October 2012 - Immanuel Lutheran Church
THE October 2012 Immanuel Lutheran Brothers and Sisters in Christ I have been asked many times about what happens after death. Do we go straight to heaven or do we wait in some kind of limbo until Christ returns. There is something about the unknown that makes us uneasy even if we do believe in God and are confident that we will be going to heaven. With All Saints Sunday coming quickly, I would like to address this by sharing a story with you that I have shared in church and some funerals. My home pastor developed a very aggressive brain cancer and fought it for quite a while. Before he died, his oldest daughter developed the same cancer during her pregnancy. Pastor lived long enough to see his grandson and Kristy continued to fight her cancer. During her last summer of life, her sister started having the same symptoms during her pregnancy and so they started testing her as well. Kristy ended up going to a hospice home where she was predicting deaths because she was seeing the angels going to the various rooms. While she was there, she never missed a death. Her dad came to her and told her that Carmen did not have the cancer and after Kristy died, Carmen’s tests came back negative. A hospice nurse who had died in Kristy’s room the previous year came to Kristy and asked her to thank the staff who took care of her and to tell them that she was ok. Kristy was even able to give this nurse’s name whom she had never met before. Immanuel Lutheran Church 255 South Seventh Street, Salina, KS 67401 785.825.4750 www.immanuelsalina.org Rev. Kent Happel, Pastor, Mindy Tillberg, AIM, Youth Director Before this happened to my home church family, I could not answer the question on when do we go to heaven because I didn’t know. I always believed that we went directly to heaven but never had proof. For me, this is proof. Those who believe go directly to God’s heavenly kingdom after death. Based on this response, some question the judging of the living and the dead. Again, I do not have an answer that is 100% sure, but this is -2- what I believe. I think the judging of the dead is in reference to those who have died before Christ rose from the dead. They will be judged based on their actions and belief in God since they did not have an opportunity to believe in Christ. As far as the judging of the living, that is in reference to those who have not yet died. NOTES FROM SEPT. 10TH MEETING Whatever it is that makes us uneasy about death, there is one thing I can promise: you do not have to go through it by yourself. You will be surrounded by angels and Christ Jesus is in charge. Our loved ones who have gone before us were not left alone either because God was with them every step of the way. In Christ, Pastor Kent Pastor’s Report: Helped with Hot Times. Met with 2 couples on weddings. Preached at Bethany Home on August 22nd. Attended council retreat. Had 3 meetings outside of Ministry Teams. Covered for Pastor Ethan Feistner. Visited with one shut-in. Visited with 4 members who were hospitalized. It would be to sell pasta to raise funds for meal preparation and christmas boxes. Please make note of the Prayer Ventures for October You can find them at http://www.elca.org/What-WeBelieve/Prayer-Center/Prayer-Ventures-2.aspx. A sample of the first three days is printed here. A printed version of the entire month of October is available at church. These petitions are offered as guides to prayer for the global, social and outreach ministries of the church. Thank you for your continued prayers for the life and mission of this church. 1 Pray for those still dealing with the devastation of Hurricane Isaac, which brought death and destruction to Haiti and then the Gulf Coast, including the Southeastern and Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast synods. 2 Pray for Rachel Eskesen, a new ELCA missionary who is serving in Bratislava, Slovakia, as a seminary intern at Bratislava International Church and a religion teacher at Evanjelicke Lyceum. 3 Remember in your prayers those who suffer from depression and are at risk of suicide, including the many young people who feel they have no future, that they will feel the healing grace of God. -3- Worship and Music Ministry Team: Pastor will continue to offer video/discussion classes between services. A total of $1,598.00 was raised. Money has been sent to Thrivent for them to distribute between Red Cross and Russian Far East. Handing out flyers/suckers at parade was a success. Radio advertising and live remote worked well. We need more room for the car show as we are getting more cars. Looking ahead, there will be an emphasis next year on ELCA missionary’s support and World Hunger. Evangelism: Are working on the young adults get together. There will be a fish fry October 13 after the Rummage Sale. Finance: Anyone that does not have their budget requests in need to do it now. Amendments to the Constitution In the September newsletter you received a copy of the amendments to the Model Constitution for Congregations as approved by the 2011 Churchwide Assembly. There were two blanks that should have been filled in. Under section *C7.03. it should read Central States in the blank and in section *C17.04. it should read 25 in the blank. Also as there were no changes made by the council to the proposal, it will only take one vote instead of two. And in addition, the council recommends approval of the amendments to the constitution as lined out in the 2011 Churchwide Assembly proposal. -5- “… for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I sing for joy.” Psalm 63:7 PRAYER FOCUS FOR OCTOBER October 1st-6th: Continue to pray for rain so that the land may be replenished. As the farmers work the fields, pray that they have a safe planting season. October 7th-13th: Continue to lift up our education opportunities from the youth through adulthood that those who participate may grow in their relationship