I attended the Colorama color class on Monday, July 11th, I really enjoyed the class and
the company. Thank you for letting me crash your activity for awhile.
Thank you so much to everyone who donates their time, talent or help supply our wish
list. We could not do it without YOU.
Seniors who stay active physically, mentally and socially add greatly to the quality of
their lives.
Enjoy the rest of the summer,
Kathy

Who is Judge Conover?
Chess & Checkers
Friday, 11:30 a.m.
Judge John Conover recently retired after serving for
twenty-two years as Davison’s District Court Judge. His
jurisdiction, ranging from small rural communities to the high
crime areas of Genesee County, has given him first-hand
involvement from farm animal disputes to child torture and murder
cases. Because of his wonderful sense of humor, quick wit and
wisdom in dispensing tough but fair rulings, he became a muchloved judge, speaker, and community activist. Now he has added
“author” to that list with his recently published book, “Off Balance.”
Cribbage
Wednesday, 12:30 p.m.
Double Deck Pinochle
Monday, 12:30 p.m.
Friday, 12:30 p.m.
Euchre
Monday & Thursday, 12:30 p.m.
Friday, 7:00 p.m.
What is your book, “Off Balance”, about?
Off Balance is a collection of about 175
funny anecdotal stories that happened in Judge
Conover’s courtroom, and a few from his 20
previous years as a lawyer. These are all true stories and , as
such, many are wrapped around a poignant event that is unhappy.
However, there is always an off-balance twist that brings out the
hilarious.
If you really analyze what makes people laugh (the TV
show “Funniest Home Videos” comes to mind), humor is almost
always based on an underlying sad story. As human beings, we are
blessed with an ability to laugh at ourselves, and even Judge
Conover is often the target of the humor in Off Balance.

facilitated by the AARP Foundation is looking
for new volunteers. We assist tax payers

with numbers and interested in helping people, this can be a very
rewarding opportunity to volunteer and give back to the
community.
You can find out more about the program by visiting our website at
aarp.org/taxaide. In addition, if you let the
folks know at the front desk that you might
be interested, one of our current
volunteers will be more than happy to talk
with you about the program and to answer
any questions you might have.

We Need Helpers for
Commodities Day!
Seniors Helping Seniors
The national trend of “aging
in place” is relevant as local seniors
are choosing to remain in their
homes longer, therefore seeking
services as alternatives to long-term care facilities. One problem
facing seniors who wish to “age in place” is social isolation. When
seniors lose their partner, friends, and often the ability to drive,
they may develop feelings of loneliness or depression.
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)
volunteers are addressing this issue in Genesee, Lapeer and
Shiawassee County by helping seniors stay in their homes longer.
RSVP, sponsored by the Valley Area Agency on Aging, is a program
under the umbrella of Senior Corps and is the largest senior
volunteer program in the Nation. RSVP volunteers support seniors
who wish to remain independent by providing friendly visits or a
few hours of relief to a caregiver of a homebound senior.
RSVP is currently seeking compassionate volunteers at
least 55 years of age to participate in the “Aging in Place” initiative
to help keep seniors living in the community as long as possible.
Volunteers who enroll in RSVP will qualify for assistance with fuel
costs, set their own schedule, and may choose from many
volunteer options including: Respite and Companionship, friendly
visits to the homebound and seniors living in facilities, assist at
area food pantries and soup kitchens, transport seniors to medical
appointments, assist in classrooms and much, much more.
Call RSVP for more details on how you can begin making a
difference in Genesee, Lapeer and Shiawassee Counties today!
For more information on this program call VAAA
@ 810-239-7671 or visit website at
