CHÂTEAU COUTET 2007
AC Barsac, 1er Cru
TASTING NOTE: Offers fascinating
aromas of cooked apple, clove and
honey that follow through to a full body,
with superlively acidity and spicy
blanched almond and honey character
on the palate. Long and powerful,
showing amazing botrytis character,
with so much spice and richness,
yet also freshness. Even better than
the superb 2006. Best after 2015.

1er CRU 2011

TASTING NOTE: The 2011 Morey St.
Denis 1er Cru La Riotte, which comes
from a 0.56-hectare parcel, sports a
pretty, feminine bouquet with light
red cherry, fresh strawberry and dried
rose petal. The palate is mediumbodied with fine tannins and very good
focus. No, there is not the length of a
more benevolent season, but there is
great poise and tension allied with a
directness that would make it a superb
match at the dinner table. Drink

TAUPENOT-MERME MAZOYÈRES
CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU 2011
AC
TASTING NOTE: The 2011
Mazoyeres-Chambertin Grand Cru,
which is populated by 54-year-old
vines with a propensity for small berries
due to millerandage, has a fuller
and more aromatic bouquet when
compared directly against the
Charmes-Chambertin 2011, perfumed
with lascivious ripe strawberry and
cranberry aromas suffused with cold
stone. The palate is medium-bodied
with supple and fine tannins. It has a
pleasant build in the mouth and yet
the finish is understated, classic in style
and very refined. This is just a Mazoyeres that you will want to abscond
with. Drink now-2022. Score: 92

LOUIS JADOT CLOS DE LA ROCHE
GRAND CRU 2010
AC
TASTING NOTE: The 2010 Clos de
la Roche is dark, voluptuous and
seductive. Black cherries, mint, spices
and graphite flesh out on the midpalate and finish. The Clos de la Roche
boasts gorgeous inner sweetness and
perfume, with big, yet fine, tannins that
frame the fruit through to the finish.
The style is rather immediate, but I
don’t see anything wrong with that.

MAISON ROCHE DE BELLENE
CHARMES-CHAMBERTIN 2010
AC
TASTING NOTE: A reserved but quite
pretty and attractively layered nose
speaks of earth, fresh wild red berry
fruit and humus. The mouth feel is
rich, suave and refined thanks in large
part to the fine-grained tannins that
coat the palate on the moderately deep
but well-balanced and strikingly persistent finish. Note that while the tannins may be quite fine, they are dense
and this will certainly require ample
cellar time before it’s completely
ready for prime time. Drink 2025+.

TASTING NOTE: Good deep red. A bit
darker on the nose than the grand
crus from Gevrey-Chambertin, offering
explosive aromas of crushed raspberry,
black cherry, exotic spices and a touch
of smoke. Compellingly rich and seamless in the mouth, with terrific sappy
verve to the urgent flavors of red
berries, minerals and game. The very
long, slowly rising finish boasts outstanding energy and thrust and saturates the mouth with sweet perfume.

BIENVENUES-BÂTARDMONTRACHET GRAND CRU 2010
AC
TASTING NOTE: The 2010 Bienvenues
Batard-Montrachet is a seriously
gorgeous wine. Endless layers of sweet,
perfumed white stone fruits caress
the palate in this utterly impeccable
Burgundy. The 2010 is all about
finesse and class. Light floral, honeyed
notes wrap around the weightless,
gracious finish. The Bienvenues simply
oozes with class, but it also closes
down quickly in the glass. Patience is
the key. Anticipated maturity: 2020.

