The work is an exploration of portraiture and scale through the most
democratic of mediums: charcoal. Using the carbonaceous material
obtained by burning a piece of dead, dry wood, I sought to do as mankind
has done for thousands of years — to make a series of marks which render
a three-dimensional object accurately in the second dimension. The time
spent laboring on the piece allowed for many nights of deep meditation on
the primitive medium of charcoal and its role in an increasingly digital world.

COLLEGE FOR CREATIVE STUDIES
Welcome to the 31st Detroit International Wine Auction benefiting the College for Creative
Studies (CCS). This event has grown to be the largest wine auction in the region, and one
of the biggest auctions in the country. You, our donors, have made this happen through
your generosity and your commitment to advancing the creative spirit in Detroit.
This year’s Auction Chairs, Ed and Rhonda Welburn, have done an outstanding job of connecting
the creativity of CCS alumni to this event. Ed’s team, which consists of nearly 200 CCS alumni,
has transformed the environment of the General Motors Design Center, built in 1956, into
a wonderful venue for tonight’s celebration. Our Featured Vintner, Manuel Louzada, Estate
Director for Spanish winery Numanthia, has put together a wonderful lineup of wines, and
a superb Featured Vintner’s Grand Lot including a visit to their winery. My thanks also go
to General Motors, which is once again our Lead Sponsor and continues its legacy of support
for the school from which it recruits so many talented designers.
The College for Creative Studies believes in the value of creativity and the potential of

CCS’s commitment to community service is evident in many ways. It co-founded and co-manages,
with the Henry Ford Learning Institute, the Henry Ford Academy: School for Creative Studies,
a public charter middle school and high school focusing on strong academics and art and design,
located in the Taubman Center. Fall 2012 enrollment is more than 800 students. CCS’s Community
Arts Partnerships program collaborates with community organizations to deliver free art
education experiences in Detroit’s neighborhoods to 4,000 at-risk students annually. CCS also
co-founded and co-manages, with Business Leaders for Michigan, the Detroit Creative Corridor
Center (DC3), an initiative to attract creative businesses and people to Downtown and Midtown
Detroit, to develop an economically productive creative sector in the city. The College’s Benson
and Edith Ford Conference Center hosts a wide variety of conferences focusing on art, design,
innovation and urban revitalization, as well as other community events.

is through support from the Detroit International Wine Auction that these creative endeavors
continue to grow.

Rhonda D. Welburn
Ed and Rhonda Welburn are honored and delighted to serve as the 2012 Wine Auction Chairs,
and they wish everyone a memorable evening. And this year, they are pleased to host everyone
at the GM Design Center for the first time ever.
Even as a young boy when he began sketching cars at age two, GM Vice President of Global Design
Ed Welburn had an intense passion for design. At age 11, he wrote a letter to GM to inquire about
careers in car design and the necessary education. Today, he holds the top design job at the
company and is responsible for the design of all production and concept vehicles globally.
Ed has followed in the footsteps of legendary GM design leaders, such as Harley Earl, to become
just the company’s sixth design chief in history and the first to lead all of its global design operations.
Ed leads a team of more than 1,900 creative designers — including nearly 200 graduates from the
College for Creative Studies — working in 10 Design Centers in seven countries.
He received his bachelor’s degree from the College of Fine Arts at Howard University where he
studied sculpture and product design. A 40-year veteran of GM, he is a member of the Executive
Operations Committee, the Board of the GM Foundation, and the Board of Trustees at CCS. In
addition, he has been recognized by numerous organizations over the years, including: Motor
Trend, the Detroit Free Press, Black Enterprise and LeMay — America’s Car Museum.
Rhonda is an attorney and member of Dickinson Wright PLLC, one of the largest law firms in the
area. Since joining the firm, she has specialized in the area of municipal law and finance, helping
traditional school districts, charter schools, and state and local governments issue bonds and notes
to provide for working capital and to pay for public projects and various capital improvements.
She also has expertise in the banking and real estate practice areas. But she especially enjoys
and gets great satisfaction from her municipal finance practice, because each transaction has
a public purpose and generates important funding for such public uses as affordable housing
and public schools.
Rhonda is deeply committed to community betterment, and her civic involvement includes serving
on the Board of Directors of the Detroit Institute of Arts, the DMC Legacy Board and the Board
of Trustees of the Health and Wellness Foundation. She also currently serves as President of the
Shipley Family Foundation. In addition, she was appointed by Mayor Dave Bing in 2009 to serve
on the Elected Officials Compensation Commission.
She has a BS from Howard University, an MBA from the University of Detroit-Mercy, and a JD
from the University of Michigan Law School.
Ed and Rhonda have two adult children and reside in the Palmer Woods neighborhood of Detroit.

Auctioneer
Fritz Hatton is the one of the nation’s leading wine auctioneers. His wine auction experience
commenced in 1980, when he joined Christie’s to help start its Wine Department in the United
States. After a musical sabbatical in the early 1990s he returned to Christie’s and served as
Director of Christie’s U.S. Wine Department from 1995 to 1998. In this capacity, and in partnership
with the leading American wine retailer Zachys, he was responsible for the largest auctions
of wine organized to date in the United States. In 2002 he joined the prominent retailer
Zachys as auctioneer for its new solo wine auction venture and continues to serve as Zachys’
principal auctioneer.
Since 1983 Hatton has conducted charity auctions throughout the U.S., most involving
wine in support of arts, educational and medical charities. In addition to Imagine (Sonoma
County Children’s Charities), the New York Philharmonic, Napa Valley Opera House, Peninsula
Center for the Blind, Make-a-Wish Foundation, PONCHO, the Perlman Music Program, and
numerous educational charities in San Francisco and Napa, he has served as auctioneer
for Auction Napa Valley since 1992, and as principal auctioneer since 1998.

In the fall of 1998 Hatton became a vintner when he returned to California to launch Arietta,
a microbrand featuring handmade Bordeaux-styled Napa red wines. He now resides in Saint
Helena, California with his wife Caren, 12-year-old daughter Libby, and seven-year-old daughter
Hattie. In rare moments away from selling wine, he pursues his hobby as an amateur classical
pianist, and has recently performed with pianists Garrick Ohlsson and Emmanuel Ax, and the
soprano Barbara Bonney.
This is Fritz Hatton’s 11th time serving as auctioneer for the Detroit International Wine
Auction, and we welcome him back!

(12) 750 ML 2002 Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Donated by Jim and Mary Beth Nicholson
A fabulously rich wine, the 2002 Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon, meriting 93 points from
Wine Spectator, is intense, with a tannic structure, a deep core of fruit, blackberry, blueberry
and cherry, nuanced with spice, tobacco, licorice and dusty, toasted oak. It is rich, mouthcoating,
balanced and complex, ending in a long, velvety finish. Far Niente, the critically acclaimed,
250-acre Napa Valley wine estate, founded by Gil Nickel in 1979, also in Oakville, known as
Cab Country, is renowned for producing luxury, estate-bottled Cabernet Sauvignon and

Bodega Numanthia was established in 1998 in Zamora, Spain, by the Eguren family. A luxury
brand, the super-premium wines are sourced from the Tinta de Toro grape on century-old vines
growing on tiny plots in 40 hectares of vineyards in the region of Castilla y Leon. A combination
of unique terroir, exceptional vineyard and a quintessential expression of fruit, make it one of
the cult wineries of the Toro region of Spain. Numanthia is the estate’s signature wine, displaying
blackberry, violet, espresso, bitter chocolate, licorice, Earth, dust, leather, lush spice and cedar.
The wines are suave, smooth, thick, firm and round, with bright acidity, fine-grained tannins,
lovely perfume and exceptional length. Bodega Numanthia’s Termanthia is a blockbuster wine,
splendid, massive, deep and powerful, extraordinarily complex yet still elegant, round and rich.
Aromas and flavors of gobs of deep and intense black fruit, Earth and spice are wrapped in
a fine mineral framework. These are highly sought after, very distinctive, ageworthy wines
among Spain’s best.
Donated by Sandra and Jim Vandenberghe
Lafite, Bordeaux’s most famous property and wine, has become a name synonymous with wealth,
prestige, history, respect and wines of remarkable longevity. A First Growth, renowned for its
elegant, compelling wines, the 1999 merited 95 points from Robert Parker, calling it a modern
day clone of the majestic 1953. It is deep and prodigious, elegant yet intensely flavored and
complex, with extravagant layers of richness. Aromas and flavors display currant, flowers, coconut,
mint, cherry, berry, mineral, lead pencil, cedar, toast and vanilla. The wine is firm, tight and precise,
with a long finish resembling a faded rose.
Chateau Margaux has been literally resurrected since being purchased by the Mentzelopoulos
family in the late 1970s, producing since then a string of close to perfect wines. Robert Parker
said the chateau has been transformed from a struggling First Growth into a brilliantly consistent
wine of stunning grace, richness and complexity. Margaux’s style is one of opulent richness,
a deep, multi-dimensional bouquet with a fragrance of ripe dark fruit, spicy vanilla oak and violets.

