Greetings to Everyone,
Summer is winding down and that means SOS Fall Migration is right around the corner.
There are a lot of great bands and DJ`s to enjoy and also Fun Sunday and Fun Monday
events. Don`t forget the party at Pirate`s Cove on September 24 from 1-5 pm and the CFSC
cookout on Saturday, September 26 at the Tilghman Resort`s oceanside pool. The October
10 regular CFSC meeting will be held at the Shrine Club with Fred Rouse as our DJ. The
Nominating Committee will be presenting a slate of nominees for officers and at large
board members for 2016 and in addition nominations will be taken from the floor, so
please plan to attend the October meeting. We are pleased to announce that Rick Strickland
and Lesa Hudson will be performing at the November 14 CFSC meeting along with Eddie
Baker as our DJ; more details to follow. Plans are underway for the “Putting on the Hits”

The “Godfather of Shag” Danced His Way Into Our Hearts
Edmon "Eddie" Ellis Monsour, 81, of Fayetteville, passed away Friday, June 26,2015 surrounded by
his beloved family.
He was born September 16, 1933, in Chadbourn, NC to Mary Solomon Monsour and James Ellis
Monsour. He was married to Kathryn Najim Monsour who was his faithful partner in life, love, music,
and dance. Destined to be together since their teenage years, they were united in marriage for 53
years.
Eddie's love of music and dance has followed him throughout his life. Affectionately known as the
"Godfather of Shag", he began his dance career in the late 1940's in those places immortal in shag
history such as Williams Lake, White Lake, Myrtle Beach, and Ocean Drive, SC. He was one of the
founders of the Fayetteville Area Shag Association in 1984 and proudly served as president in 1984
and 1985. Eddie was a member of the Beach Shagger's Hall of Fame in 1986 and he served as
Master of Ceremonies for 9 years. He was a National Living Legend in Virginia Beach, Chairman of the Hall of Fame Foundation, involved
with the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs, and a Shagging icon in 2005. He recently received the Promotion of Shag Award from the
National Shag Dance Championship. His support and active participation in the shag world are legendary.
Eddie's proudest accomplishment was being one the founders of the Hall of Fame Foundation, which he chaired for 15 years. The HOF is
a charity that benefits people connected to the shag and beach music. He was truly one who lived up the organization's motto, "Friends
Caring For Friends." He was a friend to all and never met a stranger. He would light up a room with his infectious smile. If the measure of
a man were counted in the memories of the people that he touches, the sum of Eddie Monsour would match a King's ransom. “I had a good
run,” Eddie Monsour wanted us to know on this day at tiny St. Michael Archangel Catholic Church, where family and friends, and shaggers,
too, would come t bid farewell to a life that touched so many with heartfelt generosity for others, and no matter their walk in life, according
to the Fayetteville Observer.

The ‘King of Shag” and co-owner of iconic North Myrtle Beach nightspot Fat Harold’s Beach Club and
one of two men responsible for the shag being named the state dance of South Carolina died at 2
p.m. Friday, his business partner said. Harold Bessent, 82, died after a long period of declining health,
said Harold Worley, who co-founded the club with Bessent in the 1980s.
“He was a real humanitarian,” Worley said. “He never met a stranger.” Bessent was a quiet, but significant contributor to Camp Kemo, a facility for children with terminal cancer, near Columbia, said Shannon Briggs, the North Myrtle Beach
Club’s manager for 18 years. She said he earned a national award for the millions of dollars he raised for the camp and was a member of
the Shriner’s Millionaire Club because of the money he donated to the care of sick children.
Briggs said Bessent had a grandson who died of cancer. Bessent and his sister, who lives in Chapin, were separated as children, Briggs
said, although she wasn’t sure why. She was raised in Conway and he grew up with relatives in Little River.
“He kept the shag alive,” Briggs said of another of Bessent’s passions. The dance was the centerpiece of Fat Harold’s and was an annual
Grand Strand celebration after Bessent co-founded the Society of Stranders in the early 1980s.
Bessent appeared in the movie “Shag,” which starred Bridget Fonda, and was filmed at the Spanish Galleon, which Bessent co-owned
before selling it to Worley in 1980. Bessent’s authorized biography, “Fat Harold, The Legendary King of Shag,” was published in 2012. “He
lived for the shag,” Briggs said.