VAULORENTS CHABLIS 1er CRU
2010
AC
TASTING NOTE: An expansive nose
with a pronounced floral character is
trimmed in soft wood and sea shore
nuances. In contrast to the Montée
de Tonnerre, this is beautifully complex
with fine richness to the mouth coating, round and ultra-refined flavors that
possess a silky mouth feel before
terminating in a balanced, focused and
impressively persistent finish. Lovely
juice. Drink: 2015+. Special designation: Outstanding. Score: 92 (Allen

TASTING NOTE: This also displays
an abundance of classic Chablis
character with iodine, tidal pool and
ripe green fruit aromas that precede
dense, muscular and overtly powerful
flavors that culminate in a salineinfused and impressively persistent
finish where a touch of wood surfaces.
As Bougros typically is, this is a big wine
with almost painful intensity. While
this slightly smoky effort isn’t particularly
refined, it is certainly dramatic and
imposing. Drink: 2018+. Special designation: Don’t Miss! Score: 92-94

TASTING NOTE: The 2010 ChateauFuisse Vieilles Vignes has an entrancing
bouquet with apricot, orange blossom,
cold stone and just a hint of licorice.
The palate is very well-balanced with
a generous aniseed-tinged opening.
There is certainly good weight in the

TASTING NOTE: A brilliant offering
that could easily compete with the
best growers’ Hermitage is the 2010
Hermitage Epsilon. Perhaps the
greatest wine I have ever tasted from
a cooperative, it flirts with perfection.
An inky/black/purple color is accompanied by copious aromas of blackberries, creme de cassis, camphor,
charcoal, white flowers and toasty
oak. Packaged in a heavy duty glass
bottle with a wax capsule, this wine
should be reasonably drinkable in

BAROLO 2008
DOCG
TASTING NOTE: The 2008 Barolo
Albarella is a tasty, fleshy wine
graced with supple red fruit, flowers,
spices and licorice. It shows lovely
mid-palate juiciness and an approachable personality that makes it very
appealing today. The 2008 can be enjoyed with minimum cellaring or aged
for a few years. Sweet rose petals and
spices inform the generous finish.

ERSTE LAGE RIESLING AUSLESE
2010
Gold Capsule, Prädikatswein
(Forstmeister Geltz)
TASTING NOTE: Figure on a good
four decades of high-quality life.
[Owner/winemaker Hanno] Zilliken’s
2010 Saarburger Rausch Riesling
Auslese gold capsule A.P. #4 was,
he assures me, rendered in a volume
closer to what would associate in
normal years with a Spatlese than with
even a regular Auslese. “Here there
was a lot more botrytis, yet the fruit was
lower in acidity” than for the “regular”
Auslesen, he notes by way of among
other things explaining this wine’s
caramel overtones and creaminess of
texture. The nobly fungal, carnal, and
musky notes that characterized the
A.P. #5 are present here in spades,
another obvious legacy of its advanced
botrytization. Ennobled richness of
caramelized peach and mango; concentrated lime and pink grapefruit;
honeysuckle, rowan and orange blossom; as well as creamy and caressing
textural allure improbable for this vintage (and given what is still extremely
high acidity) are here allied to the sort
of transparency to stony, saline,
smoky, and crystalline nuances that
was otherwise achieved in the present
collection only “way back” with the
Spatlese A.P. #8. This finishes with a
shimmering cascade of fruit essences
and mineral matter. I imagine it will
dazzle over the next half century.

BAROLO 2008

TASTING NOTE: The 2008 Barolo
Fossati is my personal favorite thanks
to the stunning aromas that emanate
from this wine. I find those mineral
notes absolutely divine, they are chalky
without being dusty and so finely
etched and chiseled overall. They help
pull the aromas straight up and out
of the glass and are soon followed by
more substantial notes of pressed
blue flower, licorice, cola, tar and dried
ginger. It offers a vertical aromatic

