Nonprofit Organization U.S. POSTAGE PAID Tallahassee Florida PERMIT NO. 17 Holy Comforter Episcopal Church 2015 Fleischmann Road, Tallahassee, FL 32308-4593 RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED Spring 2015 TIME CHANGE provide receptions following funerals. It has become evident that our parish hall is not large enough to accommodate all of our parish gatherings. When the Church was built, the intention was that the parish hall should extend to the end of what we not refer to as the back patio. The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace. Psalm 29:11 Ministry Rich, Space Poor Be sure to “spring forward” 1 hour before you go to bed Holy Comforter is a parish blessed with rich and varied ministries for all ages. We offer ministry opportunities for those interested in outreach, liturgy, pastoral care, music youth fellowship and education. We are also blessed with a beautiful Church building which is only 10 years old. While we are “rich” in ministry, finding space for all of those ministries has been a challenge. Three ministries that have been most affected by our limited space have been our Food Pantry, Youth Ministry and our Hospitality Ministry. Saturday, March 7th! WELCOME TO HOLY COMFORTER! We are proposing the building of a combined Youth Building and Food Pantry which would be located next to the Church and in front of our campfire area. We are also proposing extending our parish hall out to the end of the patio. While we have not received bids, we project that the total project would cost us about $350,000. This is a rough estimate, the actual bids could be higher or lower. What we do know is that this project will only be possible with your support. We are proposing a Capitol Campaign to raise these funds over the next three years. Hollie Maddox has agreed to serve as the chair of our capitol campaign. You will be receiving more information about the project and you will be invited to be a part of making this project a reality. Our hope is to procure a loan Our Food Pantry feeds hundreds of people each week. The against the campaign pledges. The This past year we paid off two outstanding debts that were challenge comes from the fact that we do this out of what is incurred when we had the courage to move from our essentially a closet. The small space does not provide sufficient Miccosukee location to our present campus. We dreamed of space for the food we distribute. We are forced to store food building this Church and we made that dream a reality. Now it is throughout the Church basement. Because the pantry is so small time for the next stage of our dream. Imagine a Food Pantry our volunteers and our clients meet on the back patio, in intense space large enough to house all of the donated food and our heat and cold, to distribute the food. It is important to note that clients and volunteers as well. Imagine our youth having a space our volunteers do not complain at all. They are faithful minis- where they could grow their ministry. Imagine a parish hall large ters. However, wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a food pantry enough for our entire parish to gather. Now we can take that that was actually large enough to store the food we distribute and which we imagine and make it a reality. also accommodate our volunteers and clients. ~ Fr. Ted Under the leadership of Mtr. Teri, our Youth Ministry has grown significantly. Over 20 teens meet each week to pray, grow in their understanding of God and to enjoy Christian fellowship. However, they have no space that belongs to them. I have often referred to them in terms of the Old Testament Children of Abraham “wandering without a homeland.” It is incredible to Sunday, Feb. 1, 9:00 a.m. walk into the Mercy Lounge on a Wednesday evening and see During Breakfast, Parish Hall our youth cramped together. They have long dreamed of having a dedicated youth space where this ministry could grow and Everyone is encouraged to attend! thrive. Annual Parish Meeting Hospitality is a cornerstone of Holy Comforter’s ethos (spirit). In the Life of Our Church Holy Comforter Healing Service The Vicar’s Corner Mtr. Teri Jesus modeled healing… There are dozens of instances in the Bible and we know from the scholars that there were many more. He had one motive for healing so many and that was His compassion for those whom He loved. And His love didn’t stop there. After Jesus’ resurrection, we find many instances of healing in the Book of Acts as well as throughout history unto the present time. Jesus loves each and every one of us so much that He gives us various gifts to be used to assist others. Faith, knowledge, wisdom, prophecy, healing, and discernment are but a few of these gifts and they are given to all who know Him. We are living in what theologians are calling an “Age of Anger”. Many of us are in a continual state of fear and anxiety that is fed by the media and the political systems. Anger, anxiety, and fear can be fed from our society or can stem back from our family of origin. Either way, if we do not take control of these emotions, they can ultimately damage our health. Prayer ministers lovingly usher people that we are praying for into God’s light and life. That is the key element of healing prayer here at Holy Comforter. We are all searching for happiness and a sense of belonging. Getting to the root of trauma and pain can unfold new chapters of health and happiness into our