We will have a special involvement and blessing for all our children who are preparing this year for First Holy Communion—the Sacrament of Unity. Because it is so important, we have decided to cancel the 10am and 11:30am Masses in church and have the Mass in the Park at 11:00am on September 21. One of many reasons is so the choir and others can join us. Come for faith, fun, fellowship, and our faith family! Celebrating our Countries of Origin (see Unity Day article next page) We’re again celebrating the many different countries in which Borromeo parishioners were born, as well as the countries our ancestors came from generations ago. We’ll begin the Unity Day Mass in the park with a procession in which one person from each country of origin or country of heritage carries a small lightweight flag and places it near the altar. We need a volunteer from every country for the flag procession. Please let Mary Harrison know very soon if you’d like to carry the flag for your country. Her contact information is [email protected] or her phone number is 636949-8268. Or, just drop an envelope marked “Unity Day” in the collection basket which contains your name, the country of your origin or cultural heritage, and your contact information. We are All One Family in our Lord Jesus Christ! Unity in Diversity “. . . The Church of the twenty-first century will be, as it has always been, a Church of many cultures, languages and tradi- tions, yet simultaneously one, as God is one—Father, Son and Holy Spirit—unity in diversity.” USCCB Let’s Celebrate our Heritage Our parish has members born in over 47 countries! The Parish Unity Committee would like to highlight your country of origin in the weeks leading up to Unity Day. If you were born outside of the U.S. and would like to share information about your native country please email or call Brenda at [email protected] or 636-219-6767. Pope Francis Speaks to our Hearts A Church Poor and for the Poor Some people wanted to know why the Bishop of Rome wished to be called Francis. Some thought of Francis Xavier, Francis de Sales, and also Francis of Assisi. I will tell you the story. During the election, I was seated next to the Archbishop Emeritus of São Paolo and Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for the Clergy, Cardinal Claudio Hummes, a good friend, a good friend! When things were looking dangerous, he encouraged me. And when the votes reached two-thirds, there was the usual applause, because the pope had been elected. And he gave me a hug and a kiss, and said, “Don’t forget the poor!” And those words came to me: the poor, the poor. Then, right away, thinking of the poor, I thought of Francis of Assisi. Then I thought of all the wars, as the votes were still being counted, till the end. Francis is also the man of peace. That is how the name came into my heart: Francis of Assisi. For me, he is the man of poverty, the man of peace, the man who loves and protects creation; these days we do not have a very good relationship with creation, do we? He is the man who gives us this spirit of peace, the poor man. . . . How I would like a Church which is poor and for the poor! Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Borromeo Family! Your Brother in Jesus, Father John We offer our prayerful sympathy to the family of James Tuhill, father of Joanie Stulce; and to Bernice Schuster on the death of her grandson Nathan Auerswald. May they, and all the faithful departed, rest in peace. 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 7, 2014 Let’s join together to celebrate Jesus drawing us together in Holy Communion and celebrate the cultural diversity that we are blessed with in our Parish Family. The main dish and water will be provided. Please bring your own lawn chairs, beverages and food to share. In the first step we are told to go one-on-one to the person and try to work out the problem. If that doesn’t work, we are to take some witnesses, or in the final case, bring the offender before representatives of the Church. If reconciliation does not occur in the end, there is nothing more we can do. Reconciling differences is one of the most challenging jobs of parenthood. When our children jump immediately to step three (we sometimes call it tattling), we need to remind them and guide them through the first steps. Our children need to see us model this as well. How often do we fly of the handle and accuse someone of wrongdoing rather than approach him/her rationally. When our children see us calmly, but firmly, address someone, naming the infraction and saying how the action made us feel, they learn that there are other ways besides hostile confrontation to work out differences. Do you know of a situation of where this 3-step formula will help you? Do you recall a time when it was hard for someone to correct you? Please pray for our loved ones who are hospitalized or ill, including: Steve Zimmerman, Amy Steiger, Bernie Boschert, Margaret Eastman, Connie Sebacher and for the intentions on our Borromeo Prayer Tree and in our Book of Prayers Homebound, Critically Ill or in the Hospital? If you are homebound and wish to receive the Eucharist, or receive a visit while in the hospital, please call Mary Kutchback at 946-9758 and the parish office at 946-1893. ******** UNITY DAY Directions to Bales-DuSable Park from Church: Go east from church to North Second, turn left. Stay on North Second .7 miles to Tecumseh, turn right. Turn left onto North Main, ending at the Park. Contributions for August 30/31 General Contributions: Loose: Matching Gifts: Total Contributions: Help A Student: $14,157.00 864.01 1,025.00 $16,046.01 $961.00 THANK YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need by the generosity you display when you share your Treasure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others. “You, son of man, I have appointed watchman for the house of Israel.” - Ezekiel 33:7 Many of us are generous with our gifts. However, how