Gravel Rush Campaign Newsletter
# 9
Maaaaaaate! I’m calling it; BEST GIBB………..EVER.
If you joined our dusty peloton for the first time this year you’d probably be
thinking; “Cool gig..….perfect weather, beautiful country, smooth event, awesome
camping, great company, brilliant night time entertainment……even barista
quality coffee.”
I wish every Gibb was such a slick
operation but the simple truth is, 2014
was a perfect storm event.
Ian Cocker’s acoustic performances on
Days One and Three were spellbinding
and even more remarkably, came on top
of a full day in the saddle as a Dualist for
team Natural Temptation Café. Brilliant.
The Nyarinyin dance performance at
Mount
Elizabeth
Station
by
the
Mowanjum Community was a new
feature that realised our cross-cultural
potential for visitors and residents of the
Kimberley alike. Way cool.
Big Tommy Power was a bloody triumph.
The nightly fines sessions delivered the
right safety message with satire and
comic genius. He and The Bears (AKA
The Hags) cajoled, ridiculed and bullied
$2500 from our captive dusty audience.
With every dollar going to RFDS, Lady
Justice was served and served well.
Biggest, biggest kudos to the Bloody
Heroic
Volunteers.
Ladies
and
gentlemen,
without
your
selfless
contributions The Gibb Challenge can’t
materialise past idle beer infused
mutterings. To those who joined us for
the first time – THANK YOU and please
consider joining us again.
To my dear friends that join our event
year after year and have shaped our
event’s culture, please accept my humble
thanks and praise. You’re freakin’
awesome! THANK YOU.

Bloody Heroic Cause
Kudos first and foremost to the teams smashing
their way through the leader board at Everyday
Heroes’ portal for The Gibb Challenge.
The tally is nudging an insane $450K but that’s not our final tally because there are
still campaigns finishing up outside of the on-line collection portal, including the
fines dispensed by Tommy Power and The Bears, auction money and outstanding
pledges still being collected. Fingers crossed, your Bloody Heroic fundraising
efforts will achieve $500,000 for RFDS. I don’t gotta tell you how cool that would
be!

SHOW……ME…….THE……MONEY!!!!!!!!!!
I wanna know how we did. I wanna know how you did. I wanna know how much
we collectively raised for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and I wanna know how
much you raised for your nominated charities.
Each rider committed to raise $1000 for the
Royal Flying Doctor Service but I suspect
many went above and beyond the call to
arms
–
uber
fanatic
fundraising
mercenaries!
Let me know how you went so I can crow
some more about how freakin’ amazing this
event is and the way we’re making lives
better.
Just as The Gibb Challenge ain’t a race; The Gibb Challenge ain’t just about the
money either. I know that some teams are well connected to corporate Australia. I
know other teams threw themselves tirelessly into sausage sizzles, car washes or
quiz nights. Every contribution, every effort, every dollar and every cent is valued
and celebrated. Congratulations on your effort and on behalf of each of our charity
partners – THANK YOU.
I personally don’t give a rat’s toss whether your
team raised $2,000 or $20,000 but I would like to
know what sort of collective effort we achieved and
the benefits and opportunities we’re creating to
others outside of this event.

life defining Kimberley adventure in support of RFDS.

I’d be an absolute arse if I didn’t recognise the bucket load of support offered by
individuals and organisations outside of the cadre of sponsorship. Every
contribution is appreciated, valued and goes a long way towards the incredible
success of our community event.
Kleenheat Gas House Broome again
graciously provided the bottled gas
used by our bloody heroic catering
mob to cook one culinary feast after
another.
The show bag offering is my favourite magazine,
favoured among all glossy pages, grabby headlines
and delicious content; Mountain Biking Australia.
It’s a quarterly publication that I devour from cover
to back page, revisit time and time again and then dutifully stack in the ‘man cave’
for quiet review. It’s the stuff of mostly appropriate lustful cycling desires.
What Now?
It’s fair to say the preparations for next year’s Gibb Challenge have already started.
(It never really stops) The newsletters will cease for the next few months but the
work will continue in the background at a furious pace; acquittals, debriefing,
asset recovery and next year’s sponsorship submissions. I’ll start with a fresh
slate as far as our Heroes Page goes but I’ll certainly be trying to secure our
valued corporate sponsors again for what has proven to be an immensely popular
and unique event. There will be a little of the; get your people to call my people
and we can do lunch. A chance for some schmoozing and discovering that
corporate Jezebel inside me.
I want to offer my heartfelt thanks again to the participants in this year’s event;
sponsors, riders, support personnel, venue hosts and those bloody heroic
volunteers. We’re in for another explosion of interest from teams keen to join us
next year and that would be cool; building our event towards an epic Kimberley
adventure that’s attracting international interest. The secret’s out!
The first available team places for the 2015 campaign will go to those teams with a
demonstrated blood lust for fund-raising. Additional places will be allocated by
ballot or some other approved electoral process employed by despotic South
Pacific military regimes……or the Broome Shire’s creative democratic approach
and simply pull a name out of a hat.
So, firm up a team, approach potential sponsors, get in some regular training or
tinker with the trailer and match the logistical preparations if not the superhuman
speed and endurance of the freaks.
Stay tuned for Registration details in the first
of the 2015 campaign newsletters Gravel
Rush due out in October, or maybe even
September if I’m feeling particularly gobby.

me……… And it’s good night from him.”
