The GSY committee would like to reflect back to our very successful Diwali Dinner, 2009. The key ingredient of a successful event is team work, and we accomplished this with the GSY committee, members, and volunteers. The evening began with the GSY members serving a scrumptious dinner to the youth, and at the same time enjoying chatting and socializing with everyone. After that, the GSY members were recognized on stage because of the start of a new year. The evening continued as we pumped the crowd to set a tone for a fun filled dance night. The excellent performance“Nache de Punjabi Gabaroo” by the Bhangra team did not only set the tone, but had everyone on their feet. The dance was not only a success, but a fantastic way to bond with our fellow GSY members. The night was still young, as DJ Kuku continued to play amazing songs till the very end. As we start another exciting New Year, we should all feel proud that we had a spectacular success at our Diwali Dinner, 2009. The GSY committee anxiously looks forward to contributing to all events for the community. -Megha Vashi, Public Relations GSY/JOY Movie Night They GSY youth committee has successfully accomplished various events throughout the year of 2009, many of which are set out to assist others less fortunate, and in great need of help. Out of the many events, the GSY/JOY Movie Night not only was an excellent opportunity to bond with our fellow JOY members and enjoy a fun-filled night with movies, but its main focus was to collect as many toys/donations as we could to fund the Toys for Tots organization. By achieving this grateful event, we accomplished our goal by raising eight full boxes and bags consisting of wondrous toys and money that will be donated to this charitable foundation. From there, these appreciative toys and donations will be distributed to the needy children for the holidays. This event was hosted at the Jain temple on December 11th 2009, who we also gladly thank for all their support. All in all, without the effortless help of the members from GSY and JOY organization, this special task could not be succeeded without everyone’s help and positive attitude for the desire of lending out a helping hand to children in need by donating to Toys for Tots. -Shivani Thakore, Publications GSY Bowling Night A new year for Gujarati Samaj Youth (GSY) began successfully as the 2010 team got to work. Our first official bonding event was on October 11, 2009 at Drakeshire Lanes in Farmington Hills. The GSY family spent an evening bowling, socializing, and getting to know each other. All of the members were randomly distributed into teams that were spread out between numerous lanes. This guaranteed that everyone was able to meet and be better acquainted with one another. We shared laughs while bowling or even off to the side getting a quick snack. Many great memories were made as some unlikely GSY members proved to be excellent bowlers. The event was definitely a fun experience and put the organization on the right path of a much anticipated year. Nirmal Pathak, Publications. Christmas Treats for the Needy Our goal in the Gujarati Samaj Youth is not only to promote our culture, but also to help out in community we live in. Although many of us comfortably enjoyed their holidays in the past month or two, there were many unfortunate homeless and needy people in Michigan who may have not been able to have enough food or have shelter during the cold winter days. However as a part of GSY, we were able to get together and spend our time and lively energy to pack food in boxes for the needy people. About 30 GSY members got together with high spirits, bright and early on a Saturday morning, ready to help out at the Focus Hope Distribution Center in downtown Detroit. The members combined their teamwork and selfless spirits to pack food in boxes in an assembly line, which eventually were sent out to trucks that came to get the food. GSY alone packed enough boxes of food to feed 1,330 families!!! This was a good bonding event for the GSY group because we worked so well together for a good cause. It was amazing to see how enthusiastic our fellow members were to bond with new members while working at the same time. After a couple of hours of tiring work, everyone sat and talked over sandwiches, chips, and pop. This was such a good experience and it definitely made everyone feel accomplished to have helped so many people.
