Convert Video Files with MPEG STREAMCLIP
Using MPEG Streamclip with Final Cut Pro
!
Mpeg Streamclip is a free application that leverages the power of Quicktime and itʼs installed components to
convert a wide variety of video formats and codecs.
!
That being said, the flexibility of the program is dependent upon the applications an plug-ins you have installed on
your system at home. The walk-though below is only applicable fro the systems here at SVA.
Option ONE, single file conversion
1. Open Mpeg Streamclip: Applications>Mpeg StreamClip
a. Then goto: File>Open Files
b. Navigate to the folder that has your
source video and choose a file (this
method only allows one file at a time).
c.
Choose the file you need to convert.
2. Your video will open in a preview window
and while you can use MPEG Streamclip to
trim videos, I recommend you convert/
export the file as is.
3. Now click on File> Export to Quicktime...

4. The next window shows the settings for exporting to edit in FCP.
1
2
Quality
should be
between 80
and 100%
3
For editing, leave the
Frame Size UNSCALED.
This will change
according to the
camera you are using.
Compression should be AppleProRes 422 for
FCP 6
AppleProRes 422LT for FCP 7
(stay away from HQ, Proxy and 4444 no need
for the files that the cameras we have).
4
If you are shooting with
any camera that shots
PROGRESSIVE video
(like 7D, 5DMKii, Nikons)
UNCHECK THESE
BOXES.
5
Make Movie will export
the movie to your drive.
I recommend placing it
into a separate folder
with a NEW NAME so
you know that it is the
converted version.

Option TWO, GROUP file conversion
For converting/exporting several movies, the EXPORT/MAKE MOVIES Settings are the same, but how you get to them is
slightly different.

3
OPEN MPEG Streamclip and go to
List> Batch List
Next, select the files you want to
convert and click To Batch
2
In the next window Select Add Files
4
Select Export to Quicktime
and activate Fix timecode
breaks and Don no skip
any frame if you like.
I havenʼt any problems
NOT using those options,
but some folks have...
doesnʼt seem to hurt,
though.
5
You will now choose a destination folder - pretty self explanatory, but
I DO recommend that you create a folder with a DISTINCT name...
so no “Untitled” or “Videos”.
You might want label the folder something like “Converted monkey
videos 2010” if you filmed monkeys.
6
Once you choose your destination you will see the window for
conversion, so follow the instructions from the previous page.
7
Once you have added your videos
Click Go and go take a walk. Itʼll be a
while.
Voilaʼ done.
