Infocentro AlpTransit – the world’s longest railway tunnel.
Ancient history and futuristic technology meet at the construction site of the
AlpTransit project where the world’s longest railway tunnel through the Alps (57
km, 35 mi.) has been under construction since 1999. It will provide faster connections between northern and southern Europe. Visitors can learn more at the
Infocentro visitor center in Pollegio (Upper Ticino) through interactive multimedia.
Visitor center: free entry. Open year-round, Tuesdays to Saturdays
Guided visits to construction sites and to tunnels: upon reservation.

Day 1.
• Arrival in Ticino and visit of Lugano, Switzerland’s third largest financial center,
with its car-free city center, Mediterranean-style squares, arcades, historic
buildings, Piazza Riforma and the renowned shopping street Via Nassa (2-3 h).
• Boat cruise on Lake Lugano to discover Ticino’s traditional fishing villages:
Gandria and Morcote. Hop-off in Morcote and visit the romantic village and
its church (2-3 h). Or in Lugano take the Mt. Brè funicular for a breathtaking view
overlooking the region (2-3 h).
• Visit of Swissminiatur in Melide (1.5 h), and/or transfer to FoxTown in Mendrisio
for shopping (2-4 h).
Day 2.
• Transfer to the Verzasca Valley and visit of the Verzasca Dam. Then to Lavertezzo
with its picturesque bridge Ponte dei Salti and the crystal clear river with
spectacularly shaped rocks (3 h).
• Visit of Locarno, home of the Festival del film, the old town with the little handicrafts
shops, historical buildings and the Madonna del Sasso sanctuary (3 h).
• Lake cruise from Locarno to the Brissago Islands and visit of the botanical
gardens (3h) or, take the Cardada cable car to the top of Locarno for a stunning
view (2-3 h).
• Transfer to Ascona, stroll through the narrow streets to discover its ancient
townhouses, boutiques, restaurants and art galleries.
Day 3.
• Visit the quaint historic center of Bellinzona, capital of Ticino, and its medieval
UNESCO castles (2-3 h).
• Visit the village of Giornico with its rich Romanesque cultural heritage (it counts
seven churches!) for a traditional meal at a local grotto (3 h).
• In Rivera take the Mt. Tamaro cable car to the top. Visit the Santa Maria degli
Angeli chapel and enjoy the stunning view (3 h). Or, transfer to Airolo to the
Gotthard cheese dairy, visit the museum and make your own cheese (3-4 h).