CV CURRICULUM VITAE 2010
DOC Douro
(Quinta Vale D. Maria)
TASTING NOTE: The 2010 CV is the
winery’s celebrated old vines (80+
years) blend, aged in a mixture of
new (75%) and old barriques for 22
months (meaning that this was just
bottled in August, 2012, making it a
big, young puppy). Happily (about a
full point) lower in alcohol than last
year’s version, this is well balanced
while once again being the deepest
wine in the lineup. If it does not quite
seem as fresh and elegant as the
Vale D. Maria, in its own right it is still
rather harmonious and a pleasure to
drink, a wine that makes its bones
with balance and concentration (relative to the vintage) rather than sweetness and power. It should become a
remarkably graceful CV in time. It is a
bit oak tinged at the moment, but
that should be absorbed well. This is
super and I think it is a big success,
especially in the context of this vintage. It should be approachable
young, but of course it will benefit
from a few years in the cellar to allow
it to develop some expressiveness. It
tightens noticeably with air. There
were 6,000 bottles produced, plus
some large format bottles. Drink

ALVARO PALACIOS FINCA DOFÍ
2011
DOCa Priorat
TASTING NOTE: The 2011 Finca Dofi
is a blend of 95% Garnacha and 5%
Syrah. It has another exuberant bouquet, like the older sister of the 2011
Gatrallops, endowed with beautifully
defined floral aromas. There are
hints of broom and fennel infusing the
scintillating red fruit and a sorbet-like
freshness. The palate is medium-bodied
with a vibrant peppery entry, fanning
across the mouth with succulent red
currant and wild strawberry fruit.
The acidity maintains superb balance,
countering the 14.8% alcohol with
ease. There is a firm underlying structure that is only exposed towards
the long persistent, mineral-rich finish.

(Bacio Divino Cellars)
TASTING NOTE: This is a stunning
example of modern-day Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s soft, complex,
smooth and sweet, with a veneer of
smoky, caramelized oak coating the
flavors of ripe blackberry, black
cherry and crème de cassis. It’s really
delicious, and made all the more
appealing by a fine structure of tannins

STONESTREET BEAR POINT
CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2009
Alexander Valley, Sonoma County
TASTING NOTE: The 2009 Cabernet
Sauvignon Bear Point comes across as
dark and brooding. Espresso, graphite,
blackberries, cassis and spices emerge
from the glass as this dense, opaque
Cabernet Sauvignon shows off its pedigree. Layers of expressive perfume
are woven throughout the fruit in this
open, relatively accessible Cabernet.
This is another terrific effort from Stonestreet and winemaker Graham Weerts.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2009
Stags Leap District, Napa Valley
TASTING NOTE: The 2009 Cabernet
Sauvignon Hillside Select is deep,
racy and layered from the very first
taste. A large-scaled, sumptuous wine,
the 2009 impresses for its exceptional
balance and pure pedigree. There is
plenty of flesh here, but also more than
enough tannin to help balance some
of the wine’s more overt tendencies. A
dazzling, utterly vivid finish rounds
things out in style. This large-scaled,
voluptuous Cabernet Sauvignon

KOPKE COLHEITA PORT 1975

TASTING NOTE: This is a lovely
Colheita, gentle, yet complex and very
graceful, with a powerful nose in
the background, bright acidity and
considerable charm. It finishes
sweet and richer than the mid-palate
initially suggests as it has those concentrated flavors I adore in Colheitas.
It gather[s] steam and manages
to deliver intensity and concentration
while remaining elegant and balanced, with some brandy-laced bursts
of acidity dancing around. The good
acidity gives it a lively feel, but ultimately what makes this a beauty
is the combination of harmony and
intensity, as odd as that sounds.
There is some tannic pop on the finish
at times, too. It covers all the bases,
assertive without being obvious. The
more I drank this, the more I liked
it. At the price, it is a rather nice deal.

