit, but no Christian can do without an inner hermitage where God can be encountered. The hermitage is a place apart, a desert where a person comes faceto-face with his true self, and in that meeting discovers God. It is a place of silence, of fear and fascination, of anguish and grace. Come and join us to contemplate the Scriptures through the practice of Lectio Divina. We meet every Tuesday (except the First Tuesday) from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at designated venues (see bulletin). Let the desire to be with God goad you as often and intensely as it may. The trail you are following has no end except in God. Be generous. The Master himself will draw near to serve you. For more info call Thess Williams at 928-3385. CHRIST RENEWS HIS PARISH Men‛s Renewal Weekend, August 13-14 Women‛s Renewal Weekend, September 17-18 Christ Renews His Parish is a spiritual renewal experience which brings adult parishioners together in small groups in order to deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ and each other. During the retreat weekend each attendee will hear from fellow parishioners who will share their faith stories. There is group discussion and response, opportunities for scripture sharing, reconciliation and Eucharist. Please pick up a registration form in the parish center, fill it out and return to the parish center. Or to learn more about the weekend and to register online, please access our link on the St. Bonaventure website. For more info about the Men’s Retreat, please call Michael Dwyer, 655-3672. RESPECT LIFE To Live Each Day with Dignity "To Live Each Day with Dignity" is the title of a new statement made by U.S. Bishops on the Euthanasia Movement. It can be found online at www. usccb.org/toliveeachday. Euthanasia advocates are exploiting our fears about death says Archbishop Jose H. Gomez in a recent article in The Tidings. With our population getting older, we are already seeing economic pressures to ration health care among the elderly and the terminally ill. Euthanasia advocates want to assuage our fears by killing those who are afraid, he observes. And if they succeed in their efforts to legalize physician-assisted suicide, the government would make the decisions about which lives are worthy of living and which are better off dead. We must tell our society that our lives are not only biological but theological, Gomez writes. Let us ask Our Blessed Virgin Mary to help us create a society of love and true mercy where everyone lives each day with dignity. Meanwhile, take time to ponder the statement of the U.S. Bishops. Your life may depend on it. FAMILIES OF NAZARETH We Receive More Than Enough “God’s mercy unceasingly stoops down to us and constantly cares for us. We always receive more than enough. We lack nothing, and we will never lack whatever is indispensable for us to be more and more united with the Only Love.” —S.C. Biela, The Two Pillars, p. 88 • Families of Nazareth Movement: Communion of life with Christ through Mary. Small faith-sharing groups open to anyone seeking a deeper relationship with the Loving Presence of Jesus. Call Mary Jane Bartee, 846-8434. For more info call Don at 458-8501. Page six July 31, 2011 QUESTION AND ANSWER Q: What is the meaning of “sensus fidelium”? A: “Sensus fidelium literally means ‘the sense of the faithful.’ It is sometimes stated as consensus fidelium (‘consent of the faithful’) and sensus fidei (‘the sense of faith’). It is a reminder that the Holy Spirit is present and active in the whole Church, not only in the hierarchy. The whole Church is the Temple of the Holy Spirit, anointed and animated by the Spirit (1 John 2:27). Therefore, the faith of the People of God is an important criterion of orthodoxy. In other words, the whole Church (including the laity) is a teaching Church, and the whole Church (including the hierarchy) is a learning Church. The concept of sensus fidelium is found, at least implicitly, in the early Fathers of the Church who insisted that the Church teaching can never contradict the universal and corporate faith of the Church. A fifth-century monk, St. Vincent of Lerins, is most often identified with this view. Tradition, he wrote, is ‘what has been believed everywhere, always, and by all’ (quod ubique, quod semper, quod ab omnibus). He was also careful to point out, however, that tradition is subject to growth and interpretation. In modern times Cardinal John Henry Newman elaborated upon this teaching in his essay On Consulting the Faithful in Matters of Doctrine, and the French Dominican theologian Yves Congar developed it even further in his Lay People in the Church, just prior to Vatican II. Vatican II itself affirmed this teaching: ‘The body of the faithful as a whole, anointed as they are by the Holy One, cannot err in matters of belief’ (Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, number 12). This quality is manifest when the whole Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, ‘shows universal agreement in matters of faith and morals.’ While this does not mean that every common belief of the faithful is true, it does mean that the experience of the faithful is a source for theology and for doctrine, and that the faithful should, therefore, be consulted in the formulation of Church teaching. Obviously, it isn’t an easy matter to determine the sensus fidelium. The task of determining sensus fidelium is an inexact science, subject to widely varying interpretations affected by the differences of the various countries, regions and cultures.” —Taken from Q and A – The Church by Rev. Richard P. McBrien, Paulist Press, New Jersey • If you have questions about the Church call the Adult Education Office for research and an answer, 8463359x478. The event was held on June 20 at Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach and raised close to $75,000. We had 127 golfers who teed off at 10:00 a.m. and enjoyed food and drink all day long. The afternoon continued with a silent auction then dinner and live auction with 220 people present. Fr. Joe and Fr. Angelos were both in attendance. The event was a great way for parents, friends, family and staff to kick off their summer holiday. A special thank you to Mrs. Mary MacKinnon and Mrs. Jeannie Wilson who were on the golf committee throughout the planning stages and worked the event. Parking was a breeze with our parking expert, Mr. David Floyd. Miss Meaghan Carey was the leader of our wonderful volunteers. Our expert recorders for the live auction were Mrs. Grant and Ms. Harkin. Mọi người đều ăn no... Sao Lại Hoài Nghi !.. ... EFT is a way of giving your Sunday offerings and other donations to St. Bonaventure Church through automatic deductions from your checking or savings account. How does it benefit me or the Church? Giving by EFT frees you from writing Sunday offering and other checks. EFT offers parishioners an easy, systematic means of supporting the ministries of the Church while reducing the risk of checks being lost or misplaced. How secure is EFT giving? It is very secure. No personal information is asked for on the authorization form, and our EFT processing company, VANCO Services, will not have access to such things as account balances and other personal information maintained by your bank, credit union or other financial institutions. Hence, no identity theft is possible. How much will it cost me? This service is free to you. What happens if I change bank accounts? A new authorization form will be given to you to fill out. How about if I want to change the amount of my offering? Again, you will simply complete a new authorization form. Can I change, cancel or stop contributions at any time? Yes. If you want to discontinue your electronic giving, inform the parish center and we’ll take it from there. If I have more questions on EFT, whom should I contact? Nancy Cesar, our parish business manager. Her phone number is 846-2447.