Insignia, Joseph Phelps’ flagship wine, has a tremendous track record dating back to its debut
vintage of 1974. A Bordeaux-inspired blend, recognized as one of the world’s great wines, displays
uncommon depth, concentration and complexity. From 1990 to 2008, Parker’s average score
for Insignia was 94.5. The 1997, the oldest Insignia in the lot is still vibrant and intense, packed
with rich fruit, auguring well for the life expectancy of Insignia. All of these wines are world class,
powerful yet elegant and stylish, capable of cellaring for 20 to 30 years. The wines are seductive,
opulent, seamless and symmetrical with aromas and flavors of currant, berry, incense, mineral,
flowers, cassis and oak, with well-integrated acids, tannins and alcohol.

Gustav and Naoko Dalla Valle established their winery in 1986 on 21 acres on a plateau overlooking
Oakville, planting the vineyards in Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The name Dalla Valle
is synonymous with quality and excellence. Maya is named after the couple’s daughter. According
to Robert Parker, the finest Cabernet Franc in the world comes from Dalla Valle’s vineyard. Parker
awarded the 1995 Maya 96 to 98 points. A blend of 45% Cabernet Franc and 55% Cabernet
Sauvignon, the multidimensional, fruit-driven wine is intense, massive, deeply concentrated,
complex and seamless, with juicy fruit of currant, blackberry and cherry, laced with mint and spice.

This is a wonderful opportunity to taste one of Bordeaux’s Top Growths over a period of three
decades. The wines all exhibit the classic Mouton characteristics of cedar, Earth, tobacco, lead
pencil and black fruit albeit in varying degrees. The 1966 and 1970 Moutons have lovely old
Bordeaux noses. They are fully evolved, at a peak, but holding, past their prime but the fruit
is still there, showing delicate, elegant, cassis, mineral, exotic spice, black truffle and mineral.
The 1975 Mouton has a lovely bouquet of chocolate, cassis, cedar and spice, with similar flavors
revealing added notes of sweet plum, black cherry, Earth, tobacco, mint and pepper. The wine
is still fresh and bright. The 1982 Mouton is full-flavored, with luscious and beautiful red fruit,
exotic spice, white pepper, flowers, black currant, tobacco and mineral. The wine is still youthful,
full of life, long and continuing to evolve, seductive and highly extracted. The 1983 Mouton is
fully evolved and at a peak, but still sublime, showing cedar, cassis, game, oak, leather, spice
and mineral. It is silky, complex and elegant, offering class and finesse. The 1989 Mouton has
a heavenly bouquet of cassis, chocolate, Chinese plum sauce, tobacco and mineral, all of which
are mirrored on the palate, culminating in a long, exotic finish. The wine is bright, fresh and still
youthful. The 1989 Mouton was awarded 99 from Wine Spectator and was one of the Spectator’s
top 100 wines in 1992. Mouton-Rothschild, one of Bordeaux’s leading First Growths, is the place
and wine that the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild singularly created. He has been the only
person able to effectuate a change in the 1855 classification of the wines of the Medoc.
608
This seductively styled Cheval Blanc, delicious from its youth, continues to develop beautifully,
although fully mature. The wine is loaded with sweet plum, chocolate, coffee and black
currant, with menthol and cola. Awarded 92 points from Robert Parker, it is lush, full, soft,
round, balanced, richly fruity and flavorful. A very enticing package, the wine is delicious,
opulent, plush, concentrated, sexy, silky, velvety and smooth. Cheval Blanc, at the top of
the St. Emilion hierarchy, along with Chateau Ausone, is decadently exotic, opulently rich
and voluptuous. A blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, it has one of the broadest windows
of drinkability among all Bordeaux wines.

2002 Cos d’Estournel – A Candidate for Wine of the Vintage
(1) 3 L 2002 Chateau Cos d’Estournel St. Estephe
Donated by Friends of CCS
A magnificent Medoc, Cos d’Estournel, a super Second Growth and a famed estate, produces
one of the Medoc’s finest wines. The wine is distinguished by the high percentage of Merlot used
in the blend, about 40%, and the elevated use of new oak casks, 60% to 100%. This proportion of
Merlot accounts for the fleshy, richly textured character. Impeccably managed by Jean-Guillaume
Prats, son of the renowned Bruno Prats, has eliminated any filtration of the wine in the 2002
vintage. Awarded 93 points from Robert Parker and the Wine Spectator, the 2002 is a candidate
for wine of the vintage, a real beauty and a brilliant effort. It has a classic, noble nose of graphite
intermixed with black currant, spice box, licorice, red and black fruit, espresso, leather, cedar,
smoke and chocolate. The wine is silky and lush, with perfectly integrated acidity, velvety tannins,
a terrific multilayered texture and exceptional length.

A beautiful Harlan, with 25+ years of life ahead, the wine is tight, complex, concentrated, dense,

tastes are amazing, offering creme de cassis, licorice, graphite, dried currant, berries, black
cherry, cedary oak, Earth and mineral.

Don’t Duck Out on This Wine
(1) 1.5 L 2002 Duckhorn Vineyards Estate Grown 25th Harvest Cuvee
Back to Basics was inspired by the architect/designer Le Corbusier and
his belief in purism. The theory is that an object, whether it is a piece of
furniture or a painting, remains true to itself. The shapes used in the space
emulate this idea. For example, the rectangle that creates the back of
the sofa is similar to the rectangle that is used for the arms of the sofa.
However, when the objects are married together it creates a clean and
simplistic object. The repetition of the simplistic shapes and forms used
create a unified space.
Donated by Friends of CCS
For the 2002 vintage, their 25th in Napa, Duckhorn used the most outstanding lots from four
of their estate vineyards to create an exceptional Napa Valley Red Wine reflecting the diversity
of the vineyard portfolio. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc,
the Wine Spectator accorded the wine 90 points. It is a beautiful blend of estate fruit, complex,
full-bodied, well-balanced, structured, supple and harmonious, big and sturdy, and ageworthy.
The wine offers subtle aromas of lavender, spice and herbs complemented by blackberry, cassis
and cedar. The flavors are lush and layered with cherry, raspberry, currant and plum, followed
by essence of chocolate, tobacco and toffee. Duckhorn was co-founded by Dan and Margaret
Duckhorn in 1976. Duckhorn has crafted a tradition of quality and excellence and is one of
North America’s premier producers of Bordeaux varietals.

Earth from Latin). Since its debut vintage in 2010, Verterra has already risen to the top tier
of the Leelanau Peninsula wineries. The Hamelin’s motto is stay “true to the land” and their
handcrafted, family-made wines embody the essence of what Leelanau Peninsula provides.
The Pinot Blanc is lively, bright and dry offering tropical fruit, pear, green apple, kiwi, a clean,

apple, with excellent balance, good acids and length and a vibrant, crisp style from its stainless
steel fermentation. Verterra’s tasting room is situated in the heart of Leland across from the

(2) 1.5 L 2003 Joseph Phelps Vineyards Insignia
Donated by Friends of CCS
Phelps Insignia, Napa’s first proprietary Bordeaux blend, has been one of California’s greatest
Cabernet blends for decades. Recognized as one of the world’s great wines, Insignia displays
uncommon depth, concentration and complexity. Joseph Phelps’ flagship wine, Insignia has
a tremendous track record dating back to its debut vintage of 1974. From 1990 to 2007,
Robert Parker’s average score for Insignia was 94.5. With the release of the 1974 vintage
of Insignia in 1978, Phelps became the first California winery to produce a blend of the
traditional Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grape varieties
under their proprietary label. Insignia has been the benchmark of this category for over
25 years. The 2003 30th anniversary bottling, is worthy of the tradition, ultra-rich and
smooth, with a velvet mouthfeel and a complex interplay of blackberry, dark chocolate,
spicy plum, licorice, black currant, espresso roast and toasty oak. A blend of 84% Cabernet
Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and rest Malbec and Merlot, the wine is full, opulent and juicy,
with outstanding depth, purity, harmony, length and sweet tannins. This very ageworthy
wine, showcases Insignia’s hallmark polish and balance, scoring 96 points from Wine
Enthusiast and 94 points from Robert Parker.
Silver Oak, long one of California’s most successful wineries, is a well-known producer of top-flight,
high-quality Cabernet prized for its deep, concentrated, ripe fruit. The wines are richly textured
and opulent on the day of their release as well as after 20+ years of aging, attributable to extended
aging in both barrel and bottle. The 2003 is a Bordeaux blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon,
13% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The wine features black cherry, blackberry,
violets and spice. With complex fruit, an elegant mid-palate and a long finish, it will continue to
improve through 2024 given proper cellaring.

