A recent article in the Wall Street Journal confirmed what I have long suspected.
Women are being ripped off in terms of the clothing that they purchase. It used
to be that men and women's clothing were all made with great attention to
quality and detail. Before too long, fashion began to take a front seat to quality.
The result is that women's clothing is designed to last for a season and not much
more.
It used to be that women would go out and spend an entire day shopping for a
suit or dress. They would shop with friends and ask their opinion. "Does this
flatter me?" In those days, the friends would answer honestly, because they
knew how important it was to make a good purchase. Today, women rush into a
store, picking up a top or a scarf, hoping it will go with something at home in the
closet. If you ask "How does this look?" the salesclerk will usually provide an
enthusiastic sign of approval. A sale is a sale, right?
How can women avoid getting ripped off like this? Shop for quality. Start first in
the men's department and feel the quality of the material they use for men's
suits and slacks. Look inside the garment and see if the seams are bound. Is the
waistband taped and lined for durability? Are the buttons securely attached?
Does the zipper function easily? Is the fabric non crushable and comfortable
against the skin?
Ladies, well-constructed, tailored clothing is your best
friend. It will hide your figure imperfections and allow
you to look stunning without wasting your money. Stop
getting shortchanged at the store. Sometimes, despite
how well you care for your clothing, garments wear out
quickly. The solution to that is to purchase better
made clothing. Stop looking for the fads, and look
instead at how well a garment is constructed. It should
look good and wear comfortably.
