Today’s Gospel Reflection: Matthew 13:1-23
GIVING OF ONESELF
S
cientists have recently begun to discuss the idea that the primary force behind all life in the universe is selfgift. This is how everything from galaxies to human babies are born and sustained.
If we read the opening of today’s passage from Isaiah correctly, we see that he anticipated twentiethcentury scientists by over twenty five hundred years. Using the self-giving example of the rain and snow clouds
that water the earth that then yields fruit, which in turn is given over to nourish creatures, Isaiah leads us to understand that the primary force behind all life is the word of God. The ultimate giving of that word, we believe,
was Jesus Christ, who, in the greatest revelation of divine love, gave of himself on the cross.
To what degree are we in touch with that self-giving God in whose image we are made? To what extent do we really follow the self-giving
example of Christ into whose death and resurrection we were baptized, whose ultimate self‑gift we celebrate every week in the Eucharist? With
God’s help, our lives can be like Isaiah’s rain and snow, and we will not return to heaven until we have done our part to make the earth fruitful.

OUR LADY OF MONT
CARMEL
One of the signs in the tradition of the Church from many centuries
ago is the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It is a sign
approved by the Church and accepted by the Carmelite Order as an
external sign of love for Mary, of the trust her children have in her,
and of commitment to live like her.
The word scapular indicates a form of clothing, which
monks wore when they were working. With the passage of time, people began to give symbolic meaning to it: the cross to be borne every
day as disciples and followers of Christ. In some religious orders,
such as the Carmelites, the Scapular turned into a sign of their way
of life. The Scapular came to symbolize the special dedication of
Carmelites to Mary, the Mother of God, and to express trust in her
motherly protection as well as the desire to be like her in her commitment to Christ and to others. Thus it became a sign of Mary.
In the Middle Ages many Christians wanted to be associated with the orders founded at that time: Franciscans, Dominicans,
Augustinians, and Carmelites. Groups of lay people began to emerge
in associations such as confraternities and sodalities.
All the religious orders wanted to give these lay people a
sign of affiliation and of participation in their spirit and apostolate.
That sign was often a part of their habit: a cloak, a cord, a scapular.
Among the Carmelites, the stage came when a smaller
version of the Scapular was accepted as the sign of belonging to the
Order and an expression of its spirituality.
PAYER FOR OUR NEW PASTOR
AND FOR OUR NEW PAROCHIAL VICARS
God our Father,
Your Son Jesus promised to be with your people to the end
of the ages and to accompany them in love through the gift
of the Holy Spirit.
We praise you for sending us your servants
Rev. Francisco Miramontes, Rev. John Tran Nguyen,
and Rev. Arthur Yabes,
who has chosen to walk with us on our journey of faith.
Fill them with that same Spirit of Christ that they may
come to know and love us as you know and love
your own people.
Heal whatever loss they may feel from what has been
left behind,
and ease any anxiety that comes with starting something
new.
Through their leadership,
help us continue to grow as a faithful community,
committed to serving you
in the least of our brothers and sisters. Amen.

Thoughts on Giving
“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his
benefits.” -Psalm 103:2
The words of the Psalm remind us to praise God for all that He
does for us. This age-old attitude of praise and thanksgiving can
still be a source of great joy for Christians today.
A
CHALLENGE TO CHANGE
t this time of the year farmers and gardeners begin to see the
fruits of all their labors. They sowed more seed than they needed,
as not all survive and produce. The parable of the
sower offers layers of new meaning. In Jesus’ day,
following the Law of Moses was said to assure abundant blessings. Jesus demonstrated that following
the rules and living the life are not the same. Why
does the seed of the word not bear fruit in everyone?
Jesus quotes Isaiah, who describes people as dull of hearing with their
eyes shut. Jesus says that if people really hear and really see, they
might have to change.
Do we really hear the word and allow it to take root in our
lives, or do we push it to the edges or choke it? Disciples are the ones
who water and nurture it, asking Jesus to help them produce abundant
fruit.
Living Stewardship Now
Where has the word of God landed in the good soil
of your life, and how does it bear fruit? Where has it
been choked out or lost?

NEW MEMBERS WELCOME
egistering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a
Catholic community and a commitment to the life of the parish family. To so clearly state your Catholic commitment in all its dimensions
brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds.
Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time
for infant baptism, school registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals.
We are often asked to provide affidavits for baptismal and confirmation sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active,
and contributing member in our parish. How do you know if you are already registered? A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings.
So, are you a registered parishioner? If not, please consider
registering. Registration forms are always available at the church entrances. Please complete one today and return it this week if you would
like to join our community. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
Knowing God is not so much a question of opening a book and reading about God, but of opening the heart and loving God.

HEALTH CORNER
Oats. Oats’ cholesterol- and blood pressure-lowering powers come
from beta-glucan, a type of soluble fibre. One cup (250 mL) a day of
cooked oat bran, 1 ½ cups (375 ml) of cooked oatmeal or thee packets
of instant oatmeal provide enough beta-glucan to lower blood cholesterol by about five percent and heart attack risk by about 10 percent.
HUMOR
—Two priests were riding very fast on a motorcycle. They were
promptly stopped by a policeman who said, “What do you think you
are doing? What if you have an accident?”
The priests say, “Don't worry, my son. Jesus is with us.”
The policeman says, “In that case, I have to book you. Three people
are not allowed to ride on a motorcycle.”

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
ith the Reformation, some early Protestants, including the
“Anabaptists,” rejected infant baptism in favor of “believer’s baptism.”
Against Orthodox and Catholic practice, which favored baptism as soon as
possible for a newborn, these movements desired that the candidate for baptism speak for him- or herself at a mature age, not through godparents as an
infant. Today, it is clear that they were rejecting a very ancient practice (even
as early as the second century) of baptizing children of all ages. Children
came first in ancient baptismal ceremonies, and someone would speak for
them. Gregory of Nazianzen wanted to delay the baptism of children to three
years of age, since at that age they could retain at least some impression of
the liturgy. He made an exception for the very ill, who were to be baptized
ahead of the annual Easter baptism. That means that infants and children
were normally baptized together with adults, and that everyone received confirmation and the Eucharist.
The tone of the early bishops’ writings is generous and compassionate, and seeks to build up the eucharistic assembly by widely celebrating
the gift of the Holy Spirit. If a priest celebrated baptism, then the gift of the
Spirit was postponed for the bishop, but with no regard for the person’s age.
So, until the fifth century, confirmation was for infants, too.

XV DOMINGO DE TIEMPO ORDINARIO - 13 de Julio, 2014
Reflexión al Evangelio de hoy: Mateo 13,1-23
L

abundante. Copyright © 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
