The XXX Olympic games were held in London from July 27 to
August 12 and USA won 104 medals with the athletic population of 539. India send 83 athletic and won 6 medals. This is
not bad since we do not have major sponsor as United States
athletics. If cricket or “gilli danda” was an Olympic events
then I bet India would win a gold medal in both sport.

prayers are with the victims and their families of Oak Creek
shooting and the whole Sikh community. We as a community,
call upon the relevant authorities to invoke initiatives to protect citizens of all faith from similar acts in the future.
Our annual picnic was held at Edgewater Park and the attendance was shy this year, We hope more members shall attended in the future and support our organization. As always,

Summer also brings high school graduation and once again, Cleveland Gujarati
Samaj Trustee committee will award three scholarship to high school graduate.
Application is open to any Gujarati Samaj member’s high school graduating
children. The award will judged by GPA, extra circular activity, sports, and on a
personal assay. Deadline for this application is November 4, 2012.
Since Navratri will be celebrated in a short time this October , I investigated the
meaning and significance of Navratri and learned a lot that would be of interest
to our younger generation.
Navratri means nine nights dedicated to the Divine Mother of Shakti in the
Hindu mythology. This is the longest celebration in the month of Ashwin
Mahina. Ashwin Mahina is the last month of the gujarati calendar and it begins
on the new moon of the autumn equinox.
Navratri is celebrated five times a year. They are Vasanta Navratri, Ashadha
Navratri, Sharada Navratri, and Paush/Magha Navratri. Of these, Sharada Navratri is the most important of all the Navratris. It is simply called Maha Navratri
and is celebrated in the month of Ashvina (Aso maas). It starts on October 16
and ends on November 13, 2012. Navratri and Diwali festivals are celebrated in
Ashvina month.

EVENT NEWS
This year Samaj is hosting two Navratri events at Tri-C Community College, Cleveland,
downtown campus on October 20, and October 27, 2012. The first event will be with a DJ
with a dholi player and a live group on October 27. This events is free for members, and
$5.00 for non-members. Please become a member this year and save!
Diwali dinner and musical night will be at held at Independence High School, 6111 Archwood
Road, Independence, Ohio 44131, on Nov 10, 2012. Cost of the ticket are $35.00 and $50.00
per person and may be purchased from any committee member. See flyers with this newsletter for details.
