Next week, the archdiocese will take up the
Peter’s Pence Collection, which pr ovides Pope
Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his
charitable works around the world. The proceeds
benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including
victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Join our Holy Father as a
witness of charity to those who are suffering.
The Red Cross Blood Drive is Monday, June 27, from
12pm to 6pm in Loreto Hall. Donors should be 18+
years of age (16 with parental permission).
During the April 25 blood drive there were 103 donors
registered. 16 donors were deferred and 90 units were collected!
We also registered 2 first-time donors!

service and fellowship ministry for singles of the parish ages 40

Our Gospel today, Luke 9:18-24, presents St Luke’s version of the
“Great Confession.” It is the moment when Simon articulates his
belief that Jesus is “the Christ of God.” This was a breakthrough
moment for both Jesus and Simon. For Jesus it was an affirmation
that Simon in particular and the disciples in general had a glimmer
of understanding of who he was. For Simon it was a moment of
insight that would change his life forever. The story is told much
more dramatically in St Matthew’s gospel, Matthew 16:13-20.
Here after Simon declares his faith, Jesus says to him “Blessed are
you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this
to you, but my heavenly father. “Then Jesus does something
astounding, he gives Simon a new name and a new identity. “And
so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my
church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you
bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on
earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
St. Paul tells us in today’s second reading from Galatians 3:26-29
that when we are baptised we have clothed ourselves with Christ.
We are transformed people. We lose our distinctions and we all
become “one in Christ Jesus.” Since long before Jesus walked on
our earth until this very day Orthodox Jewish men begin the day
with a prayer that includes a line thanking God that “You have not
made me a Gentile, a slave or a woman.” St. Paul turned this
notion upside down by declaring that for those clothed with Christ
“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free
person, there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ
Jesus.” So, like Simon when we become followers of Christ
we are changed. Our unity with Christ erases our individual
distinctions, unites us in love and makes us “heirs according to
the promise.”
Today is Father's Day. It is a day set aside for us to honor and
remember our fathers if they have died and to honor and thank our
father’s if they are still with us. The very first place we learn about
God’s love for us is in our homes. The very first people who
demonstrate God’s compassionate love for us are our parents.
Fathers have a special responsibility to make God’s love present to
their families, their communities and to our world. And so on this
day we say a special prayer for all fathers.
God our Father
Bless these men,
that they may find strength as fathers.
Let the example of their faith and love shine forth.
Grant that we, their sons and daughters,
may honor them always
with a spirit of profound respect.

Duodécimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
¿Quién es Jesús?
La pregunta de Jesús en el evangelio de hoy no ha dejado de resonar
desde que él la pronunciara hace dos mil años: "¿quién dice la gente
que soy yo?" Un modo sencillo de comprobar su actualidad es ir a las
librerías y descubrir cómo casi cualquier cosa que se escriba sobre
Jesús despierta interés, así se trate de colecciones de mitos y mentiras, como es el caso del "Código de Da Vinci. La diversidad de
respuestas sugiere la inmensa riqueza interior del misterio de Cristo:
revolucionario y filósofo, reformador social, profeta notable, poeta
extraordinario, líder íntegro y fascinante, amigo entrañable y fiel,
espejo de todas las virtudes, modelo de oración y vida espiritual,
maestro maravilloso, y muchas cosas más. En él vemos cumplidas
las promesas del Antiguo Testamento y en él hallan lugar nuestras
más hondas y legítimas aspiraciones. Hacia él miran las antiguas
profecías y en él tienen su paradigma los reyes. Su lenguaje, su vida
y su sufrimiento lo hacen cercano a todos, de modo que los niños
entienden cuando les habla aunque los más grandes pensadores no
terminarán de sumergirse en la profundidad de su lenguaje. Su belleza no riñe con su vigor; su majestad no disuena frente a su humildad;
su cercanía no le hace menos solemne ni su visible dignidad le aleja
de nosotros. Es santo y compasivo, puro y sin embargo amigo de
pecadores, lleno de ternura y a la vez poseedor de una fortaleza incomparable y un esplendor que deja impotentes a sus adversarios.
Jesús es la gran respuesta y la gran pregunta. Capaz de cuestionar
nuestras seguridades y a la vez de curar nuestros miedos. Es sacerdote y víctima del sacrificio a la vez. Reina desnudo y escarnecido.
Trae la salud pero ha sido herido; es fuente de vida y acepta morir a
manos de criminales; es elocuente incluso cuando calla y muere
proclamando su propia victoria. Su vida es un océano de amor y de
luz; su misterio es fascinante, inagotable y fecundo.
"Es necesario que sufra":
Tal vez la parte más compleja del misterio de Jesucristo se resume en
esas palabras de hoy: "Es necesario que el Hijo del hombre sufra
mucho, que sea rechazado por los ancianos, los sumos sacerdotes y
los escribas." ¿Por qué "necesario"? ¿Por qué esa cruz espantosa, esa
llaga de la lanza que traspasa su pecho y deja expuesto su corazón?
¿Por qué el fuerte tiene que ser así vencido? La primera lectura, del
profeta Zacarías, nos da una clave: "Ellos volverán sus ojos hacia mí,
a quien traspasaron con la lanza; harán duelo como se hace duelo por
el hijo único, y llorarán por él amargamente como se llora por la
muerte del primogénito." La tragedia de Cristo es también parte de su
lenguaje; su cuerpo llagado y expuesto es también la exposición de
aquello que siempre nos hemos negado a ver: el rostro espantoso del
pecado. Como andamos de prisa y dejamos atrás las consecuencias
de nuestras faltas llegamos a creer que no son tan graves y que nuestra propia maldad no es sino "normal."
La Cruz del Señor se levanta delante de nosotros para denunciar esa
"normalidad," esa normalidad con la que mueren tantos y con la que
tantos son excluidos. Pero, más allá, la misma Cruz da una respuesta
insólita a nuestra doble tragedia, la de ser pecadores y la de padecer
las consecuencias del pecado. Esa respuesta brota de sus llagas en
sangre de piedad, perdón y reconciliación. El Resucitado va delante
de nosotros como pastor misericordioso que ha precio de su propia
vida nos ha adquirido para que seamos suyos y para que en la seguridad de su amor que no se extingue tengamos vida perdurable.

The Family: The Sanctuary of Life.
The family is the “Sanctuary of Life” and the
basic and vital cell of society. The Holy Family,
of course, is unique. One member is God, another
is sinless, and the third is a saint.
But the great lesson of today is that although God could have come
into the world in any way he pleased, he chose to become a member of a family, obedient to his earthly parents, and yet totally
devoted to the Heavenly Father’s will, as we all must be.

For the 2015/16 Faith Formation year 1,106 total students were enrolled (631 families total). We need 200+ Catechists to
serve this number of students. Did you know that over 50% of our catechists did NOT have children in the 2015-16 school
year program?? We are so blessed and thankful for their service.
As of May 15 there are 300+ students registered but only a handful of catechists have committed to volunteer. We are
asking for you to prayerfully consider donating your time to volunteer this year. There are opportunities at all skill levels
in areas such as hospitality, teacher aides, classroom and hallway monitors and office aides. Thank you for your prayerful
consideration.
Catechists Are Needed.
