With the Baptism of the Lord we mark the end of the Christmas season. Even though it may seem long ago that tree and the lights were taken down, gifts and the wrapping’s packed away, New Year’s resolutions made and broken, only now is Christmas ended. The Baptism of the Lord also marks the beginning of Ordinary Time as we enter into the normal rhythm of life, the ordered (numbered) weeks of the life of the Church. But this new time is anything but ordinary – which is why the Baptism of the Lord marks the onset, for it is in the Baptism of the Lord that Jesus’ mission begins and it is in the ordinary time of our lives that we are called into mission. With our own baptisms we became adopted children of God, we were incorporated into the body of Christ and we were given a share in the mission of the Church. As with Jesus, in our baptisms we heard God say ‘you are my beloved child, with you I am well pleased’, so, like Jesus, we also must live our lives as the beloved child of God we are. We know that in the ordinary time of his life Jesus was tempted, he felt the pressures and uncertainties of everyday life, he dealt with people who had difficulty understanding his intimate relationship with God, and with many who were more concerned about their own wellbeing and status than in the well-being of others. Yet through all of this Jesus never lost focus on the mission he had of making the love and mercy of God evident and real to all. In declaring the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy Pope Francis said “Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy. These words might well sum up the mystery of the Christian faith. Mercy has become living and visible in Jesus of Nazareth, reaching its culmination in him. The Father, “rich in mercy” (Eph 2:4)…slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness” (Ex 34:6), has never ceased to show, in various ways throughout history, his divine nature. In the “fullness of time” (Gal 4:4), when everything had been arranged according to his plan of salvation, he sent his only Son into the world, born of the Virgin Mary, to reveal his love for us in a definitive way. Whoever sees Jesus sees the Father (cf. Jn 14:9). Jesus of Nazareth, by his words, his actions, and his entire person reveals the mercy of God.” This too is our mission, to reveal the mercy of God in our lives. Our baptisms call us to proclaim the Gospel with our lives and Pope Francis has said that ‘Mercy is the beating heart of the Gospel’. Pope Francis reminds us that, if we are to proclaim the Gospel, we must contemplate this beating heart, the mystery of mercy, the wellspring of joy, serenity and peace. He goes on to say that mercy, this supreme act by which God comes to meet us, is the fundamental law that dwells in the heart of every person. Mercy is the bridge that connects us to God, which opens our hearts to the hope of being loved, despite our sinfulness, and allows us to look lovingly and sincerely into the eyes of those we meet on the path of life and see them as our brothers and sisters. At times we are called to look attentively on mercy so that we can become more effective signs of the mercy of God in our lives. In many ways the special times of the Church year (Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter) afford us the opportunity to gaze deeply into God’s mercy, but the Ordinary time of the year encourages us to be that effective sign. As we enter into this Ordinary Time let us consider how we will become signs of God’s mercy in our homes, our families, our daily lives. How can we more fully live the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy? How, for example, can I feed the hungry, visit the sick and the imprisoned, comfort the sorrowing, bear all things with patience, forgive always? Who in my life is hungry, sick, imprisoned? Who needs my comfort, patience, forgiveness? Where do I need to be more open to diversity, more consciously be in solidarity and promote the common good, strive more to protect all of creation? Entering this Ordinary Time of the Year these are just a few questions to reflect upon. How are you living out your Baptismal mission of solidarity in the Body of Christ? May this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy help us to know the mercy of God in our lives so that we may be ‘merciful as the Father is merciful’. Go forth in peace bringing God’s mercy to the world. Peace and Mercy, Dcn. Paz y Misericordia, Diácono Ed Page 4 The Baptism of the Lord January 10, 2016 “YEAR OF GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT” Aandftersupport almost ten years we are getting towards the end of paying off our debt for our beautiful church. With the help of every parishioner it is very possible that we can accomplish this goal with our Kingdom Campaign 2016. We will conclude our three year evangelical journey of looking for a more effective way to respond to God’s abundant blessings in our lives as a Church. The first year helped us to contemplate the gracious gift of life which we undeservedly receive from God. With the “Tree of Life,” we asked the Good Lord to give us the fullness of life here and hereafter (John 10:10). Last year we continued our journey with the “Tree of Love.” Life is meaningful when lived in love and when shared with others as God shared His life with us in Christ (John 3:16). THE TREE OF HOLINESS This third year in our spiritual journey to pay off our Church debt is enriched by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Bible reassures us that the Spirit gives life (John 6: 63). As you give to the Kingdom Campaign in this year of “God the Holy Spirit,” may the Spirit of the Lord grant increase and fruition in all your undertakings and may the power of the Holy Spirit regenerate and revitalize whatever seems to dry up in your life, health, prospects, and undertakings. Your giving to the Kingdom Campaign will offer you and your family the opportunity to be part of Sacred Heart history. You will be honored as one who generously contributed in building a house for God (2 Samuel 7: 5). When one gives up to $480 or more during this third year, “Year of God the Spirit”, his/her name or family name will be written on the “Tree of Holiness”, which shall be placed on one of the walls of the church. Please be part of this spiritual opportunity. Please take a minute today and complete your Kingdom Campaign pledge card. Pledge cards are in the pews at all of the masses and are available in the parish office. You can also take advantage of our Online Giving by looking for the link on the parish web page, www.sacredheartrc.org and make your pledge and sign up at the same time! Pope Francis has designated this year as the Holy Year of Mercy and to, “Be merciful as your Father is merciful,” as Jesus told his disciples in Luke 6:36. This year 2016 is an opportunity for spiritual conversion, recognizing how much God loves and cares for us. It is also a time to be merciful towards ourselves, reorienting our hearts to God so that we can be our best selves as we move forward in life. If you have emotional or spiritual wounds as a result of a past abortion, please consider attending our upcoming Rachel’s Vineyard weekend retreat February 5-7, 2016. These retreats are therapy of the soul, with Christ as our loving physician. It is an opportunity for women and men to experience the graces of this merciful, holy year and renew and rebuild hearts broken by abortion and life’s circumstances. Participation is strictly confidential. For more information, please contact Mary Huber at 909-475-5353 or [email protected] or visit the website Rachelsvineyard.org.