often is our generosity at the minimum level required? We do just enough or give just enough. Remember, the Lord calls us to be generous with all the gifts He has given us, to grow them and return them with increase. We pray that in gratitude for our gifts, we may grow them and give back with increase. Marriage in Christ has been promised between: Melissa Kathman and Stephen Graveman Kaitlin Travous and Kevin Gill 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 7, 2014 St. Charles Borromeo School Dear Parishioners, The problem of pointing out the sins of others is well illustrated in today’s Gospel. Jesus is quite specific about warning the sinner and the manner in which to do it. Now imagine teaching that lesson to little children! In many ways, it is easier for children to point out when someone else does something wrong than it is for adults. When everything is relative and every action is considered to be equal in the secular world, having absolutes like Commandments seems oldfashioned and out of touch. The school and PSR children are being taught that there are rules of morality that we live by. We find those rules in the Ten Commandments, the Great Commandment, and in the Sermon on the Mount. That is the basis for moral authority for Catholic Christians. By correcting with love, children can learn to make correct, well-reasoned choices based on Catholic beliefs. In addition, we teach how to make a good apology. Here are the three parts: 1. 2. 3. Saying sorry for what we did and naming it. Asking for forgiveness. Asking how we can make it better for the future. These three steps to a good apology are part of Virtue Based Restorative Discipline. Sound familiar? These same steps are what make a good confession as well. When we admit our mistakes and ask for forgiveness, something inside changes. We become more like Jesus and with His grace can build a better future for ourselves and those around us. I hope you will pray for all of us at St. Charles Borromeo who work in formation of young souls. Have a grace filled week! God bless. Mrs. Hoffman St. Charles Borromeo School is on Facebook! God bless you all!! 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 7, 2014 St. Charles Borromeo Religious Education Dear Parishioners: It is so good to see God at work in so many ways and people in our parish. Lifeline, Eucharistic Adoration, with Christian rock music, Christian message video and a witness of Jesus at work in one’s life occurs on the last Thursday of the month at 7pm in Church. I am so thankful for Audrey Van Leuven for sharing her experiences with us; for Mike Dreyer for his commitment and dedication to this devotion, to Chris Lightner and the band for leading us in music worship and for our deacons and priests who lead us in adoration and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament of Jesus. I’m also thankful for these parishioners who are working with our PSR Confirmation class to implement a new preparation program, meeting each week in the classroom as a small group leader, as a disciple of Jesus, sharing their faith and experiences: Mrs. Jen Bober Mr. Steve Cave Mrs. Marion Engelhorn Mr. Pat Glynn Erika Guerrero Mr. Larry Schneider Rachel Kitzmann Mrs. Christian Souter Audrey Van Leuven As member of our Catholic parish, we want to achieve greatness through small acts of love we do each day, and thus becoming the best person God calls us to be. At school and in PSR, our work supports the work you are doing at home to instill Catholic Christian values. It’s important to remember the old axiom: Actions speak louder than words. What we model by our actions shows our children what we truly value. Here are three things we can do to increase our parish membership and Mass attendance: 1. Cultivate Virtue: both in yourself and in others. 2. Commit to Being Constructive: thought, word and deed. 3. Tell Your Story: of the amazing changes that occur when you cultivate virtue! Important dates for you to add to your calendar: First Reconciliation: Parent meetings: we have planned two so that each parent can attend one meeting: ** Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at 7pm in the café ** Sunday, October 12, 2014 at 10am in church Celebration of the Sacrament of First Reconciliation: Thursday, December 4, 2014, 7pm in church Confirmation: Regional Kick Off Rally, Saturday, September 20, 1pm to 5pm at Duchesne High School. SCB Students and Parents… Here’s a chance to share a fun event together while raising awareness for our kids about the plight of the poor and underserved living right here in our community. Please join members from the St. Vincent de Paul Society from all over St. Charles County in our 2014 Friends of the Poor Walk on September 20, 2014 at Quail Ridge Park in Wentzville. There are lots of reasons you should walk with us: The park is lovely and you and your family and friends can make a day of it The walk is only a mile around a lovely pond and you can do it together (bring your pets too!!) We’ll provide drinks and snacks You’ll be able to have a discussion with your kids about neighbors and community members that may be less fortunate and could use a little help You’ll be an important part of a national initiative – this walk is occurring on this same day in parks all across the country Every penny we raise by supporting our walkers stays right here in our parish to help our neighbors in need Sign up to walk forms are available in the church narthex and at school. Support your student in his/her walk. Walk with them and support them with a donation. FREE T-SHIRT FOR EACH STUDENT RAISING AT LEAST $25. 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 7, 2014 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 7, 2014 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 7, 2014 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 7, 2014 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 7, 2014 RECYCLE WITH US!
