The myth goes that the furious giant Athos threw a massive rock against the sea
god Poseidon, but the rock fell under the eastern corner of the then two-fingered
Halkidiki peninsula. That is how the third finger of the peninsula came to be, since then
bearing the name of the giant.
When Virgin Mary visited Athos, she was so impressed by the beaty of the penninsula
that she asked God to let her take Athos under her protection. From then on Athos is
called "The Garden of Virgin Mary" and "Agion Oros" (Holy Mountain).
The climate is typically Mediterranean. The winter is mild with little snow and
temperatures that very seldom reach lower than - C. To this contributes the sea
breeze, which blows incessantly at Metohi Chromitsa and in conjunction with the
altitude (-m), the slope and soil composition helps the implementation of
organic farming. In spring and summer there is sunshine with few rainfall and high
temperatures, above  C. The vineyards spread on the slopes of Mount Athos with
southeastern exposure to the sun, forming picturesque benches with gradual slope in
altitude of - meters. The soil is mostly sandy, which allows its good drainage and
helps the vine roots penetrate deep into the subsoil. The later is rich in minerals - its
composition guarantees grapevines that will give wines with fruity aromas and rich
flavor. The entire vineyard of Tsantali in Metohi Chromitsa is cultivated according to the
principles of organic farming. The fertilization is made only with tsipouro and vostrihus
from the same vineyards and organic manure.

he vineyards that lie on the slopes of the Macedonian mountains and the sunny
coastline continue to produce famous wines. We measure four areas of VQPRD:
Naousa, Goumenissa, Amyntaio, Playes Melitona and eight Regional Wines: Makedonian,
Ayioritikos, Epanomitikos, Mesimvriotikos, Siatistinos, Dramas, Pageoritikos, Grevenon
and Playes Vertisku.
On Chalkidiki's peninsula the viticulture is limited to the middle finger, Sithonia, and the
eastern, that of Mount Athos.
In Sithonia, in sunny and picturesque beaches, are located the relatively young
vineyards of PORTO CARRAS. At - meters above sea Greek and French grape
varieties are cultivated, such as the white varieties Athiri, Roditis and Assyrtiko and the
red ones Limnio, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
In the peninsula of Athos, the white variety Roditis is cultivated, as well as the red
varieties Limnio, Cranache Rouge and Xynomavro.
However, the most famous area of wine production in Macedonia is whithout a doubt
Naousa, at an altitude from  reaching up to  meters.
The main vineyard variety is Xynomavro, known for its dry and intense red wines.

ere the wine is cultivated near the sea or on mountain slopes in areas outside
the Thessalian plain. There are two VQPRD, Rapsani and Anchialos and three local
wines, Thessalikos, Tirnavou and Kraniotikos.
Just before the valley of Tempi and next to Mount Ossa, are the Rapsani vineyards. The
red varieties Xinomavro, Stavroto and Krassato are cultivated at an altitude of  to 
meters. The wine is rich, vivid red, with a fine delicate bouquet.
But the majority of vineyards lie at the Thessalian Tyrnavo. The varieties of Savatiano,
Roditis, Batiki and Moschato Amvourgou are cultivated in these lowland areas with
northeastern exposure. A series of table wines is produced from the Moschato
Amvourgou, the Savatiano, the Rosaki and the Black Mesenikola.
South of the port of Volos, lie the vineyards of Anchialos.
At  to  meters above sea the variety Roditis gives a white wine, which is
particularly pleasant when drunk fresh.

In
the eastern regions, which are influenced by the Aegean Sea, such as Viotia,
Attiki and Evoia, the Savatiano and Roditis are cultivated to produce large quantities
of Retsina (First Name in Greek Tradition) and a wide range of table wines.
In very recent years, however, several Greek and foreign varieties, such as Assyrtiko,
Ugni Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon, have begun to be cultivated with remarkable
results.

eloponnese, the island of Pelops, is the largest wine producing region of
Greece. The high mountains which divide the province into several small areas and many
commercial reasons have limited the viticulture, with few exceptions, mainly in the
north.
We count five VQPRD: Nemea, Mantineia, Moschato of Patras, Mavrodafni of Patras,
Moschato of Rio Patras and six Regional Wines: Peloponnesiakos, Messeniakos,
Playies Orinis Korinthias, Pylias, Trifyllias, Playies Petrotou).
In Arkadia, east of Tripolis, lie the vineyards of Mantineia. At a headland of about 
meters are cultivated the white varieties Moschofilero and Asproudes, giving one of the
most delicate Greek white wine.
Achaia, the most famous wine producing province of Peloponnese, is known for its
pleasant dry white and red wines as well as for its sweet aged red wines with unique
character. In Achaia's vineyards are cultivated famed varieties, such as Roditis on the
slopes of Eyialia, Mavri Korinthiaki, Mavrodafni and White Moschato.

oday, six islands (Samos, Limnos, Santorini, Paros, Rhodes, Crete) produce VQPRD
wines.
The mountainous island Samos provides the ideal environment for farming. On the
slopes of its two mountains, on terraces starting from the sea surface and reaching up to
 meters, the variety of the aromatic white Moschato is cultivated. The reputation of
this rich, soft golden sweet wine goes beyond the borders of Greece.
Crete, the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean, produces the  /  of the Greek wines.
The vineyards are concentrated in the north central part of the island, around Heraklion,
Archanes, Peza, Dafnes as well as Siteia, in the eastern part of the island.
Indigenous varieties, such as the white Vilana, are cultivated beside the foreign varieties
Syrah, Carignan, Sylvaner, Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc.
In Santorini, an island famous for its unique wild beauty, in soil that is covered by
successive layers of ash, pumice and lava after the eruption of the vulcano, is cultivated
the white, dynamic Assyrtiko as well as the varieties Athiri, Aidani and Mantilaria.
We continue our tour in the Ionian Sea. Almost all the Ionian Islands grow vine crops but
only in Kefalonia are produced VQPRD wines.
In Zakynthos the Verdea is produced, a Appellation Traditionelle wine, from different
white varieties, while in Lefkada dominates the red variety Vertzami.
Kefallonia owns however its reputation for wines on the one hand to the white,
harmonic dry wine Robola which is produced by the homonymous grape variety, and on
the other to the sweet white and red wines, from the white Moschato to Mavrodafni
respectively.
