From the Pastor’s Desk…
Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of
Christ popularly known as Corpus Christi. This feast was instituted by Pope Urban IV in 1264 who asked St. Thomas Aquinas, who was living at that time, to
write hymns for the feast and he wrote, two, better known to the older members
of our congregation, “Tantum Ergo” and “O Salutaris”.
In the first reading (Exodus 2:3-8) we heard about the old covenant that was
sealed with the blood of animal sacrifice which Moses sprinkled on the people. On
the contrary, the second reading (Hebrews 9:11-15) reminds us that the new
covenant was sealed with the blood of Christ. Here it is important to see the difference between these two covenants. While the first covenant never guaranteed
eternal life, the new covenant does because it was sealed with the precious blood
of Jesus through a perfect sacrifice offered once and for all.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “The Eucharist is source and summit of the Christian life…For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself… …In brief, the Eucharist is the
sum and summary of our faith: Our way of thinking is attuned to the Eucharist, which in turn confirms our way of thinking” (CCC1324-5).
Jesus feeds us spiritually in the Sacrament of the Eucharist. When we look at the
host, we look at Christ. When we share in the Eucharistic meal, we share in the
life of Christ and in the life of the Church, His body. This is a great mystery, that
the very source of our salvation is transformed into something you can hold in
the palm of your hand. And of course, we carry something greater than ourselves.
Let us adore Christ saying: “Oh Sacrament Most Holy; Oh Sacrament Divine, all
praise and all thanksgiving be every moment thine.”
Walking with the Lord (Corpus Christi Procession)
We will honor the Body of Christ as we process outdoors with the Blessed Sacrament. When we carry the Eucharist into our neighborhood we are professing our
faith outside the doors of our Church. This Procession will be at the conclusion of the 12:15 PM Mass. We encourage all to participate in the Corpus
Christi Procession.
Blessing of the Mary’s Garden
Last Sunday after the 12:15 Mass there was a Blessing of the Mary’s Garden. We
are thankful to all who participated in that Grace-filled moment. We are grateful
to Very Reverend Fr. Tom Pettei, Episcopal Vicar for his presence and prayers on this special event in the life of SNT.
We also celebrated the Flower Festival in honor of our Mother of Perpetual Help.
The procession was taken on the streets of Jamaica during which the participants
were praying the Rosary and singing the Marian Songs. I thank Bobby and Tess
Consuegra and their team, for making this day a great day for all of us. May we
continue to honor our Blessed Mother by following her example of prayer and
faith.
God bless you,
Fr. John Francis