with God. October 14th-20th: Give thanks for all who serve in the military and pray that they may return safely to their homes and families. October 21st-31st: Give thanks for all who work to make the church better where all are welcome are able to experience God in their lives. Please keep in your prayers the families and friends of those Immanuel members and/or loved ones who have recently died. Elsie Veatch Spangler August 31, 2012 A prayer when challenged God of wisdom and love, help me and all others who are struggling with difficult circumstances find direction and strength to face our challenges. Give us the assurance that underneath us are your everlasting arms, which will sustain us through everything we face day and night. In Jesus’ name. Amen. -6- Those In Need of Prayer Sick Gerry Allie Bonnie Allie Harry Anderson Dale Armbruster Ray Baker Leona Cahoon Bud Coburn Linda Crosby John Deming Edwin Dent Jr. Vera Eklund Mary Endsley Myrtle Falk, Velma Farr Rosanna Fredrickson Wanda Funk Jon Grahn Sheri Graham Derek Gropp Eunice Gunzelman Edith Heidrick Del Herbel Tyler Hughes Phillip Humbargar Joyce Johnson Wayne Koetkemeyer Gayle Kuespert Mary Laas Marie Lowe Margaret Mauch Rex McKinney Sheryl McKinney Darby Miller Susan Ottley Veda Pihl Ruby Pilgram Elda Jean Richards Loretta Saunders Eric Scheier Katherine Schneeman Jim Swedlund Marilyn Swenson Angie Sundell Marlene Tustin Lois Webb Mick Wodke Virgil Yost Military Mary Almquist Chris Bowman Ryan Cassette Andrew Chung Diana Colon Matthew Deneke Troy Forrester Pastor Steve Pera John Rogers Eric Scheier Brandie Schneider Christopher Schutt Jason Shipp Scott Sippel Mark Tillberg Ben Youngquist Grieving Joyce Bunting & Family John Carson & Family Vera Eklund & Family Lee Grahn & Family Clara Herbel & Family Harvey Holmgren & Family Phillip Humbargar & Family Ralph Johnson & Family Bernie Kubitschek & Family Pam Michel & Family Barbara Nelson & Family Jessie Peterson & Family Mildred Rittger & Family Gregg Solberg & Family Dolly Wilson & Family Family & friends of Elaine Almquist Family & friends of Audrey Isaacson Family & friends of Grace Johnson Family & friends of Edna Kruckenberg Family & friends of Janet Meyer Family & friends of Elsie Spangler Family & friends of Erma Swenson Family & Friends of Dorothy VanCleef -7- “I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord!” Psalm 122:1 Average September (8:30) ............................ 41 Average September (11:00) .......................... 60 Visitors to Immanuel in September Deanne Mowrer, Woodlawn, IL; Rev. Reformation Reformation Sunday is October 28th. When Martin Luther challenged the Roman Catholic Church, he was not planning on starting a new church. In fact, he wanted to make the Catholic Church better and more faithful, at least in his eyes, to God. The work that he began dramatically changed the way in which people experienced God. In recognition of the Reformation, you are invited to wear red. Join us as we look at some of the issues that brought about the reformation for the church. All Saints This year, All Saints Sunday will be on November 4th and it is a day in which we remember and honor those who have gone before us. As we prepare for this day, there will be lists in the Narthex and Chapel areas for you to add the names of your loved ones. We will be contacting the families of loved ones who have died over the past year and who were buried by pastor. During the service, as each name is read, a family member or somebody from the congregation will come forward and take a candle off the table and place it on the altar. If you forget to give us your loved one’s name, there will be an opportunity to do so during the service. -8- “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope.” Romans 15:4 Pastor’s Video Discussion Class Pastor’s video discussion class meets on Sunday mornings beginning at 10 am. We watch a short video and then discuss it. Below is a list of each week’s discussion topic and a brief description. Oct 7th: Corner Why is it that often when we get what we want, we still feel empty? We work so hard to succeed, but our lives just end up becoming more about us. Can we get caught up in a smaller world where our lives are all about the things that we want? Or is there another way to live where life is about more than just us? Oct 14th: Noise Why is silence so hard to deal with? Why is so much easier for us to live our lives with a lot of things going on all the time than to just be in silence. We’re constantly surrounded with “voices” that are influencing us on how to think, feel, and behave. There’s always something going on. Always noise in our lives. But maybe there’s a connection between the amount of noise in our lives and our inability to hear God. Oct 28th: Whirlwind A lot of us have gone through times in our lives that are difficult. Some have been small and hard to understand and some have been big and overwhelming. During these times, we want to know why. Why do we have to suffer? Why do bad things happen to good people? But we don’t always get the answers. Sometimes we are left wondering. 3rd Grade Bible Presentation As part of our Affirmation of Baptism ministry, we give our 3rd grade students Bibles on Reformation Sunday, October 28. These Bibles are written for young readers and are the New International Readers Version. If you have a 3rd grader who would like to receive a Bible, please contact Mindy at [email protected] or 825-4750. BIBLE QUIZ Where was Daniel living when officials of King Darius conspired to have Daniel thrown into the lions’ den? Why was Daniel living there? A. Egypt; he wanted to see the pyramids built by his ancestors, the Hebrew slaves B. Jerusalem; he was serving as a priest in the temple C. Samaria; he was visiting his friend Micah D. Babylon; he was one of the Israelites who’d been taken into exile there Answer: D (See Daniel 1:1-6 and 6:13.) 