wine has proven time and again to be consistently excellent and amazingly ageworthy. Robert
Mondavi, the icon of California’s wine industry, is renowned for his lovely Cabernets from that

This lot is an eclectic collection of distinctive, little-known, top-quality wines. The Cantine Valpane
Barbera del Monferrato is quite different from Barbera in Asti and Alba thanks to its high-quality
terroir. The 18th century Piedmont estate, owned by the Arditi family has 30 hectares of vineyards
and extensive wine cellars, with modern winemaking equipment. The 2006 wine has aromas and
flavors of spicy fruit, red and black cherries, tobacco, leather, licorice, chocolate and Earth. It is
very refreshing, clean, silky, rich, concentrated, soft and delicious, a great accompaniment to food.
The 2005 Ardiles, from the Priorat, one of Spain’s most dynamic wine regions, awarded 91 by
Robert Parker, is a blend of 45% Garnacha, 34% Carinena, 18% Syrah and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon.
The wine is vibrant, velvety yet firm, seamless and forward, with lively acidity and a juicy finish,
displaying scents and tastes of blueberry, cherry, anise, mint, vanilla, mineral and slate. The Familia
Eguren who owns and operates the Senorio de San Vicente has been growing Tempranillo in the
region since 1870. The 2001 San Vicente is complex, delicious, ripe, pure and tight, redolent of black
cherry, Earth, toast and mineral. The high-density, low-yielding vines have produced a soft, elegant,
balanced, structured wine. The 2007 Marques de Gelida Pinot Noir Rosado Brut Reserva Cava has
a lovely perfume of forest fruit, red berries, cherries, rhubarb and flowers. The flavors are similar,
with added notes of plum, pepper and toasty caramel. The wine is clean, fresh, balanced, structured
and crisp, with a delightful finish.

Baccarat is the world’s finest crystal. The Harcourt stemware collection of Rhine wine glasses
was designed by Savinel & Rose. The traditional pattern was created in 1825 for the Duke
of Harcourt and selected in 1917 by HH Pope Benedict XV for use at the Vatican. Its chalice-like
shape, deep flat-cutting, brilliance and sturdiness allow it to blend ideally in both traditional and
contemporary settings. The glass is handcrafted full-lead crystal made in France. Baccarat Crystal
has, from the beginning, affixed its signature on strong works illustrating all the facets of artistic
craftsmanship and covering a vast repertoire of inspiration. In 1764 King Louis XV of France gave
Bishop Montmorency-Laval of Metz permission to found a glassworks in the village of Baccarat
located in Lorraine in eastern France.

For classic White Burgundy, look no further than Domaine Leflaive as the wines are remarkably

Joseph Leflaive, his children Vincent and Joseph established the domaine’s exceptional worldwide
reputation. The biodynamic estate is now run by Vincent’s daughter, Anne-Claude. The 1999
Clavoillon is rich, full, nutty, complex, balanced and fresh, with creamy notes of tropical fruit,
coconut, citrus, white flowers, lemon rind, straw and mineral. The 1999 Les Pucelles is beautifully
perfumed with butter, smoke, hazelnut, flowers and layers of pear, lemon, orange and apple,

elegant, lovely, complex, deep and harmonious, with ripe fruit, full body and a firm finish.
Far Niente, a Napa Valley superstar, produces luxurious, elegant, estate-bottled Cabernets,
highly sought after for their ability to age gracefully and become more complex and elegant
with time. The critically acclaimed Napa Valley wine estate is situated in Oakville, known
as Cabernet Central. This vertical of Far Niente Cabernets from the 1980s shows how well
California Cabs age. All of the wines still offer lovely fruit, good acidity, sweet tannins, firm
structure, good balance and length. While mature, the fruit is rich, soft, smooth and round,
revealing a melt in the mouth quality that is very drinkable.

A very rare auction lot, these three wines, one from Bordeaux, one from Washington and one

Creek, a Washington First Growth, dedicated to producing world-class Washington State Cabernet
Sauvignon, has been named the State’s premier Cabernet producer by Robert Parker, as a result
of its unbroken string of highly rated vintages. Alex Golitzin, owner-winemaker, is related to Prince

wine is multidimensional, offering sandalwood, Asian spice, truffle, black currant, blackberry
and mineral. The seamless palate is mouthcoating, elegant yet powerful, impeccably balanced,
with fine-grained tannins and grand length. A 30-year wine. The Verite Le Desir, a Bordeaux
blend of 61% Cabernet Franc, 31% Merlot and the balance Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, is
extraordinarily perfumed and has a palate of great fruit intensity, full-bodied, textured and rich,
displaying blueberry, toast, licorice, camphor, incense, mineral, cassis, tobacco, spice box and
chocolate. The wine should have 35 to 40 years of life ahead. Pontet-Canet, a Fifth Growth, is
a lovely, charming wine, a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot,
and in recent years, thanks to a change in ownership and a vineyard of enormous potential,
it has been one of the emerging stars of the Medoc. Parker calls it amazing, a classic, full-bodied
quintessential Pontet Canet from Alfred Tesseron, a tour-de-force in winemaking, revealing
black fruit, incense, graphite, smoke, licorice, creme de cassis, blueberry, plum and spice, with
integrated acids and tannins. A 50+-year wine, it is rich, bright and fresh, with precise fruit.

The King of Pomerol – Chateau Petrus
An Evening to Make Bacchus Proud

Eight tickets to any upcoming Somm SLAM at Tallulah
Donated by Alphonse S. Lucarelli
Donated by Tallulah
Petrus, one of the most famous red wines in the world and the most celebrated wine of Pomerol,
garnering stratospheric prices at auction, conjures up Bordeaux at its most splendid, rarified and
luxurious. This bottle of Petrus has a distinctive legacy as it came from the cellar of the original
London Chop House. Petrus, generally a blend of about 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc,
has a unique terroir as its clay soil does not exist in another wine-producing region in the world.
The 1984 Petrus, aging gracefully, is near its peak, but still fresh and alive, delicate, complex and
refined, with soft, sweet fruit, displaying red cherry, ripe dark fruit, flowers, mocha, vanilla, coffee,
tobacco and an herbal note.
Mindy will provide eight tickets to any upcoming somm SLAM at Tallulah. Somm(elier) slams,
definitely not your typical wine dinner, are a fun and dynamic evening of food and wine pairings.
For each somm SLAM, a guest sommelier from another restaurant will go head to head in a
multi-course wine pairing challenge with Tallulah’s proprietor, Mindy Lopus. Throughout the
evening, the two sommeliers are on hand pouring, interacting, sharing (and trying to snag votes
from guests). Guests are the judges, voting for their favorite wine pairing from each course,
and at the end of the evening, votes are tallied and the winning somm is declared! The winning
somm gets bragging rights and a donation will be made to their favorite charity! Not included is
gratuity or any extras above and beyond the ticket. Ticket includes a four-course dinner with eight
perfectly matched wines and an aperitif. These exceptionally popular events are always sold out.

Established by Sir Peter Michael, a London-born computer engineer, in 1982 on a square mile
of rocky volcanic ridges that form the western face of Mt. St. Helena, the wine-growing philosophy
is modeled on French tradition with some modern influences. The emphasis is on vineyard terroir,
the production of elegant rather than overstated wines, and a 100-year commitment to the
development of a great estate. Peter Michael attributes his success to mountain vineyards,
classical winemaking and limited production. The Les Pavots wines are elegant, powerful yet
graceful, and consistently one of California’s high achievers. Robert Parker awarded the 1997
Les Pavots 96 points for its extraordinary bouquet of toast, blackberry, creme de cassis, licorice
and cedar. The wine is full-bodied, with low acidity and silky tannins, layers of concentrated fruit
wrapped in subtle toasty oak. The 1996, scoring 96 from Wine Spectator for its deliciously rich,
smooth, polished, concentrated palate, with layers of currant, blackberry, plum, vanilla and mocha.
The 2000, meriting 93 from Wine Enthusiast, is well-ripened, opulent, rich, decadent and huge,
nuanced with black currant, oak, smoke, vanilla and spice.

