MATS FOR THE HOMELESS PROJECT FOR THE YEAR OF MERCY Our Parish is undertaking a project to make comfortable, weather-proof, portable, sleeping mats for the Homeless in celebration of “The Year of Mercy”, ending 11/20/16. The mats, made from plastic bags, require about 500 to 800 bags for each mat. To complete this project we will be collecting bags from Walmart, Giant, Shop Rite, and Acme. The project requires both crafters and unskilled labor. Meet in the church basement on Sundays after the 12:00 noon Mass on 10/23, 11/6, 11/13, & 12/4. Please join us in this Mercy gift to the Holy Father. Bring your plastic bags, and, if possible, a pair of scissors. Men, woman and teens are welcome. We are especially looking for crafters who crochet or are willing to learn. For more information, please contact Jackie Bujalski, 215-932-7581 or Jean Foster, 215-945-8684. Check it out on YouTube at “plastic mats for the homeless.” ATTENTION: HEALING HOOKS AND HUGS Our healing Shawl program is still ongoing. If you or anyone you know would like to have a Healing Prayer Shawl, contact Jean Foster, 215-945-8684. Page Three Dear Faithful Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Our Church’s celebration of the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy casts a distinct light on World Mission Sunday 2016. It invites us to consider the mission ad gentes as a great, immense work of mercy, both spiritual and material. On this World Mission Sunday, all of us are invited to “go out” as missionary disciples, each generously offering their talents, creativity, wisdom and experience to bring the message of God’s tenderness and compassion to the entire human family. Pope Francis’ sentiments above for the celebration of the 90th World Mission Sunday, on October 23, call each of us to be a “Witness of Mercy”, the theme of this year’s Archdiocesan celebration. Missionaries know from experience that the Gospel of forgiveness and mercy can bring joy and reconciliation, justice and peace. The mandate of the Gospel to “go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” Mt. 28:19a-20 has not ceased; rather this command commits all of us, in the current landscape with all its challenges, to hear the call to a renewed missionary “impulse”. If we want our faith to be fruitful, we need to bring it alive first in prayer, and then in action. The greatest way we can show love to other persons is by sharing Jesus Christ with them. And that means all of us are called to be Missionaries. I have said this in the past and it holds true today. This Jubilee year marks the 90th anniversary of World Mission Sunday, first approved by Pope Pius XI in 1926, and organized by the Pontifical Mission Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Your prayers and material support will help the Society provide resources to missionaries in 1,111 mission dioceses throughout the world to care for Christian communities in need and for the proclamation of the Gospel to the ends of the earth Gospel. I thank you in advance for your generous response to the needs of others. World Mission Sunday invites you to be a “Witness of Mercy” to communities throughout the globe. With your help, the Lord’s mercy, extended by your acts of solidarity, your prayers and your help, will change the world! Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. 0217 October 16, 2016 TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page Four THE OBITUARY FOR MR. COMMON SENSE Today, we mourn the passing of an old friend and great institution, by the name of Common Sense. Common Sense lived a long life but died in the United States as a result of heart failure brought on by years and years of poor life decisions and community neglect. No one really knows how old he was, some say he was born during the Enlightenment still others say during the age of the Founding Fathers - his birth records were lost long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape and revisionism. He selflessly devoted his life to service in schools, hospitals, homes, factories, families, helping folks get jobs, all done without fanfare, foolishness or acts of Congress. For countless decades, petty rules, silly laws and frivolous lawsuits held no power over Common Sense. He was credited with cultivating such valued lessons as to know when one should come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, that life isn't always fair, and why not to marry on the rebound. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial principles (don't spend more than you earn), reliable parenting strategies (the adults are in charge, not the kids), raise your own kids and it's okay to come in second and keep score. A veteran of the Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression and the Technological Revolution, Common Sense survived cultural and educational trends including the “New Math”, “Making Calculus Fun”, “Ebonics” and student directed classrooms where the only ones working harder were the teachers. However, his health declined when he became infected with the "the needs of the one" virus, the "but I've got a right to" bacteria, "I'm entitled to" flu, "I'm a victim" infection and the "I can't recall cough" with a severe case of "I misspoke but didn't lie," cramps. In recent decades, his waning strength proved no match for ravages of well intentioned but overbearing regulations. He watched in pain as good people became self-seeking lawyers, psychologists and sociologists who have an excuse for every bad behavior but are short on solutions. Mr. Commonsense had to go to the emergency room when he saw politicians, lie, steal, cheat, peddle influence for huge sums of money, and then say, "I should be your president." He vomited when he discovered people were selling baby body parts with the majority of public outraged directed towards the messengers of such acts. His health rapidly deteriorated when schools endlessly implemented zero tolerance policies. Reports of a six year old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, a teen suspended for taking a swig of mouthwash after lunch and teachers being reprimanded for not allowing students to plagiarize. He declined even further when schools mandated parental consent to administer aspirin to a student, but could not inform the mom and dad when their child was pregnant and wanted an abortion. Finally, Common Sense lost his will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became purveyors of psychology and good feelings, criminals received better treatment than victims and federal judges struck their noses in everything from the Boy Scouts to professional sports and people who paid into Medicare their whole lives couldn’t afford dental care when people who didn’t work at all got full coverage. Finally, when a woman who failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, was awarded a huge settlement, Common Sense threw in the towel. As the end neared Common Sense drifted in and out of logic, but was kept informed of developments regarding questionable regulations such as those for gas can caps, rocking chairs, stepladders and recycled garbage. The death blow came when the Supreme Court discovered new rights previously hidden in the Constitution that not even the framers of the Constitution knew, while also ruling that words and phrases can mean whatever we want them to mean, as long as we get what we want. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by three stepsiblings: My A. Feelings, Ima Whiner and Nomor Principal. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. 0217 October 16, 2016 TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUBILE YEAR OF MERCY - BUS TRIP Saturday, November 5, 2016 Saint Michael the Archangel is sponsoring a bus trip to The National Shrine’s of Saint John Neumann and Saint Rita of Cascia in Philadelphia, Pa. This will be an opportunity to visit two of the beautiful national shrines in our area and walk through a designated Holy Door in Celebration of the Jubilee Year of Mercy which ends on November 20th. In addition to a 45 minute guided tour of both shrines, you will have an opportunity to attend the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The trip will include a light lunch. The cost of the trip will be $25.00. We will leave from Saint Michael’s at 8:30 a.m. and will return by 4:30. If you are interested, please call Marcy Beck at 215-6301843. PREPARATION FOR THE SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE The Sacrament of Marriage is a profound responsibility. Active members of our parish who wish to make arrangements to have the Sacrament celebrated at St. Michael, must call the rectory at least 6 months prior to your wedding date and speak with a Priest. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults If you are a Baptized Catholic who has not received all of your Sacraments (Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation) or if you are not Catholic and would like to learn more about the Catholic faith, then this is for you! All that is required is your desire to grow in your relationship with the Lord and your commitment of time. We meet on Tuesdays from 7PM - 9PM in Room 9, located at the “B” door of the school building. If you have questions, call the Religious Education Office at 215-547-2518. PRAYER FOR OCTOBER SALVE, REGINA Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen. 0217 October 16, 2016 TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page Six OUR SCHOOL NEWS Religious Education News Greetings: HAPPY GRANDPARENTS DAY TO ALL OUR GRANDPARENTS TODAY!!!
