The memorial of St Augustine of Hippo (North Africa) is usually on this day in the Church calendar. St. Augustine was a tumultuous youth and was converted to Christianity at age 33 through the prayers of his mother, St. Monica, and the teaching of St Ambrose of Milan. Augustine became Bishop of Hippo and was one of the greatest Fathers of the Church. His humility and love of prayer shows in his writings, especially his book, Confessions. He said one time “what breathing is to the body, prayer is to the soul.” St. Monica, his mother and the patron saint of mothers, prayed for his conversion for 28 years. She had a great influence on other people too: with her prayers and humble example, her pagan husband and her cantankerous mother-in-law became Christians. This is a good weekend to ask God who we should pray for and how to deepen our prayer with Scripture and self-denial. Who knows who God will work on using our prayers???? Fr. Galvon PARISH NEWS & EVENTS SUNDAY SOCIAL: Come and take time to meet visitors and fellow parishioners. Pray that I be blessed with the courage to follow God’s will even at times when I do not understand. Ask our Lord to lead me to a life worthy of His love, that I may one day share the riches of His kingdom. HOLY ROSARY CATHEDRAL PARISH | WWW.HOLYROSARYCATHEDRAL.ORG What's wrong with Assisted Suicide Many citizens legitimately ask, “What’s wrong with assisted suicide?” If this is purely a private matter, then the only people who can be harmed are those who request it. Assisted suicide is not purely a private matter. It affects huge vulnerable populations who will experience new pressures and financial incentives to die. Fr. Spitzer will discuss why assisted-suicide is a fundamental justice issue – giving freedoms to one group that impose onerous burdens to die on other groups – the vulnerable, disabled, and the economically and socially marginalized. Friday, Sept. 2, from 7-9 pm at the John Paul II Pastoral Centre. To register, visit www.rcav.org/assisted-suicide AROUND THE ARCHDIOCESE PERM ANENT DIACONATE ACCEPTING NEW APPLICATIONS Archbishop Miller has announced that a third group of m en will begin form ation for the Perm anent Diaconate this com ing Septem ber. O Sacrum Convivium (Quartet) -O. Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly are one answer; so is generous giving of time, talent, and treasure. But being a Christian steward means more. As Christian stewards, we receive God’s gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord. “As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Pt 4:10). World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation – Sep 1 In 2015, Pope Francis initiated the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation on September 1 of each year. The Day of Prayer for Creation, says Pope Francis, is "an opportunity to reaffirm our personal vocation to be stewards of creation, to thank God for the wonderful handiwork which he has entrusted to our care, and to implore his help for the protection of creation as well as his pardon for the sins committed against the world in which we live."