Crafts – Glass
The ultimate language of the human race is music; it is not words but
sounds and tones that truly strike the emotional chords of the human
subconscious. As human beings, we progress in evolution. Through
evolution, we become more aware of the different realities we exist in.
Music being the self-expressive reflection of our race, the more we evolve,
the more music does. Progressive is unlike any other genre of music. It
is not defined by the scale it is played in, or seen as belonging to any
certain point in history. Progressive is the genre of evolution, always

Lenore Gimpert
Fine Arts, ’95
A lifetime of work is a journey into her psyche. Gimpert’s paintings reveal a life well-lived,
full of struggle, joy, freedom, love and mortality. The Tu-Tu Series are full of color and beauty.
The Flower Series are emotional paintings demonstrating the cycles of a new birth of love.
Her award-winning originals are hanging in private and corporate collections, both in the
United States and internationally.
Crafts, ’99
Lauren Cohen’s artwork symbolizes a collaboration of thoughts, aesthetics and external influences
focusing on the concept of transformation. She investigates alteration and reformation through
a variety of materials and ideas. Representing these thoughts through a conversion of the chosen
mediums, Lauren explores the metamorphosis of the self-contained, to the freeness and rebirth.
Currently, she is concentrating on creating a relationship between a structured clay form and other
supple materials such as fluidity of glass on a solid ceramic body.
Born in 1977, Lauren Cohen grew up in Franklin, Michigan. After attending Birmingham Public
Schools, she began her formal art training at CCS. Studying a variety of techniques in the Crafts
and Fine Arts departments, Lauren developed many skills while exploring numerous mediums such
as clay, glass, wood, fiber and metal. In her third year at CCS, she partook in their mobility program,
venturing to the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), experiencing immense personal growth.
After graduating with honors from CCS, Cohen studied at Pilchuck, Chihuly’s Private Glass School,
lived in Israel working on an archeological dig and at an Israeli antiquities gallery, co-created
MiLa Expressions, a unique jewelry line, and attended Wayne State University for a Master of
Arts in Teaching Art Education.

Katherine Huber
Fine Arts, ’00
Katherine Huber (Abramczyk) has been a practicing artist for over 20 years. Her work has been
exhibited in a number of shows/galleries throughout Michigan as well as at the Corcoran Gallery
of Art in Washington, D.C. Huber’s belief is that artwork takes on many forms; abstract,
realism and everything in between. Creating art is an exploration of the past, present and
future, her pieces are expressions of where she has been, what she is interested in and where
she is going. Her artwork does not follow any specific genre; however she is deeply influenced
by Pop Art, modern culture, fashion and science. She believes her pieces are a reflection of
who she was, who she is and where she is headed.
This series of work relates to her experiences working with scientists and researchers at Wayne
State University on projects ranging from early concepts for retinal implants to the study of
neuronal activity in various animal models. Through her exposure of scientific imagery, she was
introduced to a world of subcellular beauty and microscopic magnificence and felt compelled
to share her interpretation of these images with people outside of the laboratory.

Katie Kunesh is a successful graphic designer who has worked in the industry for over 10 years.
She uses her talents to design a wide range of materials, including books, magazines, high-end
catalogues, identity systems, logos, packaging graphics and way-finding systems for a variety
of global and local clients, including General Motors Company, Somerset Collection, Mall at
Millennia, HOUR Media, Golf Association of Michigan, Crypton Super Fabrics, Holcim and
Ford & Earl Associates. Her work had been featured in numerous professional publications and
earned many honors. Most recently she has been featured in Print, HOW and Plazm magazines.
Currently, Katie maintains and evolves the brand at CCS as its Senior Graphic Designer.
History, tradition and technique are the main influences of every piece of work that Chris Nordin
does. These three sources are highly integrated together with Italian glass culture. Not limited
to traditional materials, Nordin’s work continually draws him toward alternative mixed media.
Knowing that the sculptural side of the work is the true challenge to Nordin’s creative processes,
this opens the door to the ever-challenging sport of technical blowing, allowing Chris to sharpen
his skills to a level that satisfies his technical needs. Technical glassblowing is an endless road,
which is why Nordin loves using glass as a medium, either as sculpture or sport.
Marcyanna Parzych
Robert Madvin
Fine Arts, ’94
Crafts, ’08
Robert Madvin was first introduced to glass while enrolled in high school by his older brother
Andrew Madvin, also a successful glass artist and CCS alum. He later studied glassblowing
at CCS and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. While earning his degree in Fine Arts from
CCS, Madvin began working with his brother to develop their own glass studio at the Russell
Industrial Center in Detroit. Now, eight years later, he continues to blow glass and cultivate his
work in that same studio space called Axiom Glass. Madvin’s primary inspiration derives from
nature; his artwork focuses on natural elements, textures, and color that he encounters in his
travels and his day-to-day endeavors. While studying in Hawaii he developed his most prominent
glass sculpture series called Pohaku, meaning “rock” or “stone.” Ancient Hawaiians would stack
stones upon one another to create rock sculptures used as navigational instruments throughout
the islands. Madvin encountered some of these organic tools while hiking various trails in Hawaii
and developed them into his glass stacked stone sculptures being shown at various art shows
and galleries throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Marcyanna Parzych’s visits to family in the mountains of Vermont at a young age created
a reverence for nature and a spiritual connection to the Earth that has informed her choices
since that time. During one trip in particular, at the age of four, she had a vision. This vision
remains, to this day, the single most important moment of her life. It gave her an understanding
of planet Earth, its place in the universe, and the interconnectedness of all life: plant, animal,
and planetary. To deepen her understanding of this interconnectedness she practices yoga
and meditation. Parzych’s current work reflects the influence of eastern thoughts and practices
by using symbols to create patterns, a practice executed for centuries throughout the East
and Middle East to remind the viewer of the underlying order and unity of nature.

Deborah Marlowe Kashdan
Fine Arts, ’80
Deborah Kashdan is a Detroit-born artist and has been active in the arts for over 30 years. She has
been juried and curated into numerous exhibitions in the metro Detroit area, and into national and
international competitions throughout the country, winning numerous first place awards for
excellence in painting. Most recently, she was awarded second place by juror Becky Hart in
“Review: CCS Alumni Selections, 2011.” Kashdan is currently exhibiting in the curated CAID/Whitdel
Arts “2011 Actual Size Biennial,” and “Our Town” at the Birmingham Community House. Upcoming
exhibitions include “Typography” at Whitdel Arts, and “Perspectives on Pain” at Work Detroit,
University of Michigan School of Art & Design. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Toyota
Museum in Toyota, Japan, and she is also in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution.
Contemporary modern design plays a big role in Michelle Plucinsky’s designs and glass sculpture.
Much of her work revolves around themes of nature and color patterns. She makes those ideas
interact within our daily lives and modern culture by producing works that are both beautiful and
interesting, creating a dialog with the viewer.
Although Plucinsky is classically trained as a glass craftsman, she currently find herself starting
to employ a variety of mixed media, from natural elements such as plants and foliage to wood and
metal that mimics nature. These materials help to fully embellish her ideas and create the finished
look she desires.

Fine Arts, ’10
Kevin McCoy’s fascination of letters turned into a body of work that deals with everyday issues
such as information bombardment, confusion and language. His abstract and representational
work is a literal translation between written language and visual language, taking away the
normal function of letters and making it an art object while maintaining a sense of humanity
in how we see ourselves and our peers.
62
Mimi Prussack’s intention is to create paintings that capture the warmth and tranquility she
experiences while hiking through majestic scenery. She observes the way light changes with
the different seasons and dances over the surfaces of the landscape. Whether it is the changing
color of the leaves, the falling snow, lakes and sandy beaches, or fields of wildflowers, the
goal is to create beautiful paintings with interesting patterns, textures and color. Prussack is
interested in capturing movement and energy while using different materials and techniques.

Jenny Risher’s continual strive for perfection, fresh style and natural sensibility has afforded
her the opportunity to photograph for many illustrious clients. Her photographs have been
published in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Noise, Marie Claire, Curve, Parents, Redbook,
Hour Detroit, and Men’s Health magazines. Advertising clients include: DKNY, Juicy Couture,
Kate Spade, Jack Spade, Hanes Corporation, Shiseido Cosmetics, Victoria’s Secret, Verizon,
and Kenneth Cole Productions. Jenny completed her first book with co-author Matt Lee, entitled:
Heart Soul Detroit. A self-produced venture, she interviewed and photographed 50 iconic
Detroiters, including Iggy Pop, Smokey Robinson, Jack White, Dr. Jack Kevorkian, Lily Tomlin,
Alice Cooper, Bill Ford Jr., Lee Iacocca and Tim Allen. Publication date is set for December 2012.
Joshua Wojick’s work is based in traditional furnace glassblowing. Technique is extremely
important to Joshua, for when it is mastered, possibilities become endless. Whether it is the
intricacies of goblet-making, or the physicality of working large-scale vessels, without the
necessary skills, one can’t create. Wojick believes that learning from past generations of
artists is fundamental in being able to innovate in the present. The act of creating is the
most rewarding for Joshua. The immediate demand of the material is simultaneously physical
and mental. Each moment requires full attention, there is no stopping, and there are no breaks.
Every addition of glass becomes another problem to solve: timing, heat, and shape all factor
into the end result. The smallest of details must be taken into consideration; overlook one
and the work is ruined.
Currently Wojick is a production glassblower at The Henry Ford Museum, creating early
American historical reproductions. In addition, Wojick is an Adjunct Faculty member teaching
beginning glassblowing at the College for Creative Studies. He has worked in various studios
with some of the top artist throughout the country as well as maestros from Murano, Italy.

