SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING
DEAR PARISHIONERS and VISITORS:
Prayer for the Week
Like m any people, when I hear the words “king and “queen”,
I have an im age form ed by fairy tales and historical novels. The
rulers of countries live in castles. They wear crowns and long
capes and sit on thrones while their loyal subjects pay them
hom age. W hile I am aware that m odern kings and queens wear
“regular” clothes unless tradition dictates otherwise and that
castles have becom e m ore contem porary, I still watch royal
weddings for a glim pse of the pageantry that fed m y childhood
fantasies.
Pilate had an idea of what kings were like, too. In the first
century, kings m ade laws and led people into battle. They had
great arm ies and were a danger to another country’s way of life.
The Jews kept talking about a m essiah who would becom e king
and destroy Israel’s enem ies. Pilate wasn’t taking any chances.
For Rom e’s sake, he would get rid of anyone who seem ed a
threat.
W hat Pilate failed to realized was that Israel’s king had a very
specific function, and it was not to m ake laws or lead arm ies.
Instead, the king was to study and obey the Law of God and
becom e him self the exam ple of obedience (see Dt 17:18-20).
W hen Pilate called Jesus “the King of the Jews”, his words were
truer than he knew, for Jesus was obedient to his Father, even
unto accepting death for our sake. But Pilate had no idea why he
was right because he was thinking in hum an term s.
Today we honor Christ, the king of the Jews, of all of us, and
of the whole universe. Let us see him as he is and do as he does.
Mary Katharine Deeley

Jesus, You are truly a King because
You have come into the world to institute
among men the rule of God. Every man who
is of the truth, every man who believes in
God and recognizes His authority in human
affairs, owes You a loyal and undivided
allegiance and “hears Your voice.”
You are humble and submissive as You
speak of Your kingdom. You declare that
Your kingdom is upon earth, but not of the
earth; it is a spiritual, supernatural kingdom,
the kingdom of truth. It does not fight with
weapons of metal, but with the power of
conviction, and conquers by this means the
hearts that by right belong to it. You
Yourself are witness to this truth, and You
Yourself are the Truth.
Reign supremely in my heart and in my
life. Your reign is heavenly peace; Your law
is love. Help me to pray and work that Your
kingdom may come into every soul, every
family, every nation. Amen.

Hoy celebramos a Cristo Rey. Los " súbditos " de este Rey,
somos todos los bautizados. Nosotros sí " podemos
defender a nuestro Rey ".

celebración a Ntra. Sra. Sta. Ma. de Guadalupe. ¡ Aparta la

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
The exchange betw een Jesus and Pilate in today’s Gospel is,
arguably, the most important exchange in all of literature. Pilate
asks Jesus: “ W hat have you done?” Jesus replies that he testifies
to the truth. In the second reading w e are reminded of the
essence of that truth: Christ, ruler of all, loves us, liberates us
from the bonds of sin, makes us a new kingdom. As w e approach
the Advent season, this w eek w ould be a good time to reflect on
the question: W hat have w e done in our daily lives, in our
actions, w ords, private prayer, and in our interaction with others,
to testify that Jesus is Lord?
