The program has made significant strides under the direction of Houseman and his staff. Coach Houseman and his staff of Colleen Morse, Ryan Schalk, Brandon Bard and Felicia Smith were honored as the 2010 NFCA National Coaching Staff of the year. “I’ve been blessed to work with some outstanding people. They put in a ton of time and give their hearts to these young women. MCC softball would be nothing without them.” Houseman stated. After qualifying for the NJCAA Region XIITournament in his first three years at the helm, 2010 was a break-out year for the Jayhawk softball program. The Jayhawks won their first MCCAA Western Conference title, MCCAA state tournament, Region XII Regional tournament and the NJCAA Division II National Title. “Last year was incredible for our program. It is really hard to put into words; we had 17 girls that did everything that was asked of them. They competed at a high level all year, both on the field, in the community and in the classroom. To win a National Championship is so special and to do it with this group of young women means so much to me”. MCC has great expectations for the 2011 season. “Obviously coming off a year where we won a National title there could be the feeling of pressure on our kids, but they seem to be handling it really well. This is definitely the most talented group of young ladies that we’ve brought in, so our expectations are where they have always been...HIGH!” said Coach Houseman. Before coming to Muskegon Community College, Coach Houseman held several different coaching positions. He has coached at Muskegon Catholic Central, Muskegon Orchard View and Muskegon High School. He is also the lead instructor for Vortex TPS Top 96 College Coaches Camps. When asked why he thought the program was going in the right direction he answered “We treat this program as if it were a family. We take care of one another and the last thing we worry about is winning games. We feel that if we out-work everyone and do it with character and compassion, we will be rewarded. That means we will be able to stand on a higher stage and know we did it the way we’re supposed to.” Matt also stated “I really feel the girls in the West Michigan area get overlooked. They are good athletes and great workers. We are committed to staying local for the most part. These kids have a lot of pride in this program and will do what it takes.” Coach Houseman not only contributes to the Muskegon Community College softball family, he also contributes to the community as well by working at Extra Innings baseball/softball facility.“That facility is like a diamond in the rough, and without it we could not get as much accomplished as we do.They have been a lot of help to us and we appreciate their support greatly.” Matt is supported at home by his best friend and wife, Heidi, and their four children (Jacob, Emma, Megan, Mattie). They have been life long residents of Muskegon and plan on being here for a long time.
