Many Thanks
The family of Alice Kesterson would like
to thank our special friends and neighbors
in Pennbrooke for the kind words, prayers
and food during Alice’s illness and her
passing. We would also like to thank her
“Card Playing Ladies” for the meal they
prepared for us on Saturday. Pennbrooke
is a special place to live. Thank you for everything.
—Bob Kesterson
To All our Pennbrooke Friends
“The things that matter most in our lives are not fantastic or grand. They are the moments when we touch
one another, when we are there in the most attentive
or caring way.”
—Jack Kornfield
Thank you for all your support, cards, friendship in
the loss of my husband, Vince Miller.

In addition to having a
NOAA weather radio for getting alerts on approaching
storms, there is another system you should know about.
It is Lake County’s emergency notification system and is
called AlertLake. You will receive emergency notifications
from this system on your landline phone letting you know
about situations requiring your urgent action whether they
are weather-related or other types of emergencies.
You can register with this system so you will also receive
alerts to your cell phone and/or e-mail. This may be very useful
if you are ‘out-and-about’ —away from home. To register for
this system, visit http://lake.emtel911.com/reg/ and click the
“register” box under General Public Registration. There is no
cost and you only have to do this once.

BOGGY CREEK GANG
NEEDLECRAFTERS
On June 13th we delivered 21 afghans to Camp Boggy Creek. Thanks to all the ladies who donated their
time to make them. As usual they were beautiful and
soft and cozy and unique and wonderful and ….
Now I’m pleased to confess that I made an error in
April when I reported that we delivered 27 afghans in
March. I have to add to that number. On just about the
day we were going to Camp Boggy Creek, I was notified that an acquaintance of one of our groups wanted
to add some afghans she had made to our delivery. Of
course, I said, “wonderful” and arranged to get them.
She had 20 beautiful afghans! Along with a few other
last minute pieces, the total delivered was brought to
51. We should all be proud of these women who use
their talents to make these lovely (and loving) contributions in the name of Pennbrooke Fairways.
Our group of needle crafters has decided to make a
trip to Camp Boggy Creek in the beginning of November. We’ve been invited to tour the facility and on the
return we’ll be going to a restaurant to have lunch together. If anyone is interested
in joining us, please give me
a call. And once more, a great
big Thank You to all the ladies
who have donated afghans.
Remember everyone; we always need yarn—please and
please again.

E-MAIL VIRUS GOING AROUND
I thought you would want to know about this e-mail virus.
Even the most advanced programs from Norton or McAfee cannot take care of this one...It appears to affect those who were
born prior to 1955.
SYMPTOMS:
1. Causes you to send the same e-mail twice. Done that!
2. Causes you to send a blank e-mail! That too!
3. Causes you to send e-mail to the wrong person. Yep!
4. Causes you to send it back to the person who sent it to you.
Aha!
5. Causes you to forget to attach the attachment. Well darn!
6. Causes you to hit “SEND” before you’ve finished. Oh no, not
again!
7. Causes you to hit “DELETE” instead of “SEND.” And I just
hate that!
8. Causes you to hit “SEND” when you should “DELETE.” Oh
No!
IT IS CALLED THE “C-NILE VIRUS.”
Have I already sent this to you? Or did you send it to me?

