Kathy’s Connection~
Hello Friends,
What a beautiful time of year. The leaves are so abundant and colorful. November is always the
time of year that I am more observant of what I am thankful for. We are reminded of Veterans
Day where men & women have fought and are still fighting for our freedom. The Thanksgiving
holiday, I tend to feel overwhelmed by the blessing we have received. I am truly blessed for
having such a healthy family that loves me, a wonderful efficient staff, the ability to work with
such talented individuals at the Office of Senior Services, the County Commissioners, the local
municipalities that support us in so many ways, our two boards the Authority and the Advisory
who offer so much input and valuable information. I enjoy and am grateful to be able to serve all
of our valued senior citizens that I come in contact in one way or another. THANK YOU for
your trust in me to serve you to the best of my ability.
It is hard to believe but it is time to start discussing Senior Winter Games. If you are new to
these events please ask a staff member for more info. Applications are available in the front
office. If you would like to volunteer at an event please let me know. There will be an
informational meeting to help you decide what event you would like to assist us in. February
will be here before you know it, “LET THE GAMES BEGIN.”
DID YOU KNOW?
Double Deck Pinochle is now played on Monday’s at 12:30 in addition to the Friday afternoon
program. Our lunch program on Monday – Friday at noon is also a wonderful way to also
socialize with other people. Thank you to our lunch crew that serves and does setup and clean up
on a daily basis. If you are interested in having lunch with a great group of people, please call by
1:00 p.m. the day before. I know it is a little early to send this notice out BUT I want to remind
everyone that if the Davison School District is closed due to BAD WEATHER our Senior
Center is closed also. Watch TV 12 and Channel 25 for updates.
The Meditation Program on Thursday evenings at 6:00 p.m. is a wonderful way to help your
body and mind relax and wind down from your busy and hectic days, I look forward to attending
it when I can.
Thank you for your continued support,
Kathy

A part of Senior Corps, the Retired & Senior
Volunteer Program (RSVP) is America’s largest
volunteer network for people 55 and over, with more
than 500,000 volunteers helping in their own
communities nationwide. With RSVP, you can
apply the skills and wisdom you’ve acquired
throughout your life to make a positive difference in
the lives of others. You choose how and where you
want to serve, how much time you want to give, and
whether you want to share the skills you have or
develop new ones.
RSVP matches volunteers with local
organizations, giving you countless opportunities in
your community to make an impact where it’s
needed most, such as:
• Respite for caregivers who need to take breaks
from caring for loved ones
• Transportation to and from medical
appointments for seniors
• Mentoring in area schools, Food delivery and
food pantry support, Much, much, more!
Giving Back is Good for You, Too!
Research shows that older Americans who
volunteer live longer and report better health.
Volunteering can also lead to more friendships and a
more positive attitude!

assignments
• Excess auto liability insurance
• Supplemental life insurance while you’re in
service

Suggestion Box at the Center…
We had a few suggestion in our
suggestion box this last month!
•
•
To offer the following trips—Blake’s Orchard,
Frankenmuth & Turkeyville. Answer-We have
offered these trips or trips like these trips in the
past and did not get enough people signed up to
go. It takes 56 people to fill a bus. Our trip
companies have tried combining with other
senior centers to make these trips a go and we
still had to cancel. It takes a lot of work on their
part booking these trips, and for them to keep
cancelling they will not offer them.
To offer an I-Pad Class. Answer– Our Director
is trying to find someone to teach this class here
so we can offer it at our Senior Center for a
reasonable price.

Did You Know...What is Osteoporosis?
According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, osteoporosis is a disease of the bones. It happens when you lose too
much bone, make too little bone or both. As a result, your bones become weak and may break from a minor fall or, in
serious cases, even from simple actions, like sneezing or bumping into furniture.
Osteoporosis means “porous bone”. If you look at healthy bone under a microscope, you will see that parts of it look like
a honeycomb. If you have osteoporosis, the holes and spaces in the honeycomb are much bigger than they are in healthy
bone. This means your bones have lost density or mass and that the structure of your bone tissue has become abnormal.
As you bones become less dense, they also become weaker and more likely to break. If you’re age 50 or older and have
broken a bone, talk to your doctor or other health care provider and ask if you should have a bone density test.
Osteoporosis is Common ~ About 54 million Americans have osteoporosis and low bone mass, placing them at
increased risk for osteoporosis. Studies suggest that approximately one in two women and up to one in four men age 50
and older will break a bone due to osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is Serious ~ Breaking a bone is a serious complication of osteoporosis, especially when you’re older.
Broken bones due to osteoporosis are most likely to occur in the hip, spine and wrist, but other bones can break too.
Broken bones can cause severe pain that may not go away. Osteoporosis also causes some people to lose height. When
osteoporosis causes the bones of the spine, called vertebrae, to break or collapse, it affects your posture and causes you to
become stooped or hunched.
Osteoporosis may even keep you from getting around easily and doing the things you enjoy, which may bring feelings of
isolation or depression. It can also lead to other health problems. Twenty percent of senior who break a hip die within
one year from problems related to the broken bone itself or surgery to repair it. Many of those who survive need longterm nursing home care.
Osteoporosis is Costly ~ Osteoporosis is responsible for 2 million broken bones and $19 million in related costs every
year. By 2025, experts predict that osteoporosis will be responsible for approximately three million fractures and $25.3
billion in costs each year. Osteoporosis can sneak up on you! Osteoporosis is often called a silent disease because
you can’t feel your bones getting weaker. Breaking a bone is often the first sign that you have osteoporosis or you may
notice that you are getting shorter or your upper back is curving forward. If you are experiencing height loss or you spine
is curving, be sure to talk to your doctor or another healthcare professional right away as the disease may be already be
advanced.
Are you at Risk? ~ There are a variety of factors—both controllable and uncontrollable—that put you at risk for
developing osteoporosis. It is important to talk with your healthcare provider about your risk factors for osteoporosis and
together you can develop a plan to protect your bones.
A women’s risk of breaking a hip due to osteoporosis is equal to her risk of breast, ovarian and uterine cancer combined.
And a man age 50 or older is more likely to break a bone due to osteoporosis than he is to get prostate cancer.
Uncontrollable Risk Factors ~ Being Female, being over age 50, menopause, family history of osteoporosis, low body
weight/being small and thin & broken bones or height loss.
Controllable Risk Factors ~ Not getting enough calcium & vitamin D, not eating enough fruits & vegetables, getting
too much protein, sodium & caffeine, having an inactive lifestyle, smoking, drinking too much alcohol, losing weight.
There are also medications & diseases that can cause bone loss and increase your risk of osteoporosis.
Prevention and Health Living ~ Osteoporosis and the broken bones it can cause are not part of normal aging. There
is a lot you can do to protect you bones throughout your life. You’re never too young or too old to improve the health of
your bones. Osteoporosis prevention should begin in childhood. But it shouldn’t stop there. Whatever your age, the
habits you adopt now can affect your bone health for the rest of your life. Now is the time to take action.
What can you do to protect your bones?
•
•
•