lives. Join us for a dinner each week, Wednesday nights, 6:00 p.m. with our amazing cook, Ernie Roaza! Cost is only $5/person, maximum $15/ family. Bible Studies Bible Studies are on Wednesdays, and we are currently studying the Gospel of Luke. Mtr. Teri’s class is at 10:00 a.m. and Fr. Ted’s class is at 6:45 p.m. ~ Mtr. Betsy Lynn Goehrig, Editor Betsy Gray, Director of Church Music In this issue of the DOVE, we get to read about Betsy Gray, long time member of Holy Comforter who has recently become our Director of Church Music. In her words below you will read how the Lord has directed her along a musician’s path. Here is what she shared: When I was asked if the DOVE could include my bio in this quarter’s publication, I decided to write my musical story. Of course, I had to consult with my musical parents about my earliest years. They said I was practically born singing, and I sang because I was happy. When my brother was born, I was three. We would rock baby John and sing him to sleep. Mom said that was when I learned to sing for a reason, a purpose. My first solo was in church when I was four years old. I joined the Cherub Choir at five. So, in the beginning, I am convinced I was created by God to sing. I continued to sing solos, in church choirs and school choruses. I was a skinny, scrawny little girl with a big voice. I guess I was pretty bold. I loved to sing and sang all of the time. I made my stage debut when I was in 6th grade, singing the role of Carmen! Yes, Bizet’s Carmen….”30 minutes with Carmen” that is. Music was my life; it was my prayer. I learned scripture through songs and hymns. All of this helped me in later years whenever challenges happened in my life. College bound, I found I had no choice. FSU was where my parents agreed to send me. I could choose; however, what I wanted to major in, which changed a few times. Ultimately, I chose music and earned my BA from the FSU School of Music. My principle instrument was voice, and my passion was choral conducting. I studied with the best of the best. While in the school of music, I met some amazing women of faith and began a deeper journey with God. During that time a close friend was injured in a car accident, and was in a coma in Tampa. I drove down to be by her side and to sing to her. I saw God’s healing at work, and that began another part of God’s plan for me in ministry. In 2001 I formed Grace and Glory Ministries. My children, Kathleen and Chandler joined me in recording a CD, Small Steps to Jesus. The songs are peaceful and they focus on Jesus. It was a way to bring music to those in need or to small children just learning about God. For nearly twenty years, in addition to having a career, I was the choir director at Christ Episcopal Church, and for three years I directed the Jefferson County Choral Society at the Monticello Opera House. I also enjoyed many aspects of performing throughout the years from musical theatre, to women’s barbershop, to singing with a band! That last one was definitely a bucket list item! In 2013, I made the pilgrimage to the Holy Land with friends and members of Holy Comforter. Father Ted encouraged me to sing whatever, whenever. Places, stories, and people triggered songs in my head and they fell out of my mouth! I discovered, once again, that my heart and my head are filled with song. I have always believed that humming and whistling is the sign of a happy person. So I decided it was time to sing and hum and whistle out loud. Not just for myself because I am happy, but because perhaps that happiness should be shared! My coworkers at the Chamber of Commerce often hear me singing in my office or in the hallway. “I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free. For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.” God has surrounded me with family at Holy Comforter. It is a place of welcome, acceptance, and love. Here, my faith has blossomed and strengthened. Father Tom, Father Reed, Father Ted and Mother Teri….and many of you have helped open my eyes and heart to God’s call for my life, for ministry. I cannot forget to mention Deacon Lucene Birch, who is so filled with Christ’s light. She took my hand on my first Sunday, Epiphany 2005, looked me in the eyes and said, “Welcome home, please come back.” So I’ve come full circle. In writing this bio, I have discovered that God’s call for my life has been ordained from birth. He has been calling me to a ministry of music, and directing the music at Holy Comforter is part of that call. I’m excited to be a part of God’s plan for evangelism and ministry at Holy Comforter. I will continue to lean on Him for guidance, and with joy I will share the gifts and talents He has given me. As I mentioned earlier, songs just pop into my head and I want to share this one with you… ”In your time, in Your Time, You make all things beautiful in Your Time. Lord, my life to you I bring, may each song I have to sing, be to you a lovely thing, in Your time.” By His grace and for His glory, Betsy American Flags Presented to HCES On January 12th, Gene Sherron, former Rotary District Governor, and Michael Stiles, the current Rotary President, presented our students with 3 flags that were displayed in Afghanistan by our troops. The flags were sent with care packages, assembled by our Mission Possible student group, in the Spring as one of the outreach projects during Middle School ACE Week. The flags have been signed with the troop number and