President’s Message by Sandy Holubar
Wow, this year is really picking up speed, we’re into March already – a snowy,
I wish I were in the Caribbean, March…..
If you missed the February chapter meeting, you missed a good one. Miss
Iowa Mariah Carey was delightful, not at all the personality many of us were
anticipating. Her comments about backstage politics and joking about misspeaking on legalizing pot were hilarious. Before presenting she told me she
was really nervous because most of the time she speaks to Kindergarteners or 1st graders, so
talking to a bunch of adults, especially a leadership organization, was a little scary. She spoke
the entire hour without notes and did a fabulous job of entertaining us. Her story of overcoming
Turrets Syndrome, setting goals and working to achieve them was in my mind, one of leadership.
Too often we look at leadership as being an inspiration to large groups; she helped me to realize
at times, we must be leaders unto ourselves. In desiring to become better leaders to those
around us, we must first learn to lead ourselves, to establish those habits and traits that enable
us to reach goals, become better individuals, and leave a positive footprint. Leaving any type of
footprint creates history. If you step into one of the many large snow banks around us today,
you’ll leave a footprint – granted it may melt away, and not be particularly award winning or noteworthy, but you’ve still left an imprint, in that place and time, as part of history.
Life's not about all the steps you've taken, or all the places you have been, it's about the footprints you leave
behind. (Unknown Author)
We should always be mindful of what type of footprints we leave in our wake. In the sand, in
paint, on someone’s rear end, or better yet in someone’s mind or heart. We should strive to
make the imprint a positive, memorable, inspiring one. Well, the one in the rear end might not
be positive, but it might be memorable and inspiring….
If you walk in the footprints of others, you won’t make any of your own. (Unknown Author)
Keep in mind; we’re all leaders in some way, people around you are always watching, sometimes for us to make a mistake, but also as an opportunity to be inspired. Let’s do all we can to
insure the inspiration (footprint), is a good one.
Be the kind of person you would like to be with. Some
people come into our lives, make footprints on our hearts
and we are never the same. People are lonely because
they build walls instead of bridges. (Joseph Newton).
Have a great March!

In Case You Missed It by April Blais
The February LLDO meeting was on Wednesday, February 27
and even though we experienced quite a bit of snow the day
before, the show did go on.
The meeting began with the Aire Flow Café providing a delicious Italian lunch. After lunch Sandy Holubar opened the meeting and welcomed two new members, Mike Fitzgerald and
Justin Huntington. Vicki Miller announced that so far, Doug
McDaniel is in the lead for our competition to recruit the most
new members. Next, Dave Heddens gave us an update on the
community service fundraisers: the Pajama Drive, the Can-Do
Project, and the Bowling Teams. Please donate new pajamas
within the next week in the collection boxes. If you want to donate money towards the Can-Do Project, please give Deb Kerr
your cash donation. And you can sign up for a bowling team now. Tom Taylor and Leah Cox announced that the Fire Department and
Police Department will be coming to speak at LLDO. There will also be a Chili and Salsa Cook-Off with desserts, preferably cookies
and bars.
Then Tyler Gerdes introduced our guest speaker Mariah Cary, Miss Iowa 2012. Mariah shared her
journey of growing up with Tourette’s syndrome and eventually becoming Miss Iowa and going on to
be one of the top five finalists for the Miss America pageant.
As a child, Mariah felt excluded from her peers because of the way people treated her because of
her Tourette’s. Her grandparents encouraged her to try pageants and sports both of which helped
her focus her energy towards positive things in life. In high school she played volleyball and won a
scholarship to attend a junior college. Then she won the title Miss Muscatine and won a scholarship.
She did not expect to win the title on her first try but she was grateful and it helped her to attend St.
Mercy College for Public Relations.
She then went on to run for the title Miss Iowa and again surprisingly won on her first try. For her
platform she chose Tourette’s syndrome to give a voice to children struggling to feel normal. It also
gave her a tremendous sense of freedom and accomplishment to admit to judges that she did have
Tourette’s syndrome. But she demonstrated how she would be a great Miss Iowa State title holder.
This past year she went to the Miss America Pageant and she finished as one of the top five finalists. She is the sixth Miss Iowa to do
so. Mariah Cary has overcome adversity, given children with Tourette’s a good role model and friend, and went on to represent Iowa
well in the Miss America pageant. It was a pleasure having her at Lennox.

Dust off those recipe boxes as it is nearing the time for the Annual
LLDO Cook-off Event. The Cook-Off will take place at the LLDO
Chapter meeting to be held at the Knights of Columbus hall on April
18, 2013. There will be 3 categories of competition this year: Chili,
Salsa, as well as a bake-off of your favorite cookie or bar. Tons of
food and fun for all as well as prizes will highlight your evening. Come hungry as you can also be a judge in crowning the People’s Choice in each competition category.
Sit at the Head Table
Each month the person designated to take notes at the monthly program meeting will be asked
to sit at the head table with the speaker and the LLDO President so he/she has an opportunity
to talk to the speaker and ask additional questions. Members, if you are interested in sitting
with an upcoming speaker, respond to the monthly invite to sit at the head table, stating that
you are interested in sitting with the speaker. If there are more requests than there are seats
names will be drawn.
Also remember that photo ops with the speakers are always available!

Professional Development Event
Maximum Impact Club
by Kim Barnes
Several LLDO members took advantage of a teaching from speaker John Maxwell on January 31. Teachings
from John Maxwell’s Maximum Impact Club are offered monthly and January’s topic was “The 15 Invaluable
Laws of Growth.”
In January’s lesson John gave a sneak peek at his new book coming out on October 2, The 15 Invaluable Laws
of Growth. John’s trajectory in life took a dramatic shift when he decided he needed a plan for personal
growth. His leadership and legacy were forever changed because of his investment in himself, and with the
“Laws of Growth,” John hopes to help you grow yourself and those around you.
Look for an e-mail from the Professional Development Committee inviting you to March’s Maximum Impact Club.
If you have missed any past MIC Lunch and Learn meetings, recordings are still available; contact Paul VanderKley for more information.

Did You Know? By Kumar Ayushman
Easter:
Easter is a Christian festival and holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after
his crucifixion at Calvary as described in the New Testament. Easter is a moveable feast, meaning it is not
fixed in relation to the civil calendar. Many Americans follow the tradition of coloring hard-boiled eggs
and giving baskets of candy. The Easter Bunny is a popular legendary anthropomorphic Easter gift-giving
character analogous to Santa Claus in American culture. On Easter Monday, the President of the United States
holds an annual Easter egg roll on the White House lawn for young children. New York City holds an annual
Easter parade on Easter Sunday. This year Easter Sunday is on March 31 st.
St. Patrick’s Day:
The official apostle of Ireland is Saint Patrick. It is believed that he was the one who spread Christianity throughout
that county. He was credited with driving the snakes out of Ireland. It is not clear whether actual snakes were driven
out or if it is symbolic of abolishing pagan practices. One of the things that happened in March was designating
March 17 as St. Patrick's Day to honor the saint. It is now a day for celebrating all things Irish.

A note regarding Lennox non LLDO members as guests - past practice has been eligible employees are allowed to
attend a single meeting as the guest of a member, at no charge.
We’ve decided to open most chapter meetings for eligible non-members to attend, after their initial freebie, if they
preregister and pay the appropriate cost of the lunch.
Presently that cost is $15 per meal, more than double what members pay. Certain special chapter meetings may be
closed to these individuals, at the discretion of the board. - Sandy