April Wagner grew up enjoying many summers on the sandy white beaches of Lake Michigan.
A natural artist, her interest in form, color and line were apparent since early childhood. Blessed
with understanding parents, April was encouraged to focus her education on the arts, exploring
music, dance, and many types of visual arts. Her talent allowed her to receive a scholarship to
Interlochen Arts Academy, an exclusive private high school for the arts, helping her get a jump
start on her career. She initially focused on ceramics and in college developed a passion for blowing
glass. April draws inspiration for her work from her other passions, landscaping and gardening.
April has been blowing glass for 19 years. She owns epiphany studios in Pontiac, Michigan, the
largest private hot glassblowing studio in the Midwest. Her work is shown in over 300 galleries
worldwide and is featured in numerous public, private, and corporate collections, including
GM, Pfizer, Inc., Strategic Staffing Solutions, The Townsend Hotel, Hyatt Maui Resort, and
The Four Seasons Resorts. One of April’s largest public projects was a commission for a

span of five years, Harlan Estate has produced four wines with perfect 100-point ratings from
Robert Parker. Parker says that Harlan wines possess all the elements of greatness — individuality,
power combined with elegance, extraordinary complexity, remarkable aging potential and
compelling richness without ponderousness.

Unique Wine Tasting Experience of Winner’s Choice
Donated by Fritz and Caren Hatton
Need a virtually impossible to duplicate tasting for up to 16 wine lovers? At the winning bidder’s
option and subject to mutual convenience, Arietta Proprietor Fritz Hatton will return to Michigan
(or any state in the U.S.) to lead the magnum tasting within one year of the auction. As an
alternative, the winning bidder may choose to invite up to seven guests to a tasting and lunch
hosted by Arietta in Napa Valley, also within a year of the date of the auction. Included in this lot,
Arietta offers two six-magnum vertical collections of its red wines: the flagship Arietta Red Wine
H. Block Hudson Vineyards 2004 through 2009, and the unique blend Arietta Red Wine Variation
One 2004 to 2009. Not easy to duplicate because there are less than three cases of some of these
wines remaining in the Arietta Library. These two Ariettas are among the most extraordinary
blends made in Napa. The H. Block is a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with the Franc dominant
in the wine. The Variation One is a unique (in the U.S.) blend of Syrah and Merlot. Both wines come
from grapes grown on the famous Hudson Ranch in Napa/Carneros, and were made by two of
Napa’s greatest winemakers: John Kongsgaard and Andy Erickson.

Founded in 1992 by Ann Colgin and her former husband Fred Schrader, Colgin Cellars produces
wines that are nothing short of sensational, classic cult wines highly sought after and delicious
drinking. Ann has a world-renowned reputation for California’s small-production, handcrafted
red wines, intensely endowed from exceptional hillside vineyards. Robert Parker gave the 1993
wine 95 points, calling it a superstar, outrageously rich and sumptuous, with cassis, blueberry,
black raspberry and toast. The 1995 merited 98 points from Parker, who said it comes close to
perfection and is awesomely concentrated and endowed, elegant and harmonious. Aromatics are
phenomenal, with blackberry, raspberry, blueberry, cassis, flowers and new oak, mirrored on the
palate. A powerful yet elegant wine, it is supple, opulent and long. The 1996, scoring 97 points is
rich and saturated, displaying the hallmark Colgin blueberry, smoke, flowers, Asian spice, smoke
and cassis, resembling a cassis/blueberry liqueur. Parker gave the 1997 Colgin 99 points, calling
it nearly perfect, profound, full, seamless, velvety and layered.
This is an amazing auction lot, instant wine cellar, offering 71 wines, including three magnums,
three half bottles and 65 bottles, from 13 premium wineries in five California wine regions,
spanning four decades. From Araujo, one of California’s greatest wineries, are four Sauvignon
Blancs, offering supple, spicy fruit and one Viognier, aromatic and seductively fruity, The
Chardonnays from Chalone in Monterey County are known for being rich, flavorful and complex.
Far Niente Chardonnays are concentrated, rich and bright, revealing ripe fruit. Mike Grgich’s
Chardonnay made at Chateau Montelena placed first in the famous Paris Tasting of 1976. His
Chardonnays are brilliantly crafted, elegant, rich and refined. Kistler Chardonnays are so
consistently excellent, complex and intricate that Steve Kistler is often referred to as the King
of California Chardonnay. Long’s Chardonnay sourced from Pritchard Hill, one of California’s
best vineyards, is sleek, elegant, polished and creamy. Ambassador Zellerbach founded Hanzell
to produce California-style red and white Burgundies and the result is a 40+ year string of superb
Chardonnays. Deep, rich, fruity and concentrated, the wines have proven to be very long-lived.
Another very ageworthy Chardonnay, produced by Mount Eden in the Santa Cruz Mountains,
is awesome, enormously rich, complex and intensely fruity. Peter Michael’s vineyard specific
Chardonnays, made from great mountain fruit, are powerful, elegant, creamy, finesseful and also
very ageworthy. The wines of Sine Qua Non, owned by former restaurateur Manfred Krankl and
his wife, Elaine, are exceptional and very rare. Mr. K Noble Man is 100% Chardonnay made from
botrytises fruit. The Backward and Forward and Tarantella are distinctive Rhone-style blends,
made from Roussanne, Viognier and Chardonnay. Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnays are intense, ripe,
concentrated, crisp and flinty, with a fine minerality. Stony Hill Chardonnays, deep, vibrant, pretty
and fruity, also age well. Chardonnays from Talbott in Monterey County are bold, rich, full, toasty
and consistently excellent.

Diamond Creek, California’s first Cabernet-only vineyard, is planted from Bordeaux rootstock
smuggled out of France by founder Al Brounstein. The incredibly fine, rare, long-lived wines
are attributable to crystal pure water, ideal microclimates and unique soil personality on
Diamond Mountain, and traditional winemaking. Diamond Creek wines are uncommonly rich and
age gracefully for years, gaining in complexity, like Bordeaux. The world-class Cabernets, sourced
from rough, rocky Napa Valley soil, all have distinct microclimates and soil types producing clearly
distinctive nuances in wines. Wine & Spirits Magazine calls Diamond Creek wines “comfort food
for kings,” expressed in the “rich language of grand cru Cabernet spoken with a Diamond Mountain
dialect.” Diamond Creek Vineyards is a Napa Valley legend. The wines are made for the long term,
and patience will reward as it is unforgivable to consume these wines too young. The 1999 Red Rock
Terrace is sleek, elegant and refined with ripe berry, plum and currant fruit, laced with tea, sage,
cedar and Earth. The Gravelly Meadow reveals bright red fruit, black currant, plum, tobacco,
wood and light spice, in a firm structure, with soft tannins. The Volcanic Hill is full-bodied, with
firm tannins wrapped around a core of minty currant and blackberry fruit, cassis, violets, smoke,
cherry, strawberry, cedar, herbal spice and tobacco. The longest-lived of the three wines, it is
still rich, intense and silky, aging gracefully.

Insignia, a Bordeaux-inspired blend, recognized as one of the world’s great wines and one
of California’s greatest wines, displays uncommon depth, concentration and complexity.
Joseph Phelps flagship wine, Insignia has a tremendous track record dating back to its debut
vintage of 1974. With the release of the 1974 vintage of Insignia in 1978, Phelps became the
first California winery to produce a blend of the traditional Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot,
Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grape varieties under their proprietary label. Insignia has
been the benchmark of this category for over 30 years, each vintage rating 90 or more points
by leading wine publications and critics. All of these wines are aging gracefully, proving that
California wine can age well. They could easily pass for older, classified Bordeaux in a blind
tasting. The blend is generally about 50% to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Merlot
and Cabernet Franc. The wines are mature, at or close to a peak but still holding and drinking
beautifully. They are structured, balanced and complex, silky, with sweet tannins, good acidity
and length. Aromas and flavors, delicate and elegant yet still attractive, hinting of red and black
fruit, mint, spice, leather, cedar, chocolate and mineral. This lot is an excellent opportunity to
taste the evolution of one of the world’s great wines.

del Bosco is the critically acclaimed, fifth largest producer of Tuscany’s Brunello di Montalcino.
While winemaking has occurred here for centuries, it was only for personal consumption until
the late 1950s. In 2004, Massimo Ferragamo, scion of the Florentine fashion dynasty, took
control as partner/developer of this venture, engaging renowned winemaker Niccolo d’Afflitto to
produce wines that are faithful to the land and the grapes. The winery is just a small part of the
vast Castiglion del Bosco estate in the region of Val d’Orcia. This 2004 Brunello, meriting 92 from
Wine Spectator, is big and juicy, with dark, fleshy fruit, chewy tannins and a long, powerful finish.
The wine, loaded with plum, strawberries, and raspberry jam, is full-bodied, balanced and
rounded, with notes of cedar, dried mushroom, earth, chocolate, mint, oak and leather.

