From The Pastor
I was surprised recently when I was asked about the
Trinity. The questioner wondered how, if God the Father
was the head of the Trinity, how could each person of the
Trinity be equal and indivisible? I had to reflect upon the
answer.
Unaware at the time, this was a good warm up to the Feast
of the Most Holy Trinity that we celebrate today. The feast
had its origins early in the Church in response to the Arian
heresy that debated the humanity and divinity of Jesus. As
early as the fourth and fifth centuries a votive Mass in honor
of the Holy Trinity was being said. Prior to the year one
thousand, particularly in monasteries, Mass honoring the
Holy Trinity became more wide spread and was celebrated
as a feast day on the Sunday after Pentecost. Finally, in the
year 1334 Pope John XXII named the feast for the universal
Church. What we celebrate today has been celebrated in the
Church for well over a thousand years as we honor, worship,
and adore the majesty and unity of the Godhead in the life of
the Trinity.
Is one person of the Trinity more powerful or more
important than another? The answer is no. We profess the
Trinity to be one God in three persons, distinct in
personhood, yet equal in majesty, and indivisible in unity.
More recently this same truth as been expressed as one God
given in three ways of being. Essential as the concept of
personhood is to the Trinity, it does create a bit of a visual
conundrum as we try to imagine three persons superglued
together so as to be one.
God is one, yet experienced in three ways of being. We
know God as Father. The role and activity of the Father is to
create; to be the source and origin of divine abundance in the
providence of creation. We profess Jesus to be the Son of
God, fully human born of the Virgin Mary, remaining fully
divine as the Incarnate Word of God. The role and activity of
the Incarnate Son is to redeem and liberate humanity and all
creation from the disorder of sin caused by the deception of
evil. We experience the redemption of Jesus through faith in
the healing compassion, merciful forgiveness, and divine
power of Jesus to perform miracles. Our experience is
further confirmed in the new life of the Resurrection after
the perfect self-emptying death of the Jesus on the Cross.
Through our faith and prayer, we perceive the presence and
power of Jesus in our lives here and now through the gift of
the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. The role
and action of the Holy Spirit is to sanctify and bring unity to
all who live in Christ. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth
(today’s gospel) who reminds, informs, and reveals the
wisdom and will of Jesus to all believers. We experience the
Holy Spirit in countless ways of inspiration, healing
presence, conviction against sin, call to conversion, loving
peace, insight, answer to problems, agent of reconciliation,
and one who prays in us as we do not know how to pray of
ourselves.
One person of the Trinity is not more than, or greater than
another of the persons; each is perfectly self-emptying into
the others. Another way to say the same thing is to say that
each person of the Trinity is perfectly and completely for the
others. The gospel today begins to form this understanding.
Each person of the Trinity is perfect love for the others.
Jesus says, ‘all that the Father has is mine…’ Further, Jesus
declares to the Spirit all that he hears from the Father. The
Trinity has and is one perfect will: unity in love. All that the
Father wills is perfectly fulfilled in the willful action of
Jesus. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus says, ‘Father, not
my will, but your will be done’. Earlier in John’s gospel
Jesus declares, ‘I do nothing on my own, I do only what I
see the Father doing’.
In the Father’s act of creating we see the action and
presence of Jesus and the Holy Spirit (St. Paul to the
Ephesians and Colossians). In the redemption of Jesus, we
see the will of the Father and the action of the Holy Spirit. In
the gift of the Holy Spirit we see the will of the Father
revealed and accomplished in the work of the Son.
Each person of the Trinity is perfectly self-emptying love
for the other. The Father pours all that the Father is into the
person of the Son. All the Son has been given by the Father
has been poured out for humanity and all creation for the
sake of reconciliation and unity. The Holy Spirit is the
perfect love of the Father for the Son, and the love of the
Son for the Father. The Holy Spirit is the perfect love of the
Father and Son that proceeds forth into you and me, and all
creation.
The Father would never say, I am greater than the Son.
The Son would never claim authority greater than that of the
Father. The Spirit is the perfect unity and divine authority of
the Father and the Son. Each is eternally for the other.
This is the model and intention of our created existence.
Like the Godhead, we become most ourselves when we are
for others. Accepting the gift of creation, the promise of
redemption, and the unity of love in the Spirit, our nature is
to share and give ourselves to others in love. Alone in
ourselves this is impossible; with and within the unity of the
Trinity all is possible and will come to its fruition in the
divine promise of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

big step forward last week and we are close to our goal. If

grateful for your goodness in support of our parish and the
larger Church.