TASTING NOTE: This opens with the
powerful aromatics, promising dense
and concentrated juice, that makes me
adore mature Colheitas so much. This
is what it is all about at this end of the
scale. Juicy and sweet on the long
finish, it has bursts of enlivening acidity
and some portents of elegance to
come, but it is the dark, brandy-laced
nuance on the finish with intense
notes of molasses, bitter chocolate and
treacle that helped make it special.
Its very dark feel was nicely cut by the
acidity, making it surprisingly sunny
at times with actual hints of elegance.
This is very fine, complex, sturdy and
quite spry for a 60 year old. Despite
the concentration and power, it
still seems quite elegant as it comes

HIGHLAND PARK 30 YEARS OLD
ORKNEY ISLANDS SINGLE MALT
TASTING NOTE: An exemplary Highland Park. There’s certainly plenty of
sherry influence in this whisky and it
is complementary. (About 2/3 of the
whisky was aged on sherry casks, and
a lot of these casks were second fill.)
The whisky enjoys a delicious foundation of toffee, fruit (lemon, plum,
blueberries) and dark chocolate. It
continues to develop and evolve
on the palate, with emerging notes of
heather, nougat, lavender, delicate
peat and complex dried spice (especially cinnamon and nutmeg) to
balance the sweeter notes. The extra
alcohol is also a bonus, providing a
drying balance to the whisky’s sweetness. Whiskies like this one remind
me why I fell in love with whisky in the
first place. Score: 94 (John Hansell,

aromatics are lovely, a touch spicy and
mildly sweet in a tropical fruit manner; following seven minutes of further
aeration the bouquet becomes deeper
as the oak enters the equation, lending
weight to the delicately sweet aroma
that also features honey and beeswax.
It’s in the mouth that Triomphe triumphs; the palate entry is sinewy, sweet
with overtones of marzipan and light
caramel; at midpalate the taste profile
highlights the oaky vanilla and honey

2006, a blend of 63% Cabernet
Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the rest
Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc,

raspberry and black currant fruit
intermixed with subtle notes of scorched earth and barbecue spices.

be well worth following for 10-12 years,
and that it will also probably long
since have become more expressive
than it was when I tasted it, a mere
two weeks after bottling. Although this
comes from some of the estate’s oldest,
lowest-yielding vines and tiniest-berried
selections as well as an ostensibly
top site, it managed to stay just below
13% alcohol, presumably a tribute to
the genetic material of this selection,
though in part also due to conscious
effort on the Ratzenbergers’ part to
manage pruning and canopy so as to
promote ripe flavors at moderate levels
of grape sugar. There are, incidentally,
around 2,500 bottles of this, which is
nowadays at the high end for production of a Ratzenberger Grosses
Gewachs. Score: 91+ (David Schildknecht, erobertparker.com,

MONTEVETRANO 2010
IGT Colli di Salerno
TASTING NOTE: The 2010 Montevetrano is flat-out gorgeous. Vibrant,
floral aromatics lead to layers of beautifully delineated fruit in this finely
sculpted chiseled Montevetrano. A wine
of extraordinary beauty, the 2010
impresses for its clarity and nuance. I
don’t think I have ever tasted a young
Montevetrano with this much pure silkiness and finesse. There is a level of
precision and delineation in the 2010
that is truly marvelous. I can’t wait
to see how it ages. The 2010 is also
notable for a much higher percentage
of Aglianico (30%) than has been common in the past, while the international
varieties are less prominent in the
blend. In 2010 Montevetrano is 40%
Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Aglianico
and 20% Merlot, which means the
Cabernet Sauvignon now plays a
much smaller role in the blend. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.

CENTOMOGGIA CASAVECCHIA
2010
IGT Terre del Volturno
TASTING NOTE: The undisputed highlight among these new releases, the
2010 Casavecchia Centomoggia saturates the palate with the blackest of
cherries, plums, tar, melted asphalt and
licorice. Initially quite dark and brooding, the Centomoggia turns a bit more
floral with time in the glass. The quality
of this fruit appears inherently better
suited to aging in oak than some of
the other wines in this range. At times,
the Centomoggia reminds me of a
Barolo from Serralunga for its power,
darkness and weight. In its best vintages, the Centomoggia is a wine of
sheer pedigree and complexity.
Another year or two in bottle will help