21st: Luggage Oct Maybe a friend turned their back on you. Maybe someone you loved betrayed you. We all have wounds and we end up carrying around these things that people have done to us for weeks, months, and sometimes even years. It isn’t always easy to forgive these people and after a while these hurts can get really heavy. After a while, we may try to get revenge to help us feel better, but does that really satisfy? Maybe forgiving isn’t something you do for somebody else, maybe it is something you do for you. -9- Why it's the 'Good' Book The whole of the inspiration of our civilization springs from the teachings of Christ and the lessons of the Prophets. To read the Bible for these fundamentals is a necessity of American life. -Herbert Hoover -10- October 7, 14, 21 & 28 “He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8 Sunday School Teachers Needed We still need a few volunteers to help with the Preschool/Kindergarten and Middle/High school classes! This month I was to update you on some of our projects that we have ongoing in our Parish Health Team. The Fitness Center will be open for business starting in October! I will have it open at the fish fry for everyone to take a look and get forms to fill out in order to participate. To start with I will have individual orientations and as we grow we can have group orientations. I am looking for a few individuals that might be able to assist me in this endeavor. I am excited to be able to offer fitness equipment that is exceptional. Many thanks to those of you who helped make this work! In November we (Parish Health Ministry Team) will again be selling pasta in many shapes and sizes. These are great for gifts or just enjoying at home. Many of you may not know that our meals and our cheer bags (everything except education and fitness center expenses) come from our own account and not the budgeted account that you as the church provides. We have been good stewards of this account and hope you will continue to support our fundraising in order to provide meals to those in need. Oct 3 ~ Chili ($3/person) Oct 10 ~ Chicken & Noodles ($3/person) Oct 17 ~ Fried Chicken ($4/person) Oct 24 ~ Spaghetti ($3/person) In December we will do caroling and food boxes, but in addition we will have the cheer bags that we started last year. These bags go out to those who for whatever reason can’t always be with us every Sunday-due to illness, health issues, or so many other reasons. This year we will make up the cheer bags and we will put a name and address on them and hope to have our Immanuel family (that means you and me..) pick a bag or two, go out to their house or apartment/ nursing home and visit a bit and deliver the bag and wish them a very merry Christmas. I know this time of the year is so busy, but I think we all need to take a moment to slow down and think of others as well. -15- -16- Dinner Confirmation Class (7th & 8th graders) Choir Be watching for the date of our Soup supper! We provide many opportunities to share your gifts at Immanuel. Some examples are teaching, ushering, service projects, reading the lessons, serving on a ministry team or council, and help provide meals for the sick or grieving. All are important and are blessed by the Lord. Included in this newsletter is the “My Gifts to Share for 2013” booklet. Take time to read it, pray about which gifts you would like to share and return the completed booklet October 14th. We plan to dedicate all the booklets at both services on October 14th. Four Wonders Pre-Kindergarten Fundraiser We will have a fundraiser for Four Wonders the month of October. The coffee will be part of the Lutheran World Relief Coffee Project. This is the coffee we enjoy on Sunday mornings and other occasions. We will have four kinds of coffee – Fellowship Blend, Fellowship Blend Decaf., Hazelnut Crème and French Vanilla. Each bag is $12.00. You may purchase the coffee from me or a student between services and after the 2nd service on Sunday mornings. Or you may use the order form on the following page. All orders must be placed by Wednesday, October 31. This coffee would make a good gift for Christmas. We hope to raise a good amount of money for the children here in Salina that need help to attend school. Thanking you I advance. Carolyn Larson Four Wonders Director & Teacher -20- Lutheran World Relief Coffee Project Love Your Coffee and Your Neighbor, Too Coffee is big business. But sadly, it is often an unjust business. A lot of coffee is grown by small-scale farmers in poor, isolated regions. In conventional trade, middlemen often force them to accept low prices that don’t even cover their production costs let alone basic living expenses. The more conventionally-traded coffee and tea we buy, the more we perpetuate this unjust way of doing business. With Fair Trade, however, farmers get a fair price while coffee drinkers like us enjoy a gourmet product for about the same price as conventionally traded varieties. Through the project, farmers earn a fair price for their products, have access to affordable credit, and gain a long-term trading partner they can trust, a Fair Trade Organization called Equal Exchange. With your support, these communities invest in education, health care, and agricultural improvements. In addition, for each pound of coffee Lutheran churches buy through the project, Equal Exchange makes a contribution to the LWR “Small Farmer Fund” for projects supporting small farmers and their families. Fellowship Blend (1 lb. bag) $12.00 each A smooth and full-bodied coffee. Fellowship Bled Decaf (1 lb. bag) $12.00 each Full-bodied and well-balanced with a rich, smooth flavor. Naturally decaffeinated, this coffee is grown by indigenous co-operatives in the mountains of Colombia. Hazelnut Crème (12oz. bag) $12.00 each This aromatic blend is mild and light with sweet hazelnut flavor. French Vanilla (12oz. bag) $12.00 each You’ll find yourself craving this smooth blend with vanilla bean flavor.
