Mary Meaney - Bayside Senior National School
Dear Parents / Guardians, Another school year comes to a close. The children are looking forward eagerly to the summer holidays and hopefully some fine weather. As with last year there should be no early closings this year with the exception of the days of end of term holidays. In line with the Haddington Rd. Agreement the teachers will work 36 extra hours outside of teaching time. These extra hours do not include time spent coaching sports, extracurricular activities or planning individually for class work. On behalf of the staff I would like to wish all parents / guardians a peaceful and relaxing summer. Thank you all for your continuing support for the work of the school and its activities. Please remember to put uniforms away carefully as well as books and stationery which may be needed next year. We look forward to seeing everybody on September 1st. Ona personal note I would like to thank everyone – pupils, colleagues, parents, members of Board of Management, PABS, the parish staff and the local community for all the co-‐operation, support and many kindnesses I have experienced since my appointment on April 13th 2015. I am fully aware of the responsibility and privilege it is to be Principal of Bayside Senior School and I am very grateful for the trust placed in me. With every good wish, Mary Meaney Principal End of Year Reports All the end of year reports have been sent to parents and parents are welcome to make an appointment to discuss any aspect with the child’s teacher. All reports include the results of standardised tests for Reading and Maths. The results overall are excellent and the pupils are achieving scores well ahead of the national average. This is a great credit to all concerned- to the teachers for their dedicated teaching, to the pupils for their own engagement in learning and to the parents for their ongoing support of the learning process. Welcome School Self Evaluation Report All schools have to engage in selfevaluation to prepare a report and a school improvement plan. This year Bayside Senior School has focussed on literacy, and in particular on comprehension, with the aim of helping readers understand what they read. The plan is available in the office and a summary of the main elements will be available on the website. We welcome our new pupils to Third class and also some new children to other classes in the school. We hope they will settle in quickly to their new classes and that they will enjoy their time in Bayside. As well as welcoming the children we also welcome their parents and families- some of whom already have other children in the school and also those who become part of Bayside Senior School for the first time. We look forward to having 112 new pupils in September. Sport We have had another busy year in our sports of football, hurling, camogie, basketball, athletics, soccer, tennis and tag rugby. The children were a credit to the school and acquitted themselves very well in terms of sportsmanship and behaviour. Congratulations to everyone in Naomh Barróg on the 40th anniversary of the Club. We were delighted to be associated with the 4th Class Hurling Blitz held recently between local schools and we were very grateful for the high level of parental involvement on the day. Our Boys’ Football Team got to the semi-finals of the Cumann an mBunscol League. Well done to Ruairí McDonald and Harry Nolan for wearing the Dublin jersey with pride and representing us so well at the Cumann na mBunscol friendly match against Antrim in Belfast. Our Senior Hurlers battled very hard and ended up drawing with Hollypark BNS for the Cumann na mBunscol Corn Marino Cup in Croke Park. As a result ten hurlers went forward and represented Dublin in the Leinster ‘Lift and Strike’ competition in Carlow. Our 4th Class Camogie Team trained very hard this year and have really developed their skills. We took part in the Mini-Basketball Blitz at the National Arena in Tallaght. Our Boys’ Senior B team won their section, the Girls’ Senior A team played very well and all were a credit to themselves and their coaches. Our Athletics Team came home with a Silver and a Bronze medal from Santry Sports at Morton Stadium. Well done to Lara Hegarty, Finn Alexander and all our proud athletes. Our 6th Classes won the annual inter-school Tag Rugby Blitz held at Suttonians. In June, they also took part in an FAI sponsored Soccer Blitz. Peninsula Tennis League organised in Our school were worthy winners of the first-ever conjunction with Sutton Tennis and Trackside Tennis Clubs. We acknowledge and thank all the local sports clubs who work with us here in Bayside Naomh Barróg GAA, Mid-Sutton Athletics, Mid-Sutton Soccer, Suttonians Rugby Club, Sutton Tennis and Trackside Tennis. However, none of our extra-curricular sports can take place without the energy, dedication and expertise of the teaching staff who coach the children and bring them to the games. Many thanks to them for their enthusiasm and commitment to the children. Green Schools, Green Homes Excited r epresentatives of the Green School’s Committee attended An Taisce’s National Green Flag Awards on 21st May, 2015. Bayside Senior School was one of just thirteen schools nationally to successfully complete the two year Green Home Programme this year. It was a most enjoyable event. This special day was thanks to the great work and continued dedication of the pupils, their homes and the whole school community. Celebrations continue with the raising of our new