Helipad
Endowment
Life-flight is Life Saving
Douglas County mom, Lisa Jarrett, credits an emergency medical airlift
with saving her daughter Anna’s right arm when the teen was seriously
injured in a car accident.
“We truly understand what the expression ‘seconds count’ means, she
said. We witnessed an amazing number of things happening so quickly
and because of this fast action, her arm was saved.”
Anna Jarrett, now 19, spent three months at a Portland hospital after
she was transported from Mercy Medical Center. The quick care she
received at Mercy and in Portland not only saved her life, but also
resulted in her arm, that was nearly severed at the shoulder, being
successfully reattached.
“I’m very thankful,” Anna Jarrett said.
At a special helipad celebration, Mercy’s CEO Kelly C. Morgan, noted
that having the helipad back on campus is fantastic for patients who
need this service. “When you or your loved one’s life depends on quick
access to a specialized trauma care, having almost immediate access to
air transport is invaluable.”
Before the new helipad, patients who needed to be flown to another
facility were first transferred by ambulance to the airport and then
transferred onto a plane. Avoiding that second transfer is important.
“Every time a patient is moved during an emergency there is potential
for equipment to come unhooked,” Morgan said. “Which is why limiting
transfers is better for the patient and ultimately better patient care.”
It also helps that Emergency Airlift (EA), an air ambulance service, is
stationed at the Roseburg airport, making response time to Mercy less
than five minutes.
Life-saving air transport is also very expensive, so one of the ways in
which the community can help, is by donating to an Endowment that
Mercy Foundation has established for families in need.

Jeanne Hatfield/Zelma Taylor
Memorial Fund
Mercy Foundation is pleased to introduce a new partnership fund that
has been developed by Dean Hatfield in memory of his mother Zelma
Taylor and his wife Jeanne Hatfield. The Jeanne Hatfield/Zelma Taylor
Memorial Fund has been established to focus on the special needs of
disabled children and young adults of Douglas County. The intent of the
fund is to support and help establish programs in Douglas County that
allow this population group to develop physically and emotionally to
their fullest potential.
Dean originally established the Zelma Taylor Youth Memorial Fund in
September 2006 following the death of his mother, who was also a
grandmother to two special needs youth. He renamed the fund when his wife Jeanne died in September 2008,
after a 10-year challenge with cancer. She had been an elementary school teacher in Douglas County
for over 25 years and an avid volunteer for 20 years with the Douglas County Special Olympics program.
In 2008, Dean learned of Mercy Foundation at the DiGgs Barbecue and was intrigued by the Foundation’s mission
statement, “To enrich the health, well-being, and quality of life of children and families in Douglas County.” In talking
further with Lisa Platt, Foundation President, he decided to create the new partner fund at Mercy Foundation.
Over the past four years, some of the programs supported by these funds have been:
• A two week sports camp, YMCA Partners Sport Camp (formerly Camp Shriver).
• The Douglas Education Service District’s Motor Activities Training Program where severely disabled youth
participate in a full-day sports program. Most of these students are wheelchair bound and are accompanied by
non-disabled students of the school districts.
• The WISH project; providing special housing for disabled young people transitioning to independent living
accommodations.
• Mercy Foundation’s Healthy Kids Outreach Program.
• The 12th Annual St. Paddy’s Day Pub Crawl held March 17 was proclaimed a Day of Awareness for Youth with
Disabilities in Douglas County by the Douglas County Commissioners.

Back in the late ‘80s, a little baby who lived in umpqua Ore., was diagnosed with a ganglioneuroblastoma, a nerve tumor that started as a
lump on the left side of her neck. That little baby was
Sarah Beavers. Douglas County residents followed
Sarah’s progress through a number of articles that
ran in the news-Review. At 2 1/2 years of age, Sarah
underwent a 19-hour surgery that removed about
90% of her tumor. When surgery failed to remove
Sarah’s entire tumor, it grew back and entered the
skull, pushing on her brainstem.
Over the next several years there were many more
surgeries to follow. The Beavers had major medical insurance coverage,
but the insurance company did not cover $70,000 of the total bills, citing a pre-existing condition. Family and friends came to the rescue and
held auctions, garage sales, fundraisers to help the family with medical
expenses. Local businesses held fundraisers for the Beavers and after
the initial bills were paid, the remaining money was put into a trust in
the event that future medical treatments or surgeries might be
necessary.
It was truly a great day when Sarah passed her 10-year-cancer-free
anniversary, a milestone for this type of tumor. It was also time to
make some decisions about what to do with the money that had been
held in trust. Sarah’s parents wanted Sarah to decide. So with input
from her parents, Sarah decided to give the money to Mercy
Foundation and the Sarah Beavers Fund was created.
Today, Sarah is a cancer-free 22-year old student at Portland State
university majoring in Bus. Administration/Management Leadership.
For the past three summers, Sarah has volunteered at Camp
Millennium, a week-long summer camp for children with cancer.
As Sarah moves on with her life, she hopes that other area children can
be helped through her fund. “The people of Douglas County were so
generous when I needed help. They wanted to help a little girl get well.
I hope that this fund will continue to serve that purpose by spending
money in the same way and ultimately help other sick children get
better.”

Soon after Alysa was born it was suspected she
had serious heart and lung problems. Specialists
diagnosed serious heart-lung defects including
Disgorge syndrome, pulmonary atresia, and
tetralogy of Fallout.

Music Scholarship Available for 2011
Music has played such a huge part in many of our lives;
whether it was playing the piano at home, attending
concerts and shows or performing on stage.
To help celebrate Lance Emmon’s life and his love of
music, his family created the Lance Michael Emmons
scholarship to help a student with a passion for music
to pursue their academic goals.
Local area high school students with a love of music
are invited to apply for the Lance Michael Emmons
Scholarship. Applications and supporting documents
are due Spring 2011.
Lance Michael Emmons Scholarship is dedicated to
those whose lives have been enriched by music.

Proceeds from the sale of the
charity house to benefit Mercy Foundation’s Children’s Healthcare programs.
Jerry L. Tabor Building Inc. has generously donated the
proceeds of the sale of a house he built to benefit
Mercy Foundation’s Children’s Healthcare programs.
Tabor, a local builder, built the Charity House for the
purpose of donating the proceeds to benefit children in
the community. He has selected Mercy Foundation as
the recipient of these funds. In addition, Douglas County
realtor, Ben Tatone, along with the umpqua valley
Home Builders Association, played key roles in the
Charity House, helping out with the construction, as

A Work of Art
Wondering how (and why) a wonderfully
decorated piece of art — that just happens to
be in the shape of a Pig — ends up in Mercy’s
visitor’s lobby?
Here’s the Pig-Tale of “Rosie the Pig”
Rosie the Pig (who by the way was paid for by a benefactor and an art lover) moved from Seattle to
Roseburg over seven years ago to be used for fundraising for our very own Mercy Foundation’s
Children’s HealthCare Fund.
While she loved Seattle, her cousin Rachel kind of hogged all the spotlight up there. If you have not
been to Seattle, Rachel lives at Pike Place Market, where she collects thousands of dollars each year to
help fund important services for the needy in that community.
Rosie made her great ESCAPE and is now settled in at Mercy where she’s ready to start doing good
deeds in our own community as Roseburg’s largest piggy bank and will take donations for Mercy
Foundation’s Children’s HealthCare Fund.
So that — in short — is how we received a beautiful piece of art (and remember art is in the eye of
the beholder) in the shape of a pig.
Rosie is not only a very special piggy bank, she is truly
a work of ART.
All donations will be used to support
local children’s healthcare.
