Welcome!
Saint Mary–Saint Catherine of
Siena is an urban, Roman
Catholic Parish formed in 2006 from two
historic Charlestown parishes. We are an
intentionally inclusive community welcoming all of the many people who make up
our diverse neighborhood. Because our
lives are nourished by the Eucharist, we
strive to build a vibrant Parish that develops and strengthens our faith and worship.
With a goal of being community-oriented
in the Spirit of the Gospel, we are involved
in the local and global issues of our times.
We are therefore dedicated to service, action, and compassion.

In an Instant
All of us have seen or heard of this
example: a child wants something seen
at the store and insists a parent purchase it – say a candy bar. The parent
patiently explains that it is close to dinner and there will be no candy before
supper. After the child sulks and
whines, the parent offers to purchase
the candy, but the child cannot have it
until after supper. The child’s anger and
insistence on being given the candy bar
– right now - is on display for everyone
to see in the check-out line at the supermarket!
tion, on the other hand, is all about having that “good thing” right now!
Is it just me or do we seem to have
slipped into a culture where instant
gratification is now becoming the only
norm? Why does everything have to be
faster? Who has placed this high value
of everything happening in an instant?
Who or what is pushing this illusory
truth? And at what cost do we have
“faster and instant”?
One of the dangers of this immediate
gratification mentality is that we can
find ourselves dismissing as of li@le value or reducing to irrelevant achievements, knowledge, institutions and people who do not conform to the philosophy of the immediate. If something cannot be summed up in a sound bite, it is
boring or insignificant. If persons cannot satisfy our “perceived” need in the
twinkling of an eye, then they become
disposable.
A recent television commercial
promises that if you act NOW, this new
carpet will be delivered to your home
tomorrow. Another promises a new flat
screen T V can be had with super speed.
And yet another indicates that with just
one click of the mouse, one can have
much faster internet service and instant
access to …. The whole culture of
“instant” and “faster access” to whatever seems to be spreading to everythingLet’s stop and take some time to reand I wonder what it means. And are

culture might say otherwise – is an infinite, mysterious, overwhelming and wonderful experience that takes work and grows over time – never instant. Infatuation, yes, that is instantaneous; love is another ma@er.
And so, let us give ourselves permission to yearn for and look forward to. Let
us savor whatever is before us instead of looking for the next “thing” coming
down the pike. Let us take time to value the people we love, the experiences we
cherish, the accomplishments we have labored to achieve. Let us give ourselves
the gift to stop, reflect, assess, and take account of what is truly important in our
lives instead of ge@ing high on the newest fastest whatever. Let us responsibly
discern that which truly requires immediacy and that which is at risk if we do not
give it the time and a@ention it truly requires and deserves.
Children do not have the ability to delay gratification on their own. They need
the adults in their lives to teach them how to make good choices and how to
soothe themselves when they can’t immediately get their own way or when they
have to forego something because it is not good for them. As adults, we need to
do this for ourselves. We need to do it…for the sake of our children…for the sake
of our world.
Fr. Ronan
What is Rite of Christian Initiation?
Have you been worshiping with us, but never officially took the step to
become Catholic?
Have you been away from the church and have now returned, but want to
know more?
Have you been a Catholic all your life, but never celebrated all the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist?)
Have you joined us from a different background and would now like to find out more about
the Catholic Church?
If any of the above questions apply to you, we would love to help you in your journey. Or,
if you know of anyone who could answer YES to any of the above questions, perhaps you
could extend an invitation to them!
In recent years, there has been a great increase in the number of adults who are joining
the Catholic Church. RCIA is a program designed to help non-Catholics and nonpracticing Catholics learn more about the Catholic faith through a series of classes,
discussions, prayer times and ceremonies. This program helps people grow in faith and
knowledge of God, and develop a deeper relationship with God as they consider
becoming Catholic.
If you are not yet sure whether you want to become Catholic, you are still welcome to
participate as you make your decision. There is no obligation to join the Catholic Church
and regardless of your decision you are always welcome here at St. Mary-St. Catherine of
Siena Parish.
Elisa Corra, Shirley Foley, Fr. Ronan and Sr. Nancy (Members of the RCIA Team)
To find out how you may participate in the RCIA process, please contact Sr. Nancy Citro,
SNDdeN at (617) 242-4664 or [email protected]. We look forward to welcoming you!

