Happy Valentine’s Day!
Valentine’s Day was possibly named after St.
Valentine, a bishop who held secret marriage ceremonies in opposition to Claudius II, who had prohibited marriage for young men. Once the Roman
Empire hit a crisis and Claudius became Emperor,
he felt that married men were more emotional and were not good soldiers.
By the 15th century when romantic love within the royal courts was
celebrated, the day was associated with giving flowers, gifts, or confections
to one’s sweetheart. Handwritten notes of love are exchanged and now greeting cards are mass-produced to spread tidings of love. Symbols of Valentine’s Day include hearts, doves, and cupids.

Ask Phoebe
Dear Phoebe,
My best friend has been really sketchy lately. I feel that I can’t tell her anything,
because some stuff I tell her is getting out. I’m forced to be around her with school and
practices. Telling her would just be awkward. What do I do? I think I’m losing her.
Think I’m losing her
Dear Think I’m losing her,
Even though it may be awkward, you do need to talk to her and tell her how you
feel. Right now it may feel like you are losing her, but if you to talk it out and do stuff
together, you two could maybe become close again.
Dear Phoebe,
I read a lot, and get in trouble sometimes. Can you help?
Dancing Doberman
Dear Dancing Doberman,
You are probably getting in trouble for reading because more than likely you are
reading during class instead of working. If you are, maybe once you get done with your
assignments, your teacher will allow you to read.
(Submit your questions to Ask Phoebe in the box at the library at the circulation desk.)

Book Review of the Week: Jake and Lily
Jake and Lily are twins. Even though they seem pretty different, Jake is the calm
one and Lily has a temper. Lily is obsessed with trains and Jake collects cool rocks.
They feel exactly the same, almost like two halves of one person. When one of them
gets hurt, the other can feel it. They can communicate without words. And mysteriously,
every year on their birthday, they sleepwalk to a train station in the middle of the night.
But the year they turn eleven, everything changes. Their
parents announce it’s time for separate bedrooms, and Jake starts
hanging out with a pack of boys on the block. Lily is devastated,
not to mention really, really mad. As she struggles to make
friends and get a life apart from her twin, Jake finds himself
dealing with a neighborhood bully and has to decide what kind
of person he really is.

Mind Bender: Jigsaw Puzzles
Eighth grade students Joy Mills, Ashley Gifford,
Taylor Greaver, and Olivia Miller finish a jigsaw
puzzle in the school library.
Jigsaw puzzles help develop spatial thinking and many people think putting them together is a relaxing and fun activity.
The first jigsaw puzzle was created in
1767 by an English mapmaker named John
Spilsbury. He glued a map of the world to a
piece of wood and cut out each country. Teachers used Spilsbury’s puzzles to teach geography
to students.
Puzzles are available in many sizes and
with different cuts of the pieces. They may be
cardboard or wood. There are even threedimensional jigsaw puzzles.
Contests exist for solvers to challenge
themselves against others in teams or alone.
