It is one the prophet obviously cherishes despite the derision and reproach it brings him. In the Gospel, Jesus indicates a similar bond with his Father. In spite of the difficult challenges presented by following God’s will, Jesus is not deterred. Giving up our own worldly cares and dreams, even as we accept pain and suffering, is more than a fair exchange for doing the will of God. The only way to do God’s will is offer our whole selves to God. As St. Paul writes in the Le er to the Romans: “Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Romans 12:2a). Copyright © J. S. JMJ Dear Parishioners and Friends, Labor Day used to be a big holiday. Now it is a day used as a reference point to remind us that the summer season is coming to an end and that school is beginning; that life is returning to “normal.” This is a sad reality of our modern age because we no longer pause to reflect on the meaning and value of human work. We no longer perceive work as a par cipa on in God’s wonderful art of crea on. Labor Day is an opportunity to take stock of the ways workers are honored and respected. Every human being enjoys a basic right to be respected, not because of any tle, posi on, pres ge or accomplishment, but because, first of all, we are created in the image and likeness of God. Earlier this year, Pope Francis said, “Work is fundamental to the dignity of a person...It gives one the ability to maintain oneself, one’s family, to contribute to the growth of one’s own na on.” Unfortunately, millions of workers today are denied this honor and respect as a result of unemployment, underemployment, unjust wages, and exploita on. I encourage all of us this Labor Day to renew our commitment to promote the dignity of the human person through work that is honorable, and recognizes the God-given dignity of the working person. Pope St. John Paul II wrote an ar cle in which he used the term the “gospel of work,” wherein through and in Jesus Christ all human work has been transformed. In his Encyclical le er, “On Human Work,” Pope St. John Paul II presents the Chris an vision of the dignity and meaning of human work. To come to a new understanding of the dignity of human labor requires what St. Paul calls a “renewal of the mind” (Romans 12:2). Jesus was a man of work which enabled him to develop his humanity. Work was forever transformed by Christ the worker. He learned carpentry skills from St. Joseph from an early age. He worked with his hands and got dirty, just as many of us do in our daily labor. Jesus’ labor was joined with the Father just as our labors are joined with God the Father. For Catholics work can be seen as par cipa on in the ongoing redemp ve mission of Jesus Christ. Jesus viewed his en re life and mission as work. He was always doing the “work” of the One who sent Him (John 9:3-4). We are invited by His grace to do the same. Please join me on Labor Day for morning Mass at 8:30 in our beau ful Church, dedicated to St. Joseph, who has always been depicted in Chris an art as a carpenter, a working man. We need to keep in the forefront of our hearts the reality that St. Joseph is the Universal Patron of Workers. The best way for us to honor St. Joseph is to pray for all our brothers and sisters who are out of work, to support our brothers and sisters in their daily work, and to seek his intercession as we work to bring about the Kingdom of God to the world around us. Wishing you a wonderful week of work and prayer. May God bless you and all those you love, Fr. Timothy P. Andres, O.Carm.
