We started the day off with the committee and other helpers setting up the Funday venue with laying out the tracks to setting up the football pitch, I would like to say a big thank you to all our helpers on the day. An event truly for the all the family, the bouncy castle was there and a great entertainment for all the kids and adults that wanted to have a go. A few games of rounder's were organised for all to join in, mixed teams, and some great hits from some of our members. Also a few games were played which were lots of fun and for all to enjoy. The track races with hoops and obstacles was a great fun for the children and the adults alike. There was also a game of Football setup for the youngsters that wanted show off their Rooney and Gerrard skills. We also held our AGM this year at the Funday which was also a success with a round of drinks for all aswell. This year we are planning on having a bigger event than last year. It has been some time since we have communicated anything out to our Samaj members. A lot has been happening since our last newsletter/event. We have had some great events like the Funday which took place in September last year — more details are on the back page. We also held our Navratri function, although last year we only held the event for the weekends. This year we are considering a various number of options but we need your help , see page 5 for full details on how you can help. There was also the Diwali show and the all popular Dinner and Dance as well. And not forgetting one of most successful events of the last year the Kids XMAS party. All updates for these events can be found in your newsletter. Family Bowling Bonanza The management committee has been very busy in setting up events for the coming year. We are holding a Bowling event for the family (on 21st May), where you will all be able to come along and enjoy a couple of games of bowling at your local Bowling alley. This event is for the family to come and have some competitive fun, see page 2 for more details but don't miss out, contact us with confirmation by 1st May 2011. 2pm onwards This year we are planning on holding the Funday early in the year, Saturday 16th July 2011, we are going to be make the event bigger and better than the past years, we have lined up some football and cricket tournaments, track races, some great food and lots more fun activities for all the family, more details on page 3. Bishop Douglass School Our Diwali show will also be taking place on Sunday 30th October 2011, we are looking for our members to come forward and take part in the event. See page 4 for more details. We have also been looking at ways of involving our Samaj members in all different ways and we have come up with a fantastic idea called LPS GHARS. Tina (Arak Sisodra) came up with this idea. It will be good for all members to participate and will benefit your ‗Hare Potter‘ style HOUSE. See page 2 for more details. We have had many questions about our UK Samaj Diaries, there is more information on page 4—Find out how to purchase your Diary. Anand R. Patel (President) Hollywood Bowls, Finchley. PAGE 2 SANDESH—APRIL 2011 PAGE 7 SANDESH—APRIL 2011 Christmas 2010 saw the return of the Kids Christmas Party on Sunday 5th December - and what a return it was! Attended by 54 children and their parents the main hall at the Bishop Douglas School was full with people and the booming sound of children having fun! There was something for all the children, whose ages ranged from 1 to 11 years of age. The party kicked off at 2pm with a variety of free play: on the bouncy castle, on the crafts table, penalty shoot out, tin can knock down, face painting and even the toddlers had their own soft play area. An hour later the fabulous children‘s entertainer made a lively appearance! After successfully capturing the kids attention, they all sat very sensibly with almost muted excitement to watch the entertainer do tricks, jokes and introduce all the children to a big furry pet rabbit he had brought along. He gave prizes, made animals out of balloons and played music for the kids to dance to. At half time he skilfully formed a huge human train with the kids and led them to their lunch table……the children then enjoyed a variety of party food at festive looking tables. Even the parents were allowed nibbles! They had also been able to enjoy complimentary refreshments and socialise in the parents area. In fact many of them enjoyed the entertainment from the entertainer as much as the children did! While the party was going on children had the opportunity to visit Santa in his grotto and receive a substantial present each as apparently they had all been good boys and girls in 2010! While visiting Santa the children had their photos taken, which were subsequently printed, framed and given as a memory, complimentary of the Samaj. The event was incredibly successful but if you have any suggestions for improvement please email [email protected]. (otherwise known as the LPS Samaj house system) We have decided it's time the Samaj has some fun again and we know you all like a bit of healthy competition. So as an ongoing permanent feature for the LPS of London we will have a House system coming soon! What is the 'Ghar' System and how it works: A Ghar/house is basically a team. Every Person in the Samaj will belong to a team known as a 'Ghar'. The committee will put everyone into teams according to your gaam and district. The names of the houses will be chosen by the LPS committee. They will also be colour co-ordinated and every person will have a badge of their house colour. We will announce the names and colours at a later stage. People earn house points for all sorts of things ie: good work ,participation, entering competitions, showing initiative, winning games and so on. There will also be several other activities and competitions arranged involving the houses ie Aarti and dance Competitions at Navratri, fun day/ Sporting events. Writing articles for newsletter Competitions, Diwali show performances, raising money, proposing new ideas and initiatives etc. On a yearly basis The House with the most points wins a BIG prize for the house to enjoy and of course a trophy! House Captains: Each house to have a captain and 3 supporters from different age groups. All that house captains have to do is encourage their house to participate at events, pass on information and decide collectively