Bill Harlan, winemaker Bob Levy, and consulting enologist Michel Rolland, have achieved
spectacular results in an amazingly short time. The Harlan Estate wine, a Bordeaux blend,

the bar for extremely rich, complex, very expensive and highly sought after California Cabernets.
Bill Harlan’s mission in founding his winery was to create a First Growth of California. Robert
Parker says that Harlan wines possess all the elements of greatness — individuality, power
combined with elegance, extraordinary complexity, remarkable aging potential and compelling
richness without ponderousness. The 2004 Harlan, awarded 98 points from Robert Parker,
is very aromatic, youthful, big, concentrated and structured, with high acids, tight tannins and
exceptional length. Aromas and flavors are blackberry tart, cedar, violets, truffles, licorice,
earth, mineral and spice. Despite the rich weight, the mouthfeel is velvety and silky. Delightful
now, it should be awesome given time, drinking beautifully until at least 2030.

Chateau Haut-Marbuzet, a Cru Bourgeois, has a reputation for being exotic and the 1985 is indeed
exotic, flashy and seductive, at a peak, but still delicious, with delicate fruit, spice and oak. Chateau
Meyney, a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, has produced some lovely wines. The 1989, rated 90 from
Robert Parker for its sensory overload, large-scaled, fat and intense, with massive flavors and
tannins, drinking well for another decade. The 1996 Meyney, also lovely, but in a soft, easygoing,
open style offering ripe, herbal-tinged currant flavor. Duhart-Milon, owned by the Rothschilds,
is an excellent wine and the fully mature 1985 is medium-bodied, elegant and stylish, with spicy
fruit and oak. Chateau Gloria, a Cru Bourgeois, is a fruit-driven, supple wine and the 1985 offers
high-class Claret, richly fruity and flavorful. Chateau Terrey-Gros-Cailloux, a Cru Bourgeois,
is aromatic, richly fruity, round, full-bodied and delicious. Chateau Poujeaux, a Cru Bourgeois,
is an attractive, long-lived, medium-bodied wine, that is round and concentrated, with good
fruit. The Sociando–Mallet, a Cru Bourgeois, rated 90 from Robert Parker for its sensational
concentration and balance, with a classic Medoc bouquet of rich, black currant, that is echoed
in the mouth, laced with spice, mineral and flowers. Chateau Grand Mayne, a Grand Cru Classe,
scored 92 from Robert Parker, for its purity and harmony and spicy, long, sweet finish, redolent
of black raspberry, mineral and toasty oak — a wine that should drink well for another few years.

The Bryant Family Vineyard situated high on Pritchard Hill is one of the great terroirs of Napa
Valley. The 2001 Cabernet, scoring 91 from Wine Spectator and 90 from Robert Parker, is ripe,
fleshy, full and concentrated, nuanced with cedary oak, leather and spice wrapped around a
supple core of currant and red cherry. Richly fruity and flavorful, this Napa cult wine is delicious,
highly sought after, with well-integrated acids and tannins, ending in a lingering, persistent finish.
Caymus Special Selection, their top-of-the-line Cabernet, debuted in 1975 when owner-founder
Charlie Wagner and his son, Chuck, chose their best barrels of Cabernet for the limited
production Special Selection, a 100% Cabernet bottling. Always highly rated, the wine is
classically proportioned, richly flavored, amazingly complex, deep, concentrated, full-bodied
and very long. The 1999 has an overlay of sweet, toasty new oak intermixed with blackberry,
currant, vanilla, chocolate and espresso. The 2000 is rich and full, with mouthcoating cherry,
raspberry, blackberry, anise, spice, cedar, currant, plum and mocha, with hints of herbs and
lead pencil.

often credited with starting the quality revolution in Italy as a result of his quest for worldwide
respectability and recognition of the brilliance of his wines. He was among the first to employ
radical viticultural and vinification techniques in Piedmont to produce single-vineyard wines
and to plant non-Piedmontese varietals. All of these wines scored in the low to mid-’90s and
are very ageworthy, capable of gracing your cellar for another decade or two. The Darmagi,
100% Cabernet Sauvignon, is rich and concentrated revealing pepper, herbs, cassis, blackberry,
plum and spice. The Conteisa, Nebbiolo grape, is elegant and finesseful, with sweet red fruit,
flowers, spice, coffee and oak. Sperss, the longest-lived wine of the group, is dark, brooding,
complex, well-balanced and long, displaying plum, red currant, menthol, graphite, licorice,
underbrush and oak. Costa Russi is masculine yet soft, rich and round, with cherry liqueur, laced
with mineral, plum, dark berry and toasted oak. Sori Tildin is delicate, aromatic, very nuanced
and long, featuring pure fruit of cherries, raspberries and blackberries, laced with flowers, spice,
mineral and menthol. The Sori San Lorenzo is seductive, racy, lovely and finesseful with fine
tannins and a fresh core and finish, offering berries, cedar, tobacco and spice.

Legendary Lafite
(1) 6 L 2006 Chateau Lafite Rothschild Pauillac
Donated by Van and Lori Conway and Conway MacKenzie
The 2006 Lafite reveals ethereal finesse, lacy tannins and intense, pure fruit while still being
delicate, silky and seductive, according to Robert Parker, who gave it 97 points. The elegant,
harmonious, multidimensional wine has an extraordinary perfume of coffee, spice, cedar, lead
pencil and black currant. Deep, textured, complex and balanced, with firm tannins, drink now or
wait awhile as cellaring will only enhance. This wine should age beautifully for up to three decades.
The 2005 Shafer Hillside Select displays a Bordeaux-like personality because of the vintage’s
cool growing season. The wine reveals sweet fruit and a gorgeous bouquet of underbrush, forest
floor, creme de cassis, lead pencil and toasty oak that carry through beautifully to the palate.
It is ripe, full-bodied, deep, well-balanced, weighty, complex and rich, approachable now but
should evolve 25+ years, according to Robert Parker who scored it 97 points. Shafer Vineyard’s
Cabernets, produced according to the philosophy of “let the fruit dictate the style,” are big,
bold, lush, beautifully textured, seamless and hedonistic, with truly ripe fruit delivering massive
flavors, with great color, concentration and extract. The winemaking team of John Shafer, his
son, Doug, and the brilliant Elias Fernandez has been in place for more than 25 years, nearly as
long as that of Chateau Montelena’s Jim and Bo Barrett. The Hillside Select, 100% Cabernet,
aged 34 months in 100% new oak, is, according to Robert Parker, “One of the most prodigious
and compelling Cabernets in the world.”

This lot is personally offered by Nicola Bulgari, Vice Chairman of the Bulgari Jewelry Co. He
offers this experience because of his passion for CCS and for General Motors. It includes a unique
and exclusive experience touring Rome with one of its expert historians. In addition, you will
visit via dei Condotti, the Flagship store of Bulgari. Elizabeth Taylor said that visiting the flagship
Bulgari store was a highlight of filming Cleopatra in Rome … and she visited often. Bulgari was
founded in 1881 and after 1910 became devoted to jewels with precious stones, designs influenced
by a Parisian style. Designs changed over the years, and by the ’60s Italy was the design center
of Europe, creating its own distinctive style, differentiating itself from Paris. A Bulgari jewel
became as recognizable as a Chanel suit. Nicola Bulgari has an unrivalled collection of cars.
His love affair with General Motors cars, especially Cadillacs and Buicks, began in his childhood.
His collection also includes La Salles, Packards, Oldsmobiles and Chevrolets, all fully functional
and driven frequently.