Seeking Allergy Relief
A change in season can brighten your days with vibrant colors, but blooming flowers and falling leaves can bring in more than beautiful scenery. Airborne substances that irritate your nose can blow in with the weather. When sneezing, itchy eyes,
or a runny nose suddenly appears, allergies may be to blame.
Allergies arise when the body’s immune system overreacts to substances, called
allergens, that are normally harmless. Allergies run in families. When a person
with allergies breathes in allergens, such as pollen, mold, or pet dander, the resulting allergic reactions in the nose are called allergic rhinitis, or hay fever.
Allergy is one of the most common long-term health conditions. Over the past several decades, the prevalence of allergies has been increasing, according to allergy experts at the National Institute of Health. Currently,
airborne allergies affect approximately 10-30% of adults.
Avoiding allergy triggers is the best way to control symptoms, but triggers aren’t always easy to identify. Notice when and where your
symptoms occur. This can help you figure out the cause. Most people with allergies are sensitive to more than one allergen. Grass,
weed, and tree pollens are the most common causes of outdoor allergies. Pollen is often the source if your symptoms are seasonal. Indoor allergens usually trigger symptoms that last all year.
If your symptoms become persistent and bothersome, visit your physician or an allergist. They can test for allergy sensitivities by using
a skin or blood test. The test results, along with a medical exam and information about when and where your symptoms occur, will
help your doctor determine the cause.
Even when you know your triggers, avoiding allergens can be difficult. When pollen counts are high, stay inside with the windows
closed and use the air conditioning. Avoid bringing pollen indoors. If you spend time outside, wash your hair and clothing before you
retire for the evening. Pets can also bring in pollen, so clean them too.
For indoor allergens, keep humidity levels low in the home to keep dust mites and mold under control. A hygrometer, used to measure
humidity, is inexpensive and can be purchased at any hardware store. Avoid upholstered furniture and carpets because they harbor
allergens. Wash your bedding in hot water, and vacuum the floors once a week.
Sometimes, avoiding allergens isn’t possible or isn’t enough. Untreated allergies are associated with chronic conditions like sinus infections and asthma. Over-the-counter antihistamines, such as Zyrtec, nasal sprays, such as Flonase, and decongestants containing
pseudophedrine, such as Sudafed, can ease mild symptoms. Most pharmacies carry brand name products of these medications which
are less expensive and work just as well. Prescription medications and allergy shots are sometimes needed for severe allergies.
Always talk with your doctor before taking any over the counter medications, and about other treatment options if
these over the counter medications don’t work or you cannot take them due to conflict with your other medications.
Ask your pharmacist to help you clarify this.
Allergy relief can help clear up more than just itchy, watery eyes. It can allow you to breathe easy again and brighten your outlook on
seasonal changes.

Bl. Emmanuel Ruiz
Not much is known of the early life of Emmanuel Ruiz, but details of his heroic death in defense of the faith have come down
to us.
Born of humble parents in Santander, Spain, he became a Franciscan priest and served as a missionary in Damascus. This
was at a time when anti-Christian riots shook Syria and thousands lost their lives in just a short time.
Among these were Emmanuel, superior of the Franciscan convent, seven other friars and three laymen. When a menacing
crowd came looking for the men, they refused to renounce their faith and become Muslims. The men were subjected to horrible tortures before their martyrdom.
Emmanuel, his brother Franciscans and the three Maronite laymen were beatified in 1926 by Pope Pius XI.

JESUCRISTO, ALIVIO Y DESCANSO NUESTRO
fiestas, licores, drogas, diversiones, grupos cristianos ofreciendo milagros tipo
misericordia?
¡Qué desafío tan grande tenemos los cristianos! Ofrecer a Cristo, alivio y descanso real, a tantos fatigados y agobiados.
a Jesucristo:
“Te doy gracias Padre… porque has revelado estas cosas a la gente sencilla” (Mt 11). La humildad es la virtud que nos permite descubrir la verdad, somos pobres e incapaces de salvarnos a nosotros mismos, por lo tanto, escuchamos con mucha atención a
Dios.
“Vengan a mi…” (Mt 11).

July 10 ~ Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Timeless words from Moses: "… heed the
voice of the LORD, your God, and keep his
commandments and statutes …,” Moses reminds us that the commandments are readily
accessible. In fact, they are “already in your
mouths and in your hearts; you have only to
carry it out." Love God, love your neighbor.
Jesus tells the beautiful story of the Good Samaritan – a story with such a universal message it is the common understanding of kindness. It is a story of mercy. The Year of Mercy is more
than half over. What spiritual or corporal works of mercy have you built
into your daily life? It’s not too late to start.