what to do with the winning prize!! Nothing really changes, you just do what you normally do but have more fun doing it and have a goal to work towards! Remember you have to be in it to win it, but it's the taking part that counts!! Look forward to this years Kids XMAS party which will be on Sunday 4th December 2011 Also apologies for not sending photos of some of the kids with Santa. Please contact [email protected] if you would still like your photo‘s. PAGE 6 SANDESH—APRIL 2011 Diwali/Navratri Update.... So another year has passed and yet again the Diwali show was a great success.. Were seeing more of a variety from our performers and also seeing some new faces taking to the stage...I want to take this opportunity to thank all performers and organisers for making this event such a great one. It takes alot of planning and organisation so thanks to all that contribute the show.. If you are interested in taking part for this years show or would like to help out in any aspect of the show, please contact me on 07886732671 or email [email protected]. One of our main events each year along side the Diwali show is Navratri. Last year due to lack of participation we decided to economise on costs and have a joint function with the Prajapati Samaj. Thank you to those few that did show their support for the Samaj and turned up to garba nearly everyday. Guys we do still need your support for this function. If truth be told the turnouts during the week seems to be reducing year on year. I'm kindly asking for any feedback from you guys that will contribute to increasing our turnout to how it used to be. Also if anybody knows of a band or has any contacts for a band to perform at the Navratri function please get in touch by either email or phone from the above details. My aim is to get this function were it used to be...I can’t do this without your help and support...Thanks in Advance...Minesh. Dinner and Dance: November 2010. Well what a fantastic dinner and dance we had last year, on 13th November with people coming from all over England and as far as Preston. After feed back from last year we decided to go back to the Wembley Plaza (Hilton) and use Ragamama for catering. This turned out to be a popular choice. This year we had a Hollywood theme with a Samaj Walk of Fame and Oscars Awards. We had a few amazing awards including a SURPRISE ‗Granny Of The Year‘ award which was given to Mr Anand Patel our President for his outstanding appearances at our Diwali Show every year. The night was a great success, with awards for ‗Best dressed Male‘ which was won by Minesh Patel (Samalfalia - Bilston) dressed as ‗Spidereman‘ and ‗Best dressed Female‘ won by Arjinder. ‗Sexiest Female‘ was won by Anika Keiran Patel. and ‗Sexiest Male‘ was won by Sunil. We had excellent feed-back on how brilliant the night was and lots of people are looking forward to the next one. It would be nice to see a few more of our Samaj members attending our dinner and dance. I am sure that if you come once, you will want to attend again. A great excuse to dance, get merry and generally have fun. Hopefully we shall be arranging another dinner and dance this year, we look forward to seeing all our loyal members there, an opportunity to mingle and meet new people, and on a final note, thank you to everyone who attended and congratulations to all the award winners. Mina Patel – Committee Member. PAGE 3 SANDESH—APRIL 2011 PAGE 4 SANDESH—APRIL 2011 Diaries'—Where are they? PAGE 5 SANDESH—APRIL 2011 What are we doing about Navratri this year? The answer to this question lies with you as our members of the Samaj. The UK diaries have arrived and are available for collection for each of our Samaj Members. If you are a paid life or annual member then you are entitled to a UK diary. The diaries are at a cost of £5.00 for each diary for each member, there is only one diary per member and spares cannot be purchased at present. A few other regional Samaj‘s have not charged their members for the diaries. The London Samaj management committee has decided to charge for the diaries. The diaries are available at our next London function, ―Family Bowling Bonanza‖, see details on page 2. Or you can collect your diary from the following people, collection is only by appointment , a courtesy call for collecting the diaries would be appreciated. Contacts for diaries are: Shaylesh (Hammersmith): 020 8748 7978 Dipak (Kingsbury): 020 8358 3790 Babita (Edgware): 020 8952 4882 What would you like to do for Navratri this year? Last year we only held Garba/Dandia Rass at the weekends and on the weekdays we had the option of going to the Prajpati hall. We have had some feedback to say that some people would like for our Samaj to go back to the nine nights of Navratri. Last year we made cut backs due to financial cost and also due to the number of people that attend on the weekdays. We would like to hear from you as to what you would like to do? At present we have not made a fixed decision on if we should be doing Garba/Dandia Rass for nine nights or just the weekend. We have looked at the option of joining with another Samaj, but at present this is not possible. We are also open to suggestions for other halls maybe which would cater for our small numbers on the weekdays. AGM 2010—Update As each year we are now in the hunt of a new band, so your suggestions on which type of band, music or even if you know of any bands please put your suggestions forward. This year's AGM was the best attended for a number of years because it was combined with our Fun Day (& there was a round of drinks included!). We are always looking for your feedback and views on how we should do our events, not just for Navratri but for all other events. Thank you to those that attended and your support over the year. We announced the launch of the Youth Group (contact Minesh if you are young and interested) and had some new members join the Trustee and Management Team. Congratulations to Vinodbhai Purshottambhai (Asta), Vandanaben Kiritbhai (Vihan), Bipinbhai Bhulabhai (Umrakh) and Mahendrabhai B Patel (Bhutsad). As well as the Youth, we would like to see some more of the older community members on the committee or helping remotely, as suggested during the AGM. Please contact the President or Secretary if you would like to know more. Diwali Show: 2011 Come forward and join in the celebration of Diwali by taking part at this years show.
