On Monday, May 25th Americans will observe Memorial Day, a United States federal holiday which
commemorates U.S. men and women who died
while in the military service. This holiday was first
enacted to honor Union soldiers of the Civil War.
The traditional observation date is May 30th, a
date chosen because it was not the anniversary of
a battle. After World War I the holiday was expanded to include American casualties of any war
or military action. In 1968 the holiday observance
was moved to the last Monday of May to create a
three day weekend.
On this type of holiday weekend, many people
expect to hear a patriotic hymn when they attend
Sunday Mass. While the Music Ministry joins with
all Americans to honor those who have served our
country, our music selections are guided by liturgical resources. The guidance on secular music in
liturgy originates from the document Musicam
Sacram. This document states that the music selected for a liturgy should be sacred and support
and accompany what is happening in the liturgy,
guided by the abilities of those doing the singing,
without hindering the required active participation
of the people.
Since the guidance is that the music needs to be
sacred, it implies the music should be about our
life with God. The current trend has been to use
songs that are about our relationship with God,
but have a tradition in the national consciousness
like Eternal Father, Strong to Save, also known
as the Navy hymn, and God of Our Fathers,
known as the National hymn. Songs that honor
our homeland and set nationhood as one of God’s
blessings are also popular choices like This is My
Song or America.
This weekend we have chosen America the
Beautiful, #637 as our tribute to all who have
served and to thank God for our wonderful nation.
God Bless America and Happy Memorial Day!