IT’S
SUMMER
TIME
PENNBROOKE FAIRWAYS
THE PENNBROOKE SINGERS...
Gearing Up for Their Fall 2013 Season
WOW!! Where is the summer going? Time seems
to be speeding by. Following our 2013 Spring
Concert, the music committee met to vote on
which pieces of music to rehearse for our 2013
Fall Concert. That is always a fun occasion in which
all members wishing to participate in the process
meet for 2 hours at our director’s home to sight-read
approximately 35 pieces of music and to vote on their favorites
to be included in the rehearsals beginning in September. That is
always a “rapid fire” event and is accompanied by much joking,
laughter and musical “stretching”. A GREAT time was had by all!
The members of the chorus who remain here during the
summer received a special invitation to provide part of the music
during the wedding of chorus member, Tom Bramble, and his
fiancée, Geri O’Donnell. Tom has been an active member of the
chorus for seven years and Geri has attended many of our “out
of Pennbrooke” appearances over the last few years. We were
so pleased to be asked to perform, and rehearsals for their music
began in early July.
The members of the Executive Board of the Pennbrooke
Singers have had a busy summer as they have been actively
involved in a major reorganization of the responsibilities assumed
by officers and committee chairmen. Our sincerest thanks to
them for taking their time and energy to update our organizational
policies and procedures. It has been a substantial undertaking.
Our “Singers’ ” year always begins and ends with a business
meeting. The upcoming Business Meeting will take place on
Monday, September 9th at 4:00pm in the Grand Hall.
Our First Rehearsal will be on:
Friday, September 13th from 2:00–3:00pm in the Grand Hall.
Our General Rehearsal Schedule will be as follows:
Mondays...Tenor/Bass Sections Rehearsal: 4–4:30pm
Full Chorus Rehearsal: 4:30–5:30pm
Soprano/Alto Sections Rehearsal: 5:30–6pm
Fridays......Full Chorus Rehearsal: 2–3pm
In addition, we will be having a “Meet and Greet” event for
chorus members on Sunday afternoon, September 15th. More
information will be given in the September issue of “News &
Views”.
Chorus members should check their e-mail near the end of
August for the full 2013–2014 rehearsal schedule. All rehearsals
take place in the Grand Hall, unless announced otherwise.
If you are interested in joining in our musical adventures, please
call Pat Shockey (787-3003) or JoAnn Jones (787-9576) for
more information, and to let us know of your interest. It is not
mandatory that you be back to Pennbrooke Fairways by early
September to participate in this fall’s activities. However, if you
are new to our group, the sooner that you can join us, the easier
you will find the process of “getting up to speed.” We hope that
you will find this opportunity enticing, and we guarantee that you
will find participating both fun and rewarding!

PENNBROOKE FAIRWAYS
GENTLE THOUGHTS FOR TODAY!
The older you get, the tougher it is
to lose weight, because by then your
body and your fat have gotten to be
really good friends.
The easiest way to find something
lost around the house is to buy a replacement.
Did you ever notice: The Roman
Numerals for forty (40) are XL.
Aging: Eventually you will reach
a point when you stop lying about
your age and start bragging about it.
Some people try to turn back their
odometers. Not me, I want people
to know ‘why’ I look this way. I’ve
traveled a long way and some of the
roads weren’t paved.
One of the many things no one tells
you about aging is that it is such a
nice change from being young. Ah,
being young is beautiful, but being
old is comfortable.

various changes to Medicare come 2014. Please sign the signup sheet that is in the Activity Center on the clip board for this
workshop.
Open season will be from October 15th thru December 7th,
2013. If you wish to make any changes on your health or prescription drug coverage, that will be the time to do it. Come to

REAL ESTATE
UPDATE
The 2013 real estate report for Pennbrooke
in the past seven months have been 43 closed
sales and nine pending sales. These totals do
not include “For Sale by Owners”. The last eight
weeks have been fairly quiet; but, that is pretty
normal for this time of year. However, from the
middle of July until now, we have been busy.
So it looks like things are picking up again now
that the 4th of July is behind us. The lull may be
over for the summer.
Please remember if you, your friends or
neighbors are looking to buy or sell or just need
advice, give me a call to schedule an appointment and I will be happy to assist you.
Have a happy and safe summer!!!

