A Mission of Giving
Mercy Foundation recognizes that we cannot be everything to all
people, but we would like to be “something” for some people.
We want to represent hope for a family facing significant health
challenges and provide the support they need to get through a very
rough period in their lives. No matter the issues, we want to be known
for always standing by families with sick children and our partner
organizations who serve them.
As you look to be “something” to somebody, we encourage you to treat
each person you encounter gently and with compassion.
Recognizing that as humans we are fragile and our hearts can be easily
broken through a painful act or unkind word. Compassion is the emotion
we experience when we become aware of, and feel the pain of others.
Compassion allows us to shift our focus from ourselves and our own
suffering to that of others, and to make an effort to relieve them from
that suffering.

Violence Prevention
last July, CHI Mission and Ministry funded a one-year
planning grant for Mercy Foundation to address child
abuse prevention in Douglas County. As a result of this
grant, the Violence Prevention Coalition was formed. In
the past nine months, the coalition has gathered participants from more than 30 Douglas County agencies and
organizations to focus community efforts around child
abuse prevention. Members come from public and private
sectors, as well as the not-for-profit and faith-based
communities. The coalition also continues to grow.

Courtney Smith and Donna Boak.
Courtney has been involved with the Douglas County Relay for life,
Douglas County Junior Miss and Maurices’ Annual Rescues and
Runaways.
Donna has been involved with the uCC theater and 4-H programs, as
well as a Festival of Trees tree designer and a volunteer for the umpqua
Valley Arts Summer Festival.

Festival of Trees

with the Silver Bell luncheon on Wednesday,
Nov. 30, and culminating with Family Day on
Sunday, Dec. 4. The Gala Evening and Auction
of beautiful decorated trees highlights the
week on Friday, Dec. 2.

Dental Clinics
Mercy Foundation kicks off dental clinics in the
Riddle School District.
Thanks to Sylvia and students from uCC, the first dental clinic saw almost 100 children! This was a great start to a
very much needed service for our Douglas County children.
About Sylvia and the Dental program
Energetic, dynamic and committed to prevention. These are some of the best words to describe Sylvia Simpson,
Mercy Foundation’s new dental health liaison and dental clinic coordinator.
Sylvia and her husband Tracy, a former Myrtle Creek resident, recently moved to Roseburg with their two children,
after both retiring from careers in the Air Force.
As a new recruit, Sylvia signed up to become a dental tech. In this role, she worked closely with military families and
found her focus of prevention. Sylvia was then selected to attend dental hygienist school and became a
registered dental hygienist. Over the years, she really made the most of her training both in her profession and in the
military, and prior to her retirement, she was the superintendent of the Dental Squadron at her base in Mountain
Home, Idaho.

The Air Force’s loss is truly our community’s gain.
With a heart for teaching prevention, the opportunity to head up Mercy Foundation’s new dental initiative is a
perfect fit.
Why the focus on dental health?
In a needs assessment conducted by the Healthy kids Outreach Program (HkOP), children reported tooth pain as
the third most prevalent health problem, following colds and flu.
lead by Sylvia, Mercy Foundation’s first dental clinics kicked off in Douglas County Schools this past spring. At the
first dental screening, 91 children were screened for existing dental issues. Several students were identified who
needed immediate care from a dentist; several more were scheduled for sealants. All of the children who attended
the screenings received a fluoride varnish and education on the proper way to brush and floss their teeth.
“The goal of our dental clinics is to provide kids with the tools they need for prevention and to ultimately make
more costly treatments in the future unnecessary,” says Sylvia.
