As dedicated animal lovers, you may be aware of the court rulings and proposed legislation regarding “Pit Bulls.” Last August,
the Baltimore Sun reported, “the Maryland Court of Appeals ruled
that purebred pit bulls are ‘inherently dangerous’ and that landlords
could potentially be strictly liable if a pit bull attacks a person on
their property.” The court and media overlooked two basic flaws
inherent to all three referenced cases—1) the dogs were roaming
or loose and 2) there was no questioning as to the lack of training
of these Pit Bulls. To confuse the issue further, it is difficult to
identify what a Pit Bull looks like. (Please see the Pit Bull poster

If you believe you
can—or believe you
can’t—you’re right. If
you believe you can’t,
you’ll be hard pressed to
clear your mind enough
to experience the communication. If you believe you can, a whole
new world will be open
to you.
Animal communication is a telepathic process—sending thoughts
and feelings over distance. The capacity for telepathy is encoded
in our DNA. It’s the way we communicated
when we were cave people. We had to have
had something more than a few grunts and
hand signals to have survived and evolved
into who we are today. Once we developed
the ability to speak, we unconsciously put
telepathy on the back
burner. It must have
seemed a much lesser
form of communication.
Each of us is able to
re-open those channels.

and lots of practice,

animals.
Animals communicate primarily through
feelings, images and
thoughts. It is quick and
often subtle. They have
no need to belabor conversation. They are
very practiced at knowing what we think
and feel, and they think we waste a lot of
time talking in words.

days. They follow
close behind, always curious what
their friend is up
to next. They get
jealous very easily,
and can feel replaced by inanimate objects like laptops
and TV remotes. They never take anything

R ainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place
called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close
to someone here, that pet goes to the
Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows
and hills for all our special friends so
they can run and play together. There
is plenty of food, water and sunshine,
and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been
ill and old are restored to health and
vigor; those who are hurt or maimed
are made whole and strong again, just
as we remember them in our dreams
of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content,
except for one small thing: they miss
someone very special, someone who
was left behind. They all run and play
together, but the day comes when suddenly one stops and looks into the
distance. His bright eyes are intent; his
eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly
he breaks from the group, flying over
the green grass, faster and faster.
You have been spotted and when
you and your special friend finally
meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The
happy kisses rain upon your face; your
hands again caress the beloved head,
and you look once more in those
trusting eyes, so long from your life,
but never absent from your heart.

Dog Aggression
Aggression in dogs is a serious behavior
problem. Aggressive behavior is one of the
leading causes of euthanasia.
Aggression can often be prevented and is
most frequently defensive behavior. We often hear the expression “the best defense is
a good offense” and most dogs considered
aggressive are defending themselves, others or protecting
their resources.
Ensuring that
puppies are socialized properly
with adults, children and other
dogs during early
development will
help set the stage
for acceptable behavior as the dog
matures.
Puppies, from
three weeks of
age, when they
can see and hear,
until 14 weeks of
age should be introduced to 100 people,
places and other animals. This should include children, adults and non-family members. Most states require that a puppy be
at least 8 weeks of age before they can be
adopted or purchased. In the beginning
you should consider inviting people over
to hand feed your pup until he/she has
had the first in a series of vaccinations.
Have “puppy showers” to introduce your
puppy to friends until you can enroll in a
puppy k class.
At 8 weeks of age you can enroll your
puppy in a puppy k class. Be certain that
the class has plenty of safe “off leash” time
for socialization combined with positive
reinforcement training. Avoiding aversive
techniques will help guarantee only positive
experiences occur.
During this time until 18 weeks of age,
your puppy should learn bite inhibition.
Be certain to ask the instructor about the
techniques used and if/how bite inhibition
is taught.
When a dog is hurt or startled, his natural response is to
snap, lunge and
even bite. Even
extremely friendly dogs may feel
inclined to protect or defend
themselves when
picked on by other dogs and people. The reliability
of your dog’s bite
inhibition determines whether
you have a minor
problem or a serious problem.
As stated by
world-renowned veterinary behaviorist,
Dr. Ian Dunbar,”accidents happen.”
If the dog has a well-established “soft
mouth” it is unlikely that the teeth will
touch or even break the skin. If your dog
has not been taught bite inhibition, you may
have a serious injury.
These simple steps can help stop aggressive behavior before it even starts. If
you suspect that your puppy is exhibiting
aggressive/defensive behavior contact a
certified animal behavior consultant for
assessment and intervention immediately.