2008 is at once light on its feet yet rich,
deep and resonant, expressing the
myriad contradictions that are at the

ROBERTO VOERZIO CEREQUIO
BAROLO 2008
DOCG
TASTING NOTE: The 2008 Barolo
Cerequio comes across as dark,
powerful and rich. Black cherries,
leather, spices, licorice and tar are
some of the nuances that take shape
in this intense Cerequio. Here, too,
the flavors are dark and brooding. With
time in the glass, the Cerequio turns
suave, polished and elegant, all qualities
that are typical of this site, but the
2008 never fully drops its sheer muscle.
The 2008 remains big, powerful and
structured. A finessed finish covers
every inch of the palate with small
bursts of energetic dark red fruit. This
is another drop-dead gorgeous wine

BORGOGNO BAROLO 2006

TASTING NOTE: The 2006 Barolo is
the finest young, straight Barolo I have
tasted from Borgogno in a long time,
maybe ever. It embodies everything
that Barolo is, from the mysterious
bouquet to the mid-weight expression
of fruit to the firm yet regal tannins.
This is simply gorgeous juice. A sensual
melange of sweet dark cherries and
leather lead to freshly cut roses, tar and
licorice in this deceptively mediumbodied wine. It reminds me of the Baroli
I tasted as a young person, the wines
that taught me the breadth that only

its clean evolutionary path. By the way,
the 2008 vintage was not produced,
so 2007 is what you still find on the

was changed from Pergola to Guyot

orange that effortlessly embraces the
oak. The palate is medium-bodied
with svelte, succulent tannins, the oak
playing a complementary role (in
my opinion, the use of larger barrels
moderating their influence.) It is
struck through with outstanding acidity and wonderful minerality toward

TASTING NOTE: Even darker and
showing more smoked black fruits,
coffee, and spiced meat like characteristics, the 2007 Core Elevation
Sensation Alta Mesa 42-Months is
a beauty! Round, mouth filling, and
dense, with brilliant purity of fruit
and a chewy, broad finish, this needs
2-3 years of bottle age and should
shine for 10-12 years. Score: 93+

Dec. 2011)

TASTING NOTE: Bright, saturated
ruby-red. Vibrant nose offers cassis,
minerals, gunpowder and spices.
Densely packed but nicely delineated,
with primary, fruit-driven flavors of
blackcurrant and spices. Very juicy and
suave but still quite youthfully unevolved. Finishes with firm but smooth
tannins. This calls for considerably
more patience than the Napa Valley
bottling, but even today there’s a
pleasing pliancy of texture. This held
up extremely well in the recorked
bottle. Score: 93 (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, Jan./Feb. 2006)

WHITE WINE
MERRY EDWARDS
SAUVIGNON BLANC 2012
Russian River Valley, Sonoma County
Wines from this small, iconic boutique
winery are not often available in our
market. The Merry Edwards Sauvignon
Blanc routinely earns scores in excess
of 90 points from Wine Spectator and
has appeared in their Top 100 four
times since 2005. The 2012 has not yet
been reviewed, but Merry Edwards
has commented upon the quality of this
vintage, which stands out excitingly
even in the face of so many great vintages for her Sauvignon Blanc. The
2012 is sourced from vines 25-35 years
old and includes 20% Sauvignon
Musqué, which provides even greater
aromatics and depth. In 2013, Merry
was inducted into the Culinary Institute
of America's Vintners Hall of Fame,
and became only the fourth woman to
win the James Beard Award for Best
Wine, Beer or Spirits Professional in the
United States. Not a bad way to celebrate one’s 40th year as a winemaker.

