When performance becomes a disease
Never before has the employment market offered as many opportunities and chances as it
does today – but also as many risks. Thanks to
modern technology, fewer and fewer people
can or have to produce more and more. The
burden on each individual increases – too

The WorldSkills trade world championships being held in Calgary, Canada in September 2009 offer unique
opportunities for the exchange of experiences and observations regarding
competency standards in industry,
trades and services for the global
economy. In addition to professional
competition, two “by-products” have
a sustained effect: The transfer of
specialised knowledge at the expert
level and the effect of peak performance on the breadth of vocational
training. Even though it “only” deals
with peak work performance, this
event deserves our attention along
with the young tradespeople who
are giving it their all!
Comparison of vocational training
systems
Our dual vocational training system is on the test
stand in international comparisons. It must be in
good shape since the top rankings of past years – including best European nation in Japan 2007 – confirm the fitness of Swiss vocational training in one of
the few truly informative comparisons in the world!
Gold medals for countries like Korea and Japan
along with top rankings for emerging nations such
as Brazil indicate that different roads can lead to
Rome. Vocational training needs transparency in
terms of education and practical experience. In addition to basic vocational training, higher education
programmes also need to be available. This is where
vocational baccalaureates and universities of applied
sciences have opened doors. The apprenticeship for
life is dead – long live vocational training as a platform for outstanding job performance or a springboard for subsequent adventures in education!