NEWS & VIEWS – AUGUST 2013
Wayne Stevenson is out of town
for two months and has asked me
to write these Garden Club articles.
I will deviate again this month for an
article on fruit trees for your yard…
Even if you have limited space, you can still enjoy
fresh fruit. Although not all fruit trees thrive in containers for long periods, you can grow any fruit tree in a
container for a few years and then transplant it. You can
also choose a dwarf variety, which is well suited to living
in a container.
POPULAR TREES — Some of the most popular dwarf
citrus trees to grow in containers are:
Meyer Lemon: First imported from China in 1908, it is
believed to be a lemon and a mandarin. The fruit has a
very sweet flavor and is less acidic than a true lemon.
Calamondin: Prized for its attractive shape and foliage, it produces fragrant flowers nearly year-round. It is
grown primarily for aesthetics and less for actual, edible
fruit.
Dwarf Kaffa Lime Tree: The rind of the fruit and doublelobed, aromatic leaves are often used in cooking.
Master gardeners prefer mail-order bare-root trees.
Inspect the tree when it arrives to be sure the packing
material is still moist and the roots are in good shape. As
with any bare-root tree, make sure the roots never dry
out before planting,
To Plant
• Use any kind of container as long as it has drainage
holes and is an adequate size for the tree—10–16
inches in diameter.
• Fill the container with a light, well-grained potting mixture. Make a small mound in the center of the pot and
arrange the roots over the mound. Cover the roots
with soil and tamp in lightly.
• Leave the stake in place to help the tree remain sturdy
while the roots become established.
• Place in full sun, southern exposure.
• Water to keep the soil moist, but not soggy.
• Fertilize with a formula high in nitrogen with trace materials.

SUPPORT POETRY
IN OUR LOCAL SCHOOLS
The Pennbrooke Fairways Book Club will purchase
books again this year for Oak Park Middle School’s
Language Arts classes. This year the book we’ve
chosen in collaboration with the Language Arts Department Chair is Poetry for Young People: Robert
Frost, edited by Gary Schmidt, illustrated by Henri
Sorensen, and published by Sterling Press.
Each of our Book Club members has pledged to buy
two books for donation and we also look to friends of
the Book Club and the Pennbrooke Fairways community-at-large to help us in this very worthwhile project.
Each book costs $6.95 (before tax) and is available
at most book stores.
If you’d like to participate in this effort, you may
purchase books at your local bookstore and donate
them to me or simply make a monetary donation to
me toward this cause. I will be purchasing books from
Barnes & Noble with my discount card throughout the
summer and fall through November. Then, we’ll make
our presentation to Oak Park Middle School’s representative at our December Book Club meeting.
We hope you will want to be a part of this very
worthwhile project in conjunction with one of our local
middle schools. Many thanks to those of you who participated last year. Help us promote a love of poetry!

Uncovering Causes for
Skin Irritation
The Central Florida summer heat means
people try to keep cool by showing more
skin. People who experience irritating and
unsightly skin conditions may opt to cover
up instead.
Some skin conditions are caused by
reactions to sun exposure while taking
medications. Certain antibiotics, diabetes
medications and diuretics are the culprits
and the best cure is to stay indoors while
taking the drug, or to use a complete sun
block such as zinc oxide.
Other skin outbreaks may be caused by
bacteria or fungal infections or from allergic
reactions due to exposure to chemicals,
deter-gents, plants, pets or certain drugs.
Sometimes a medical practitioner will prescribe an over-the-counter medication but
they may not always provide relief. That is
A LOOK INTO A
DAY OF FISHING WITH
CAPTAIN JACKIE
6:00am...Four club members depart
Pennbrooke for the Twin Rivers Marina
at Crystal River.
7:05am...They stop at Grannies
restaurant at Fort Road and Highway
US 19 South for breakfast.
7:35am...Breakfast finished, they depart
for the Marina just about five miles
down Fort road.
8:00am...They join up with Captain
Jackie and load their coolers and bags
into the 20-foot Carolina Skiff. Get in
the boat, get seated and they leave the
dock. Going slow out the Salt River to
avoid hitting the Manatees, we arrive
at our first fishing spot at about 8:20am
and lines go in the water. Bang!
8:22am...Fish on! Landing a nice size
Mangrove Snapper (a Keeper), and
into the fish cooler it goes.
PENNBROOKE FAIRWAYS
where a compounding pharmacist may help.
“When a patient is reacting
to an ingredient in a drug,
such as propylene glycol, the
compounding pharmacist can
formulate a similar compound
without that triggering ingredient,” says Bill Gray, RPh and
STARx Pharmacy Director.
“Additionally, the pharmacist
can put several different drugs
into one formula to cover
many types of skin reactions
when the practitioner is not
sure what may be triggering
the reaction.”
Gray suggests speaking
with your pharmacist if you are
experiencing skin discomfort
due to a medication to discuss
potential alternatives.
8:25am...Bang! Another Fish On!...looks like a good one! In about three
minutes, the fish is landed. One more Keeper—an 18 and one half
inch Red Fish. They must be at least 18 inches and not more than 27
inches. They call that a slot fish. Only several minutes go by and Fish
On! One more over 18 inch Red fish! Just after that, another (Fish On!)
and it really is fighting! After a few minutes of back and forth, in and out,
the catch gets close enough to net and it is a several foot-long Shark.
We get its picture and back into the water it goes. Another angler gets
a good fighting fish and this one is a Keeper...a Spotted Sea Trout.
Into the cooler it goes. Fishing doesn’t get much better than this!
9:30am...Bang! Fish On! This one is a real fighter and it takes several
minutes before it’s close enough for Captain Jackie to net. Wow! Is
it too big? No! Just about a quarter of an inch short of 27 inches. A
real beauty! Then another over 18-inch Red fish is caught, netted
and measured, and placed in the cooler with the other fish. As it is
in fishing, the fish sometimes just move on and there’s a lull in fish
biting. We move on to another spot and set our lines for drift fishing.
Boy, this works real great and several more Trout are caught, as is a
Black Sea Bass, two more Sharks, and several Pin Fish for cut bait.
And who knows how many too small Trout and other fish. Time has
flown by and we need to head back to the Marina.
4:00pm...We get back to the Marina and Captain Jackie fillets the fish
for us (and we have a good mess of fish to take home for our wives
to cook).
5:35pm...We arrive back at Pennbrooke and the fish get put in the frig
to cook another day. It’s Miller time! What a great way to spend the
day! But know this, these kind of fishing days are not always the way
it goes! That’s why it’s called fishing not catching!