QUINTA DO NOVAL
VINTAGE PORT 2003
DOC Douro
TASTING NOTE: What a nose. Ripe
fruit, with chocolate, blackberries
and raisins. Full-bodied and medium
sweet, with velvety tannins. Finish
goes on and on. Layered and wonderful. Best after 2014. Score: 96
(James Suckling, winespectator.com,
Dec. 23, 2005)
PORT
QUINTA DO NOVAL NACIONAL
VINTAGE PORT 2011
DOC Douro
TASTING NOTE: The Quinta do
Noval Nacional 2011 is one of the most
breathtaking, nascent Vintage Ports
that I have ever met. The label should
state a health warning: – “Sensory
Overload” – since the bouquet is endowed with copious dark berry fruit,
minerals, bay leaf and cloves that manifests like a slow-motion explosion
from the glass. The palate is velvetysmooth on the entry, but do not let
that kid you. Wave after wave of intense
ripe black fruit lap along your sensory
shoreline – indescribably harmonious
with extremely well-judged acidity.
There is a crescendo of flavors that
build towards a sensual, date and
raisin-tinged, magisterial finish that I
can only analogize to the dramatic
E-major chord that concludes The
Beatles’ “A Day In The Life.” In fact,
Lennon & McCartney’s magnum opus
probably sums up the 2011 Nacional
better than any descriptor I can think
of. Tasted May 2013. Score: 98-100

TAYLOR FLADGATE
VINTAGE PORT 2000
Btld. 2002, DOC Douro
Wine Enthusiast (in 2007) and Wine
Spectator (in 2003) gave this Port
scores of 95 and 96, respectively.
TASTING NOTE: Among the most
saturated blue/purple/black-colored
examples of the vintage, Taylor’s
2000 tastes like a young vintage of
Chateau Latour on steroids. Aromas
of graphite, blackberry liqueur, creme
de cassis and smoke jump from the
glass. Spectacularly concentrated and
enormously endowed, with sweetness
allied to ripe tannin, decent acidity, and
layer upon layer of fruit and extract,
this is the leading candidate for the port
of the vintage. Anticipated maturity:
2010-2040. Score: 98 (Robert
Parker Jr., erobertparker.com,
Oct. 2002)

TASTING NOTE: Gorgeous, featuring
a core of creamed peach, persimmon,

flashes of green tea, dried papaya
and mango. Lush and refined, with
accents of blood orange and mouthwatering spice echoing on the finish.
Muscat de Frontignan. Drink now

GLENMORANGIE EALANTA
19 YEARS OLD HIGHLAND
SINGLE MALT
Glenmorangie is one of the most
recognized names in whisky, and their
name has been associated with the
production of premium quality Scotch
since their official founding in 1843 –
though the reputation of (what was then
known as) Morangie whisky stretches
back, beyond the limits of what can be
called strictly legal production, to the
1700s. The Ealanta is the fourth of
Glenmorangie's Private Edition range.
This 19-years-old was matured in new
American white oak casks. Ealanta
translates from Scottish Gaelic to 'skilled
and ingenious,' a fitting title for such
a classic and storied dram. The Ealanta
will deliver notes of vanilla, toffee,
orange peel, clove and ginger.

MARCH 2014
LAPHROAIG 25 YEARS OLD ISLAY
SINGLE MALT
TASTING NOTE: The clean – almost
prim and proper – fruit appears to
have somehow given a lift to the iodine
character and accentuated it to maximum effect. The result is something
much younger than the label demands
and not immediately recognisable as
Islay, either. But no less dangerously
enticing...The grapes ensure the peat
is met by a salivating palate; particularly
impressive is the way the sweet peat
slowly finds its footing and spreads
beautifully; no shortage of cocoa: a
kind of peaty fruit and nut chocolate
bar...like the 27-y-o, an Islay which
doesn’t suffer for sherry involvement.
Very different from a standard, bourbon barrel-aged Laphroig with much
of the usual complexity reined in,
though its development is first class.
This one’s all about effect – and it
works a treat! Score: 94 (Jim Murray,
Whisky Bible, 2013)
