The name Tiradentes was suggested by Silva Jardim, the most active propagandist of the Republic. In his campaigns, he visited several cities in the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Minas Gerais. While in São João del-Rei, after being attacked by supporters of the monarchy, he gave an enthusiastic speech, as was his style, and threw the idea — Tiradentes. Thus would be named São João del-Rei, honoring a Portuguese king. Then, when still during the provisional government, the named changed, through Decree No. 3, signed on December 6, 1889.