Mass cards, and prayers for my brother, Tom. They have
been a great blessing to me and to Tom and his family. For

THE TRINITY IS LOVE
Theologians throughout the Christian centuries have
spilled much ink (and, on occasion, some blood) in
describing and defining the mystery of the Holy Trinity.
One of the earliest, most poetic, and beautiful
descriptions comes from St. Augustine in De Trinitas,
wherein he describes the Trinity as One (the Father)
who loves, One (the Son) who is loved, and One (the
Spirit) who is love. And these three Ones are also one
Three.
It might be wisest for us to leave the technical
wranglings to the academic theologians, and focus on
the fact that the three Persons of the Trinity are indeed
persons; they are best known and understood in their
love for each other and for us. We are made in the
image of those loving persons, and our best
relationships are lived out in the context of love. Truly
loving relationships are inexhaustible mysteries to be
lived in joy. If this is true of our human relationships,
how much more so is it true of our relationship with the
Trinity. And how much more does it call upon us to be
joyful, loving witnesses of the holy mystery of the Onein-Three. This is the mystery to which we were called
when we were chosen to be God's own, baptized with
water in the name of the Holy Trinity.

parish! Thanks to your dedication, we almost ran out of
extra prayer cards last weekend. A new stack of prayer
cards to pray for the Year of Mercy has been placed at
each entrance to the church. You and your family are
invited to take one and use it to pray for our parish and all
within our parish boundaries.
It has been seven weeks since we started praying this
prayer.

Lord Jesus Christ,
You have taught us to be merciful like the
heavenly Father, and have told us that
whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face
and we will be saved. Send your Spirit and
consecrate every one of us and all within the
boundaries of St. Vincent Ferrer with its
anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be
a year of grace from the Lord, and your
Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring
good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to
captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to
the blind. We ask this through the intercession
of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and
reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for
ever and ever. Amen.

The Fr. James B. Heary Knights of
Columbus is asking the St. Vincent Ferrer Community to
come together to pray the Rosary.
Everyone is invited to participate in the organization’s
5th Sunday Rosary Program. This service will be
conducted on Sunday, May 29th at 7pm, here at St.
Vincent Ferrer Church.
Knights will be providing all those in attendance with
the finger rosaries and prayer booklets. The booklet
includes the prayers necessary for praying the rosary.
Participants may also bring their own rosaries to use
during the service.

Around the turn of the
fourth century, Augustine, still
fairly fresh from the baptismal
waters in Milan, was elected
bishop of a tiny city in North Africa, Hippo. He told
his people, “While I am frightened by what I am for
you, then I am consoled by what I am with you. For
you I am a bishop, with you I am a Christian.” He had
his priorities right, and also knew that everyone
coming from the water arises with a ministry, a
specific role, in bringing about God’s kingdom.
If we were asked to purge English of Greek
vocabulary, we would gain an insight into key
ministries in our church. Bishop, from the Greek
episkopos, would become simply “overseer;” priest,
from the Greek presybter, would become “elder;” and
deacon, from the Greek diakonos, would be “servant.”
Each title stands in relationship to all the baptized,
serving the community, helping it to be the Body of
Christ. In our deepest tradition, each of these ordained
ministries is attuned to help us become our best selves,
to hunger and thirst for the coming of God’s kingdom.
The goal for each one of us is to be able to recognize
the presence of Christ in worship and in service.
Although only some of us are ordained to ministry,
each of us is called to ministry.

Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity
The word mercy, Pope Francis declared in his
announcement of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, “reveals the
very mystery of the Most Holy Trinity” (Misericordiae
Vultus, 2). For mercy is how God
comes to meet us; mercy is the
fundamental law helping us recognize
everyone as brothers and sisters;
mercy is the bridge connecting God
and humanity, opening our hearts to
the hope of being loved forever
despite our sinfulness. God’s selfrevelation as a life-giving, lovesharing Trinity of Persons draws us
closer to God in friendship and
communion. Both Judaism and Islam
consider mercy one of God’s most
important
attributes.
Israel
unceasingly proclaims God boundless
in mercy. Islam addresses the Creator
as “Merciful and Kind,” believing
divine mercy limitless, its doors always open. May this
Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis prays, open us to
more fervent dialogue, deepen our mutual understanding,
eliminate all closed-minded disrespect, and drive out every
form of violence and discrimination.
