From the Pastor
Dear St. Paul’s UMC family,
Beginning the first Sunday of September, I started a sermon series on the purpose of the church, and how we can be
part of the dream that God has for our church. The Bible
says, “Where there is no vision the people perish.” The
church must be mobilized with a compelling vision, a sense of mission and purpose that motivates, energizes, and unifies. Without vision, the church ultimately reflects the hopelessness and despair of the world around it.
Let me tell you a little bit about my vision for our church. It is rather simple, it looks like the cross. It is two dimensional. For someone who is very visual, I see the two lines of the cross giving us the vision. One is the vertical line
that calls us and binds us to God through the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ.
I envision a church that is growing in the knowledge and experience of
Jesus Christ. I envision a people who yearn to grow as true disciples. And
because of our vertical relationship with God, I envision a community of faith
that can’t help but reach out our arms and become the horizontal piece that completes the cross.
I envision a faith community gathering with a sense of excitement and anticipation to worship the living God. I envision a body of believers where every
person is actively involved in ministry using his or her gifts for the work of
building God’s kingdom. I envision this church as a place where people know
they can come to find answers to their questions, help for their problems, healing
for their pain, forgiveness for their sin, and hope for their future. I envision our
church as a body of believers who don’t wait for people to come to us but instead go into our community and our world to carry the good news of Jesus
Christ.
The vision that I have is that our church would resemble a lighthouse.
Reaching up to God and reaching out to a darkened world as a beacon to reflect
the light of Jesus Christ. This is a demonstration of personal holiness reaching
out to social holiness.
Our church will be holding a mission and program planning retreat on Saturday October 26, 2013. Would you take a moment to schedule this date so that
you may take part in this important time together as we learn to seek God’s will
for us?
When Helen Keller was asked, “What would be worse than being born
blind?” She replied, “To have sight without vision.” We are the body of Christ
with sight. We are the body of Christ with the ability to see and seek God’s plan
for our church. Let us together be the mobilized church that is faithful to the
mandate to make disciples for the transformation of the world.
In Ministry Together, Rev. Anna Lee Mulford

To My Church Family,
There are no words to
tell you how much I appreciate
your love and care showered on me
while I was so ill.
You sent me cards when I was
too weak to go to the mailbox, offered food when I couldn't keep it
down, send flowers when I was too
sick to appreciate their beauty,
prayed for me when I was too sick to
pray for myself, called on the phone
when I fell asleep trying to talk to
you.
And
precious
LoWaine sending me updates on
what was going on at Church. I
missed so much Church I couldn't
wait to get back.
Thanks to all of you for your concerted effort to get me back in my
place. Joyce Clark
TUTORING CENTER
NEWS
Hallelujah! We are open and back
in business.
The first day we
opened, twelve students came in.
They were so thrilled to be back, as
were the parents. I really feel for the
parents, because of their language
barrier, they cannot help their children. We are a godsend for them.
The fact that the children love to
come is a miracle.
Again, we are looking for tutors.
Most of our tutors are retired teachers, although Nelle and Mary have
been with us for years and are not.
Retired teachers tend to travel, go
see grandchildren, go on cruises, and
are not always around. So, we are
always in need. If you have a couple
of hours a week to give, come on
over and join us.

LIVE NATIVITY………
MEMBERSHIP CLASS
The Worship Committee is sponsoring a Live Nativity in front of our church on
Saturday, December 21 from 5 to 7 PM. This is a way of outreach to our community.
For those interested in joining or inquiring about joining St. Paul’s, the Membership Class will be held Saturday October 12 and October 19 from 10:00 to
11:30.
You need only to attend
one. Please contact the church office or
Reverend Anna about your desire.
For us to accomplish this endeavor we need
your help. We need people willing to setup
and dismantle the set. We also need people
to be a part of the nativity, Mary, Joseph,
Shepherds, Angels, Wise Men, animals etc.
We want singers to sing Christmas Carols.
We would like to serve cookies, coffee and
hot chocolate. We will need people to provide cookies and help serve.
Lord, take me where you want me to go;
Let me meet who you want me to meet;
Tell me what you want me to say,
and keep me out of your way.
We want the people of our community to
know that we are here for them. Please
contact Karen Doty at [email protected] or
805-766-7968 or let Rev. Anna know of your willingness to help.

FROM THE PERMANENT ENDOWMENT COMMITTEE
Sue Odgers, Chair
This is an update from the Permanent Endowment Committee. The committee has received three grant requests in the
last month. All of them were granted by the committee and were taken to Church Council to ratify the action of Endowment Committee. The following grants will be funded.
1. A grant, not to exceed $10,000, will pay for the work needed to become compliant with ADA regulations. This is
a State requirement when work is done on an existing commercial property. The work now in progress is the replacement of the wooden posts around the quad area and the parking lot. The ADA work will involve new handicapped
signs in the parking lot, restriping the handicap parking stalls, and the placement of domes along the parking lot for
the visually impaired.
2. A grant $200 for a facilitator for the all church retreat which will be held on October 26th.
3.A grant, not to exceed $700, which will allow Faith Altobano to attend a young adult conference geared for those
who are interested in joining the ordained ministry. The conference will be held in Denver in November. A report
about the conference will be given to the congregation upon Faith’s return.
Some of the other projects realized from this Fund are as follows:
 the hearing aid system
 Interfaith House - Habit for Humanity
 Upgrading the computers
 Tutoring center
 Materials for the Christian Education committee
 Windows replacement in the sanctuary
 Seed money to hire a youth director
 A grant to the Trustees to paint the C Street rental property
If you have questions about the Permanent Endowment Fund, don’t hesitate to ask me or any of the committee members: Erbie Daw, Earl Gaviola, Lynn Hernandez, Mary Mangham, Avram Nunag, Mary Reagan, George Sims and
David Tuazon. Frank Maxim is also a member, as Lay Leader.