Celani Ardore – Passion for Good Food, Good Times,

(6) 750 ML 2005 Celani Family Vineyards Ardore Cabernet Sauvignon
Donated by Richard and Karen Brown
Yquem is one of the few luxury-priced wines that merits its stratospheric price tag. Renowned
for its incredible richness, opulence and longevity, Chateau d’Yquem is the King of Sauternes,
the world’s greatest sweet wine. At Yquem they proudly boast that only one glass of wine per
vine is produced, and it shows. For more than 200 years, the wine has scarcely faltered and never
come close to relinquishing its reputation as France’s finest sweet white wine. No other property
can match it on a consistent basis. All three of these wines merited scores in the 90s from leading
critics. The 1979 is lovely, elegant, creamy, smooth and beautifully balanced, seducing the palate
with tropical fruit, dried apricot, honey and spice, ending in a persistent finish. The 1990 Yquem
was given 99 points by Robert Parker, calling it an extraordinary effort, rich and fabulously superb,
a massive, layered, botrytis-tinged wine. It is elegant and finesseful, laced with honeyed tropical
fruit, peach, coconut, apricot and toasty oak, seamless, displaying remarkable harmony and purity,
drinking well until 2050+. The 1991 Yquem is beautifully made, offering a gorgeous nose of crème
brûlée, roasted coffee and honeyed pineapple, carrying through to the unctuously textured palate
and long, full, rich finish.

A Top-Notch Threesome – Wines of Aristocratic Elegance
Donated by Tom and Vicki Celani
(5) 750 ML 1983 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Rhone
Volcanic Hill, the longest-lived Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon, has been named one of the top
25 vineyards of the world. Volcanic Hill, so named for the volcanic ash in the soil, comprises eight
acres of a south-facing hillside vineyard, has the warmest microclimate of the Diamond Creek wines
and is the earthiest and most tannic. The 1999 vintage, aging gracefully, features ripe currant,
cherry, strawberry, caramel, cassis, cedar, violets and smoke. It is elegant, silky and full-bodied,
with great depth, complexity, richness and length.

(1) 1.5 L 1966 Chateau Gruaud-Larose Saint-Julien
(1) 750 ML 1980 Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion Pessac-Leognan
Donated by Comerica
The 1983 Chave Hermitage, scoring 93 from Robert Parker, shows a profound concentration of
ripe, smoky berry fruit, with Asian spices, red cherry, bacon, dried flowers and tobacco. Full-bodied,
with exceptional depth and length, the wine reveals a wealth of flavor intensity with a lovely aged,
integrated character and a silky texture. This wine should evolve beautifully until at least 2025.
The 1966 Gruaud-Larose resembles a big Pauillac, with a melange of earthy fruitiness, black
currant, cedar and spice, firm tannins and a long finish. Fully mature, the wine is still alive, rich
and drinking beautifully. The 1980 La Mission Haut-Brion, aging well, is still rich, of good quality,
charming, balanced and structured, with scents and tastes of cassis, tobacco, wet stone, spice,
cedar, oak, dark chocolate and sweet dried fruit.

Original Wood Box
Donated by Tom and Vicki Celani
Former Canadian investment banker Jayson Woodbridge’s goal has been to create a Right
Bank-style Cabernet, and it seems that he has done that. Robert Parker says his 100% Cabernet
Sauvignon wines taste like a Pomerol. Noted for his very hands-on winemaking, Woodbridge
works closely with his vineyard manager, John Barbour and winemaker, Philippe Melka, both
highly skilled. Robert Parker awarded the 2001 a score of 95. The second vintage from the
10-acre Kayli Morgan vineyard is lush, sweet, super ripe and smooth, with excellent balance
and concentration, big tannins and a very long finish. The wine is powerful, yet opulent, velvety
structured, with good acids and tannins, packed with black and red fruit, laced with toast,
spice, licorice, chocolate, mineral and oak.

Celani Family Vineyards, founded in 2005 by Tom and Vicki Celani, the 2005 Auction Chairs,
focuses on limited-production, high-quality wines from their estate vineyard and other southern
Napa vineyards. Their mission is to produce the finest wines in the valley, estate-bottled
wines that reflect their great tradition of enjoying life and their rich Italian heritage, wines
that celebrate the best of times. The Celani philosophy is to celebrate the good life with good
friends, good food and great wine. The 2005 Ardore, their prestige wine, translated as passion
in Italian, is smooth, rich and polished, fragrant and flavorful, packed with fruit, featuring spicy
oak, currant, black cherry and mixed berry, laced with herbs, cedar, nutmeg and Earth. The
wine is matured in fine French oak barrels where the lees are allowed to settle to the bottom
as the wine is filtered naturally by its own weight, and is never stripped of any of its fragrance
and flavor. The grapes used to create Ardore come from the most respected farms in the
Napa Valley. However, if all the grapes purchased for Ardore do not meet the high standards
of winemaker Mark Herold, they are not used. According to Tom Celani, “The best bottle
of Ardore I’ll ever have is an empty one.”

An Evening of Exceptional Indulgences
Located in the heart of the Russian River Valley, the original homestead at MacMurray Ranch,
settled over 150 years ago, was purchased in the 1940s by actor Fred MacMurray, who farmed
it for over 50 years. While the ranch looks much as it did 50 years ago, today it is surrounded by
one of the Russian River Valley’s most beautiful vineyards. Enjoy a special tour, a select tasting
of the wines, and a lunch for four at MacMurray Ranch, a property that is only open to the public
once a year. Built into the side of a picturesque hill atop Dry Creek Valley, Fritz Winery is a tall,
futuristic-looking structure, with three tiers enabling wines to be produced by employing full
gravity flow process thereby preserving the delicate nuances of the grapes. Fritz produces artisan,
handcrafted wines sourced from grapes grown in the Russian River and Dry Creek Valleys. Cool
temperatures, natural spring water, redwood groves and rich soil all combine to produce Fritz’s
award-winning wines. The VIP cave tour will show the benefits of harnessing gravity and offer
tasting of wines from barrel. Fritz’s robust, briary Estate Zinfandel is prized for its sweet, ripe
fruit (blackberry, red and black cherry), notes of pepper, anise and Earth, firm structure and fine
balance, with elegant tannins and a long finish. Next, enjoy a private visit and tasting experience
at Phelps Freestone Vineyards in western Sonoma. Purchased in 1999 by the Phelps family near
the hamlet of Freestone, an exciting new wine growing region, located between the town of
Sebastopol and the Pacific Ocean, they have about 100 acres, mostly planted to Pinot Noir, with
some Chardonnay. This lot includes a magnum of Joseph Phelps Insignia, recognized as one of the
world’s great wines for its uncommon depth, concentration and complexity. Joseph Phelps flagship
wine, Insignia has a tremendous track record dating back to its debut vintage of 1974. The 2008
Insignia, scoring 95 to 97 from Robert Parker, is a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit
Verdot and 4% Merlot. Cassis, blueberry, graphite, flowers, licorice, spice, eucalyptus and Earth
are abundant in the nose and on the palate, with dense, velvety tannins and a long, elegant finish.

Caymus Delivers the Goods
(1) 6 L 1997 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
(1) 1.5 L 1997 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Donated by Tom and Vicki Celani
Caymus Cabernet from California’s exceptional 1997 vintage is a great wine, aging gracefully,
nearly evolved, well-integrated, still vibrant, showing bold, sweet jammy red fruit. It is a
smooth, velvety, round, balanced wine that is delicious. This is classic Napa Cabernet, a blend
of 88% Cabernet, 10% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, with no evidence of decline, that is still
opulent, rich and full, redolent of ripe berry and cassis, with a lingering finish. Cabernet Sauvignon
is king at Caymus which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year as a Napa Valley icon. Few
wineries in the world can boast such an enviable record of consistent excellence as Caymus,
producing cassis-flavored, ripe, concentrated, rich, lavishly wooded Cabernets. Caymus leaves
the fruit to hang on the vine much longer than normal to develop suppleness, increase color,
soften tannins and produce a wider array of aromas and flavors, often resembling a Pichon Lalande.
Owner-founder Charlie Wagner, who was born and raised on this Rutherford estate, considers
Caymus to be California’s most consistent producer of great Cabernet. Given the winery’s superb
track record and the tremendous quality of their wines year after year, it is difficult to disagree.

began their own label. THE GRADE is a phrase taken from a Robert Louis Stevenson story about

Calling the 2007 wine a candidate for perfection and the finest Bryant Family Cabernet since 1997,
Robert Parker awarded the wine a score of 98+. It has a beautiful bouquet of blackberry, blueberry,
flowers, smoke and truffles that are echoed on the palate. The wine is profoundly concentrated,
silky, layered, balanced, deep and intense, with perfectly integrated tannin and wood. A wine for
the long term, it should age well for 20 to 30 years.
For class and pedigree, Harlan Estate Red oozes both. James Suckling gave the 2008 97 points
and Robert Parker gave it 96. The nose is gorgeous and so is the palate, packed with currants,
blackberries, mint, mineral, espresso, mocha, red berries, rose petals and spice. The wine is full,
complex, voluptuous and long, drinking well from now to 2028.