PENNBROOKE FAIRWAYS
ABOUT THE
CASUAL DINNER CLUB
For a number of years, Pennbrooke Fairways has had
a Dinner Club which is now called The Casual Dinner
Club. Residents wishing to participate should sign up
by August 26th to participate in the new season that
runs September, 2013 through April, 2014. If you wish
to become involved but miss the August 26th deadline,
I will do everything that I can to add you to the program.
Four dinners will be scheduled, one each for the following time periods: Sept/Oct, Nov/Dec, Jan/Feb and
Mar/April. An individual or couple only “hosts” once
a year. The rest of the time, they participate as guests
at another home. The club coordinator will prepare
a schedule of hosts and their guests so that all club
members can participate in all four dinners.
Each host coordinates a mutually acceptable date for
their dinner for the two-month dinner period assigned
to them. The host provides the entrée and arranges the
menu, assigning the guests appropriate food items to
round out the meal. Dinners are NOT expected to be
Gourmet or overly formal but more on the casual side.
Some hosts also include games and/or other entertainment, but most hosts do not. Just the opportunity to
enjoy a conversation with other neighbors is usually
sufficient. The dinners are a WONDERFUL opportunity
to meet people you may not know and to have some
fun in the process.
NOTE: We want to encourage individuals, as well
as married couples, to participate. (Participation is not
limited to couples only.) I will also be assigning spots
in various groupings called “Mystery Guests.” That will
allow the host to invite people who might be interested
in participating in the group but who are not currently
signed up. It is my hope that we can add new members
to the group next year through this process.
We are also including a Registration Form for your
convenience in signing up.
Coordinator for the 2013-2014 Season: Pat Moore;
365-4333. Please return your registration
form to Box
th

