Educator Stories
Marie Alberry-Hawkins:
“Ahn, a third grader from Vietnam, entered
school partway through the year when her
family moved to San Jose. One day we were
singing “Hello My Friends, Hello” in different
languages, and she quietly asked if we could
also sing it in Vietnamese. I was delighted to
help her write it on the board and then let her
teach the class how to
pronounce the words. All
the children were enriched by
learning something new, and
Ahn had the chance to shine
in front of her peers. She
smiled a little brighter every
week when the class sang in
her native language!”
Donna Poulos:
“One of my fifth graders had what could be
a life-changing experience with the recorder
this year. Tomas had been very disruptive in
school. Yet when we introduced him to the
recorder, he learned to play it with ease (more
quickly than his classmates) and earned much
admiration. He was always one of the first to be
ready to play. What a joy and
a surprise it was to witness
his eagerness to participate!
I have urged him to play
a woodwind instrument
in band next year and
hope that music will help
keep him on track during
the rest of his school
years. It certainly has
the power to do so!”

Students Served 110% growth over five years
In recent years, we expanded our services
significantly throughout San Mateo County
and are now reaching complete school
districts. In 2014-15, we began serving many
under-resourced schools in Santa Clara County
where students were previously without any
music education. Thank you for joining with
us to bring music and all of its benefits to
more children. Your continued support will
bring Music for Minors to many more Bay Area
schools who are still in
need. Every child deserves
the joy of music!