Made from the finest parcels at Shafer, their signature Cabernet, the Hillside Select, spends
nearly 32 months in 100% new oak. This is a wine that usually has 20 to 30 years of aging
potential. Shafer’s first Cabernet, produced in 1976, was an instant benchmark for top-quality
Napa Cabernet. Shafer Cabernets, produced according to the philosophy of “let the fruit dictate
the style,” are big, bold, lush, beautifully textured, seamless and hedonistic, with truly ripe
fruit delivering massive flavors, with great color, concentration and extract. Parker calls the
Hillside Select, 100% Cabernet, aged 34 months in 100% new oak, “One of the most prodigious
and compelling Cabernets in the world.” Awarded 92 points from Robert Parker, the 1990 Hillside
Select displays sweet scents of red and black fruit, spicy oak, roasted herbs, toast and vanilla
that jump from the glass. It is chewy, supple, rich, full, gorgeously proportioned and immensely
flavorful, with great fruit extract. Parker gave 94 points to the 1991 Hillside Select, calling it
a knockout Cab, with sweet black currant, vanilla, Earth, ripe, sweet fruit and integrated acids
and tannins. The wine is layered and multidimensional, with high flavor extraction and splendid
balance and concentration. Meriting 95 points from Robert Parker, the 1992 Hillside Select
has a complex aroma of mineral, cassis, cedar, chocolate and subtle herb that carry through
to the palate and long, lingering finish. It is full, silky, with layers of concentrated and highly
extracted fruit, great purity of fruit and wonderful balance. Parker gave the 1996 Hillside Select
98 points, calling it one of the vintage’s superstars, with super aromatics, immense body, great
fruit extraction, perfectly integrated acids, tannins and alcohol and an intense finish. Packed
with cassis, cedar, chocolate, spicy oak and vanilla, the wine drinks beautifully now but will
continue to do so for over two decades.

This lot is a great opportunity to taste a number of California’s mature Cabernets all of which
are still alive, with attractive fruit and inviting flavor. Founder Georges de Latour’s personal
vision of unrelenting excellence is the inspiration for every vintage of Beaulieu Vineyard wine.
Legendary winemaker, Andre Tchelistcheff, the Russian-born, French-trained winemaster,
shaped the style of BV’s early wines and in the process helped establish Napa Valley’s reputation
for world-class Cabernet. Duckhorn’s tradition of quality and excellence continues as shown
in this classic Napa Valley Cabernet. Whitehall Lane produces a very good Napa Cabernet,
fruity and flavorful. Sequoia Grove Cabernets are complex and supple with fresh fruit and cedary
oak. Cuvaison Cabs are well-made, with ripe, focused, supple flavors. Joseph Phelps Cabernets
are solid performers, very ageworthy, dark, complex and concentrated, with layers of juicy, ripe
fruit and a rich aftertaste. The Madrona Cabernet features lovely fruit from high elevation hillside
vineyards. Gustave Niebaum’s Tench Vineyard Cabernet is firm and balanced, with pretty fruit,
plum, cherry, spice and vanilla.

I am not quite sure how I became a surrealist. My life has always been
stuffed with creative juices, but I can never pinpoint the true catalyst
of my surreal style. I have a wild imagination and love daydreaming
up unreal situations and alternative realities. Freedom is the final image
of a three-part series. In the first image the subject is tied ruthlessly
to a tree with dozens of gruesome hands clawing at her. In the second
image, a line of hands reach from along the bottom of the composition
up to the girl, who is rising away mystically above them. The resolution
to this narrative has been made with this image, displaying her freedom
from the hardships and struggles personified by the group of hands.
2012 Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Blanc Semillon
Cape Mentelle takes a minimal approach toward this classic Margaret River Blend. The aim is to
preserve as much fruit intensity and regional character as possible, while providing a full-flavored
distinctive white wine. The style accentuates the fresh fruit characters of both varieties with the
added complexity and palate weight offered by a small portion of barrel fermentation.
THE SEASON
The 2012 harvest in Margaret River was warm, dry and early and continues an excellent run
of recent vintages. Warm nights in February accelerated ripening, and Sauvignon Blanc was
harvested quickly in late February with abundant flavor and richness resulting in full-flavored
wines with great texture and refreshing acidity.
WINEMAKING
When harvesting Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon the emphasis is placed on capturing vibrant fresh
flavors with clean acidity. Fruit is harvested at night to take advantage of the cooler temperatures.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with around 15% of the blend fermented in a
combination of new and seasoned French Oak Barriques. The wine was assembled after four
months on lees and bottled in July 2012.
ANALYSIS

VINEYARD
The lion’s share of the fruit came from the cooler southern half of the region, including our
Chapman Brook Vineyard along with our other estate and selected contract vineyards. Various
canopy management methods are used, with the objective being to maximize fruit flavor
development. The typical soils of these vineyards are geologically ancient, free draining
sandy loams with a high percentage of lateritic gravel.
Chandon Brut Classic
2009 Numanthia-Termes
Philosophy
In keeping with the style we established more than 30 years ago, Chandon has captured
the expression of California’s vineyards in Brut Classic. Made using “méthode traditionnelle,”
this wine goes through second fermentation in the bottle and is made from the traditional
Champagne varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Our house signature style,
Chandon Brut Classic consistently displays apple and pear flavors and aromas with a hint
of spice that leads to a soft, dry finish. To ensure the continuity of style and quality that has
made Chandon one of America’s classic sparkling wines, our Brut Classic is blended with
10% to 20% Reserve wines from prior harvests.

2011 Terrazas Torrontés
ideal altitude
Terrazas grows grapes at the ideal elevation for each variety to achieve maximum flavor and aroma.
Selecting the correct altitude is essential for attaining optimal quality. Planting is done on “terraces”
at different elevations along the foothills of the Andes — hence the name, Terrazas de los Andes.
unspoiled nature
In the Andes, high-altitude vines are irrigated with melted snow while enjoying dry, warm days and
cool nights. Mountains shelter fields from storms and humidity, allowing vines to thrive in peace.

Bodegas Chandon Argentina, founded in 1959, was the first Moët & Chandon subsidiary outside

velvety, round and delicious entrance, then the sensation of volume on the palate grows even

about the wines
Winemaker Notes
The fruit was hand-picked very late according to flavor profile on the 17th and 31st of May. During
each pick two passes through the vineyard were carried out to separate the botrytised bunches.
All except a small portion of the grapes were botrytised. The non-botrytised grapes allowed us to
harness the fresh natural acidity of Riesling resulting in an average of 37° brix at picking in order
to extract the full flavor and richness of these grapes, a very long, overnight press cycle was used.
After pressing, each batch was fermented slowly over two months in small stainless steel tanks until
achieving the desired balance of sugar and acidity. It was then racked to old French oak barrels for
an eight-month maturation on yeast lees prior to being bottled in February 2008.
Moët Impérial
2008 Numanthia-Numanthia
The flagship of Moët & Chandon, Moët Impérial is the most accomplished and universal
expression of its style. It reflects the diversity and complementaries of the three champagne
grapes and the richness of the region’s best vineyards to reveal the magic of the world’s
most loved champagne.

Average altitude: 700 meters / 2,296 feet
Age: From 70 to 100 years.
Harvest: Exclusively manual with rigorous selection of the fruit in optimal
health and maturation at the vineyard and at the winery
Moët Impérial distinguishes itself by an exotic fruitiness, a generous palate and a confident
maturity, that continually seduce and delight.
Moët Impérial is an extremely accomplished assemblage of the most diverse selection of
crus in Champagne, with a predominance of Pinot Noir (45% to 50%), for intensity and
structure, elegantly complemented with Pinot Meunier (35% to 40%) and with Chardonnay
(10% to 20%) for freshness.
The use of 30% of carefully selected reserve wines completes the assemblage and enhances
its harmony, complexity and consistency.
The color is an elegant golden straw yellow with amber highlights.
Its aromas reveal an exotic fruitiness — yellow peach, plum, pineapple and honey — with floral
nuances (lime blossom) and elegant blond notes (brioche and fresh nuts).
Moët Impérial can be served as a prelude to dinner and all the way through to dessert. It is
perfect with sushi and dumplings, shellfish and fish in light sauces, poached, roasted, or lightly
sauced white meats, and fresh fruit salads that are not too sweet.

This poster is the result of an exploratory process in typography.
I began by recording many different sounds, and this piece in particular
stemmed from the sound of my car ignition. After analyzing the
audio samples, I started sketching using a variety of shapes and
letterforms. Sketches were refined in the computer and ultimately

used to generate CAD files, which were then laser cut and assembled
into two plates for printing on a letterpress. The final poster, a
two-color run shown here in metallic silver and blue ink on black
Canson paper, captures all of the emotion associated with the original
recording in an abstract statement using only typography.