Message from Robbie...
Greetings to AllI hope you are all enjoying your summer! We are finally
getting some rain here in Pennbrooke and our ponds are
filling up nicely.
I would like to start off my column thanking all of you for
your patience and understanding while the Activity Center
and pool were closed for semi-annual maintenance. The
maintenance staff did a great job—especially with the tile
replacements in the main hall area. We’ve gotten some
wonderful comments and I’ve passed them along to the
staff. It’s always nice to hear that hard work is appreciated!
Over the past 6-7 years, we have had a “critter trap” program. Residents that had critters digging or destroying their
property (such as armadillos, raccoons, etc.) could borrow
a trap instead of calling a nuisance pest company. One
of our maintenance staff would drop the trap off and then
pick it up when you were done. This certainly wasn’t part
of their job description, but we did it to assist our residents.
We started out with 13 traps and now have only 2. Even
though residents had to sign out the traps, when we would
follow up to see where the traps were they had passed the
trap along to someone else, who passed it along, etc. We
have only been able to track down 2 as mentioned before,
and they are broken.
We are not going to replace the missing traps and unfortunately are not going to continue our “critter trap” program. I apologize to those of you who are on the waiting list
for a trap. We do have the name of some trappers that the
PHOA uses and would be happy to provide you with their
name and number.
PROJECT UPDATES
• Storm Drain Repair Project: The storm drain repairs
are completed. I thank all of your for your patience and
understanding. It was completed just before the rains
started coming...perfect timing!!!
• SR 44 Paving Project (this isn’t a PHOA project but it
affects our residents): The project is moving right along.
It appears that the majority of the work being done by our
front entrance is done. It is never pleasant to live in an
area where road work is being done and have to navigate it on a daily basis…but you’ve all been real troopers!
During the entire time this project has been going on, I’ve
only received ONE complaint from a resident!!! Thank
you all for your cooperation!
I know it’s only July and we are all in laid-back summer mode….but autumn will be here before you know it.
Besides being the time that our residents return and the
whirlwind of activities start, it’s also time to start planning
for the 2014 Annual Membership meeting. Please consider
helping your community by donating your talent and time
to serve on the Board of Directors. I know it’s a little early…
but I am just trying to “plant a seed.”
With baseball season in full swing (Go Rays!!) my quote
of the month comes from Hank Aaron…
“It took me seventeen years to get three thousand hits in
baseball. I did it in one afternoon on the golf course.”
Until next month…keep smiling.
—Robbie (Roberta Dill, Community Manager)

AUGUST 2013 – NEWS & VIEWS
Hi Y’all!
July 4th has come and gone
and we had a great turnout for our Cookout. The
menu consisted of grilled hamburgers; grilled kielbasa with sour kraut; potato salad; baked beans; potato chips; cookies; and drinks. It was a very hot and
steamy day outside and we even got a rain shower.
Thank goodness my Grillers were done cooking by
the time it started to rain and we enjoyed lunch inside.
We also had a wonderful program by Terry the
Trixter doing his magic acts. I got a little nervous when the
residents’ jewelry and money were disappearing. But all
was well as they re-appeared.
Let me take a moment to thank my awesome Volunteers
throughout the festivities. Grilling were Dick Ritter, Jim Papson and Ray Mater (aka the Weiner Man). Be sure to check
their pictures out on page 14 of this newsletter. In the kitchen
serving the food, and keeping the residents happy were Marion Papson; Jen Rice; Dee and Ray Kracht; Rick Fetty,
and Bob Durst. Linda Durst was out in the Grand Hall making sure the condiments and drinks were replenished and
cleaning up as needed. Thank you ALL for your help !!!!
Switching gears, I finally updated the Pennbrooke.org
website for Activities Director News. Be sure to go into
the documents and as you click on each month – August
thru December, 2013 – you will be able to pull up all the
PHOA events that will take place over the remainder of the

GREAT TIPS...JUST FOR YOU!
— Put a sheet of Bounce in your pocket to keep yellow
jacketsaway.Usethemallthetimewhenplaying
outoor sports, and when working outside.
— Bounce will chase ants away when you lay a sheet
near them. It also repels mice.
— Repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a
belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season.
— It takes the odor out of books and photo albums that
don’t get opened too often.
— Eliminates static electricity from your television (or
computer) screen. Since Bounce is designed to help
eliminate static cling, wipe your television screen with
a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from resettling.
— Dissolve soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a
sheet of Bounce.
— Freshen the air in your home. Place an individual
sheet of Bounce in a drawer or hang in the closet.