flags at the school’s end of term assembly on 29th June. Thank You There are so many people who help the school run smoothly and we would like to acknowledge their efforts on the school’s behalf and to express our gratitude to them: -‐ v The Board of management for their wise management of school affairs. v PABS for all their assistance over the year and for their valuable fundraising on behalf of the school. v Those parents who helped out with the P arish Confirmation programme. v Those parents who helped with sports. the school and grounds tidy v The caretakers and cleaning staff who keep cross the road safely. v The “lollipop” lady who helps the children v Mrs. Emer O’Connor who did a wonderful job as Acting Principal. We would also like especially to thank the priests of the parish Fr. Paul, Fr. Kit and Fr. Joe. Fr. Paul is the chairperson of our Board of Management and our Parish Priest, Fr. Kit is our school chaplain while Fr. Joe is chaplain of the J unior School. A very special word of thanks to the Treasurer o f the Board of Management, Mrs. Pat every single week of the school year. Hughes, for her huge contribution to the school Another very special thank you is due to our secretary Mrs. Patricia Gleeson who keeps the entire school operating smoothly and deals with all our pupils, colleagues, parents and visitors with constant efficiency, courtesy and k indness. Farewell We say a fond farewell to our Sixth Class pupils and their parents and we say a very special goodbye to the parents and families whose connection with the school ends when their child/children graduate and progress to post primary school. We will always be interested to hear about past pupils. Uniform Please remember our uniform is generic and can be bought anywhere. Please encourage your children to wear it every day. It contributes to a working atmosphere in the school. The uniform is a red polo shirt and grey jumper and trousers or a skirt / pinafore to the knee for the girls. Children can grow quickly so you may have year. In line with the wishes of to replace the skirt or trousers during the parents as ascertained in the uniform survey carried out last year, we would ask parents to have their children wear a pair of black shoes of whatever make so that the uniform is complete. Lately we have been having footwear of many different styles and colours which detracts somewhat from the overall look of the uniform. We do not have a school tracksuit. The children change for P.E. This is part of their Social, Personal and Health education. Texting Could I please ask parents/guardians to ensure that we have an up-‐to-‐date mobile number for our texting service. We are entering the 4th year of our book rental scheme and have kept prices the same as the last three years. Every child who has joined the scheme will receive their covered books in September. I would ask parents to try to ensure that the children keep the books as clean and tidy as possible. In this way we can continue to keep costs down. Helping Those in Need On Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th, the four sixth classes enjoyed outings to St. Anne’s Park, where they participated in art, S.E.S.E. and sports activities. Each child donated a minimum of €2 for the venture. The following day, Friday 19th, the same classes were involved in a cake and bric-a brac sale. These events were organised for educational and altruistic reasons. The children were very anxious to fund-raise for the Nepalese people, in the wake of the recent earthquakes in their country. It is a testament to their generosity and ingenuity that their ventures raised a total of €700. It is wonderful to be able to make such a generous donation to such a worthy cause. Attendance Being at school every day gives a child the best possible chance to succeed in school and to form friendships with his/ her classmates. There are of course times when a child cannot be at school because of illness or some other significant reason. We are delighted to congratulate our pupils who have 100% attendance from the start of the school year to June 25th. National Children’s Choir The Fifth and Sixth classes joined with thousands of children from schools around the country, to sing in the Tallaght Arena concerts, for the National Children’s Choir , at the end of April. Their performance marked the culmination of many months of rehearsing and fine tuning, in preparation for their professional debut! It was a wonderful experience for the children and their families and friends. Sincere and guardians, who supported them so compliments to all those pupils and to you, parents enthusiastically. We, as a staff, were so proud of them all. They were an absolute credit to the heartfelt thanks to the staff for their school and to you, their parents. A special word of commitment and positivity in teaching a very difficult repertoire . Twenty nine of our choir went on to sing in the NCC concert in the Concert Hall on 6th June. It was almost impossible to select that number from such a large group of deserving singers. This year's concerts were of particular significance as they marked the 30th anniversary of the founding of the choir. Those who were chosen will never forget the experience of performing with a professional orchestra in the country’s most prestigious music venue. Hopefully many of you got to see the th RTE news2day feature on the choir on June 8 and the “Nationwide” programme th on Friday 19 June, which profiled the NCC and featured some of our own pupils.