location and will be placed in various locations on our campus. Why do you come to church? Everyone is busy and people say that the weekend is the only time they have to “catch up.” Yet some people are at Church almost every Sunday, so we asked “what are the reasons why you DO come to Church?” Here are more uplifting and inspiring responses! ♦ I come to church each week because I have found it to be true that on those Sundays that I really want to sleep in, but I force myself to "get up and go", well, those are usually the Sundays that I come away from church with some amazing insight or experience. In other words, the less I feel like going, the more I need to be there! ♦ When I first get to Church and walk down the aisle, I have a wonderful feeling of being accepted and loved. ♦ Sometimes, during the middle of the Communion Service, a feeling of the presence of the Holy Spirit is so powerful that I get goose-bumps; I feel a tear running down my cheeks, it is so overwhelming. ♦ I go to church to recommit my life to God, in His church and among His people to find the blessings of comfort and peace that are found so abundantly there. ♦ I go to church to be encouraged, inspired, and lifted up by my church family, who show their love as no other family, and then try to do the same for them in their life journey. ♦ I go to church to find ways I can help to reach out to those who do not know our Lord--or who have just forgotten about it for whatever reason. ♦ I come to church each week because I believe that God has a message for me there. Sometimes the message is in one of Ted or Teri's sermons, but many times it comes from our centering prayer group or from a discussion in the Spiritual Journeys group. Often it comes from a conversation with another parishioner! ♦ I come to church each week to realign my walk. Usually after a week, I'm veering off in my thinking or feeling unsettled. The ritual of asking for and receiving forgiveness, and then receiving communion to give me strength and inspiration is an integral part of my personal spiritual walk. ♦ To see my friends!! ♦ I love the Prayer Book. Is there anything more beautiful than the prayers therein? All the Psalms and the Songs of Isaiah, beautiful prayers for every need and situation. ♦ I go to church to worship my God with like-minded people who believe in baptism and the Eucharist. I offer thanks to my God for all that He has given and done for me and offer prayers to those in need and for the world. ♦ My church, Holy Comforter, is my family. They nurture, help, study and celebrate with one another, along with reaching out to others in need. Then, as Jesus instructed, we need to go forth to spread God's word to others and hopefully, I set an example to others by the actions in my life, not merely my words. ♦ My life has a void if I don’t attend church on Sunday, and mid-week worship refuels me. ♦ Liturgy, prayer, and instruction are important to me. ♦ I hear readings from the Bible and am told how I can incorporate these teachings in my daily life. ♦ Holy Communion, with thanksgiving, offers remembrance of the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ and the promise of eternal life. ♦ I cling to the forgiveness offered, knowing that nothing can separate me from the love of God and the presence of the Holy Spirit in my life. From the Evangelism Commission Happy CHURCH New Year ~ From a Member of the Evangelism Commission Tour of the British Isles Fr. Ted and Mtr. Teri will be leading a 9-day tour of the British Isles beginning June 15, 2015. The tour begins in London, England and ends in Edinburgh, Scotland. We will visit such sights as Buckingham Palace, Stonehenge, Canterbury, Norwich, York, Hadrian's Wall, and many other sites. The cost for the tour is determined by the number of pilgrims. $4,548 for 15+ passengers, $4,198 for 20+ passengers or $3,998 for 30+. The journey features: round-trip air from Tallahassee; hotels, land transportation; professional guides; breakfast and dinner daily; entrance fees to all sites. Brochures are available in the narthex. I was thinking about the secular new year and the resolutions we make each year. It occurs to me that this is a new church year so why not make resolutions about our Christian lives? You might want to find a way to organize reading the Bible. Our prayer book has the answer. The Eucharistic Lectionary (p. 900, BCP) 2015 is year B. The Daily Office is found on p. 936 BCP. Watch the Dove and EDove for Bible Study Classes. These classes offer a way to learn, meet, and/or get to know better your church family members. (There’s great food, too!) Want to be more active but don’t know what to choose? Ask a Sunday greeter for a Ministry Booklet. Pick some opportunities to serve that sound right for you. Call the chairperson of the ministry for the date and time of meetings. You might also think about picking one that you would never want to do. I took the Gifts Class last year and scored highest in Evangelism. No one was more shocked than I was! I have since joined the Evangelism Commission and found it to be a good fit. There are groups to serve your prayer life, serve our church members, serve the church, and serve the community, such as the Food Pantry and Grace Mission. Also, please remember to bring friends to church with you. May you and your loved ones have a happy and successful new church year in your search for a deeper and more spiritual life in Christ.