Choosing a boarding
kennel for your dog is
as important as choosing a hotel when you
go on vacation. Just
like you, your dog can
get stressed. Making
sure that your dog has
an enjoyable stay while
you are on vacation will help keep him/her
healthy and in good spirits.
When looking for a boarding kennel,
here are a few things to consider:
• How are the kennels maintained? Are
they clean?
• What do the pens look like? Is it a cage
or a run? Is there outside access?
• Is the staff understanding of your
dog’s needs? Are they knowledgeable?
• Is the kennel licensed?
• What is the daily routine with feeding,
etc?
• What vaccinations do they require?
• How will the kennel handle a medical
emergency?
• What type of temperature control is
available? Are the pens heated and/or
air-conditioned?
Finding a good kennel can be as simple
as asking a friend, co-worker, family member, or dog trainer for recommendations.
You can also check local resources such as

common reasons are family decisions based on children, where a new pet will
help bring enjoyment to

dog is usually dependent

What should you look for when commissioning a portrait of your pet? The artist
needs to capture your pet’s personality,
know what to look for,
and loves animals, has the
ability to see what makes
them unique and special;
that makes them standout
from all the others; something that only you, their
master/mistress loves and
can spot in a second.
Look for an artist who
will talk to you, wants to
understand your relationship with your pet, has
the patience and spends
time taking lots of photos and does sketches your pet. If you live
too far away or the pet has died, the artist should want information and ask for
lots of photos; preferably, taken in natural
light. It helps capture the coloring as close
to true as photography will allow. For a
good pet portrait artist,
it is important to learn
what is or was special
about your pet, so share
a few stories and special
moments that made you
laugh, cry, or both. Sharing those photos that are
important helps the artist
capture the personality of
your pet. In the end, the
best compliment is “Oh

long vacation or short weekend getaway, the question is

Hyperthyroidism?
Recent advances in veterinary medicine
have allowed our pets to enjoy long healthy
lives. However, as our pets live longer they
have increased risk for diseases that commonly effect geriatric patients, such as diabetes, kidney disease and hyperthyroidism.
Of these, feline hyperthyroidism is the
most easily addressed, as there are options
for both medical and dietary management
and a complete cure.
Feline hyperthyroidism is caused by a
small tumor, often benign, on the thyroid
gland. This tumor resists regulation of thyroid hormone levels by the brain, which
results in increased metabolism, blood flow,
and frequently secondary conditions such
as increased blood pressure and heart rate,
or heart murmurs. Often, affected cats eat
large amounts while continuing to lose
weight.
Fortunately, this condition has a cure
in the form of I-131. A small amount of
radioactive iodine is used to completely
remove the tumor, effectively resolving the
condition. Unlike formulated drugs, there
are no side effects and there is no need for
lifelong management once the tumor has
been destroyed.
Though there are many geriatric conditions that require extensive management
and resources, hyperthyroidism need not
be considered the fatal disease it once was.

Mobile veterinarians offer many services
that are similar if not better than a stationary clinic. Certain mobile veterinarians
drive trucks that are fully equipped with
things like a surgery suite, digital radiographs, blood machines and dental units.
Blood machines allow veterinarians to
get results quickly so diseases like diabetes
can be treated immediately. Veterinarians
can also pursue other diagnostics like radiographs if the bloodwork is normal.
On board surgical suites allow procedures like spay/neuter, mass removals and
laceration repairs to be done by a mobile
veterinarian as well. This is helpful in
emergencies like a foreign body or pyometra (infected uterus) that need immediate
treatment.
In-home euthanasia services eliminate
the stress of your pet going to the vet in
the final moments of their life and allow
the family to grieve in private. Some mobile
veterinarians offer additional services like
cremation.
Finally, mobile veterinarians help animals
by making their vet visit easy for them and
their owner. Many cats and dogs labeled
“fractious” at a stationary clinic may actually do much better in their home environment. Transportation is another major issue
faced by pet owners. By going to a pet’s
home, pets can get the medical care they
really need.
