Their names and ages were Cody 13, Goldy 14, Maddie 12, Roy 12, Scottie 16, Wilson 12, and Sweetie Pie age 14. Thanks to Golden Age Cocker Retirement they lived an extra-long life due to extended veterinary care and love from their retirement families. Thanks to our retirement families for taking a “chance” on senior dogs. One of the retirement dogs was adopted by her retirement family, so she no longer receives veterinary help. In late 2013 and the first quarter in 2014, CSR took in 47 cockers from one address in Wisconsin. These dogs needed so much Topper is an 8 Year-old tri-colored neutered male. Topper has an average amount of energy. He gets along with people, other dogs and also cats. He needs to have eye meds for dry eye. He is eligible for partial retirement in which CSR pays for 1/2 of the cost of eye meds for the remainder of his life. Flower Power! Thanks to everyone who purchased bulbs and flowers from Flower Power. One half of the purchase price goes to the Golden Age Cocker Retirement. The goal each year has been $500.00, we fell a tad short this year at $425.00. The money went to pay for the Heartgard for all of our Golden Age Cockers. 2014—Issue 1 veterinary care that many of them are on total retirement or partial retirement. Total retirement CSR pays all the veterinary bills for the rest of the dog’s natural life plus 4 grooms per year. Partial retirement means we pay a partial bill for a specific medical issue. An example would be dry eye, CSR pays for ½ of the eye medicine and the adopter pays the other ½ of the medicine. As a rule the cost is $40.00 each tube, which becomes very expensive for an adopter, so CSR picks up ½ of the cost. This ensures the dog will continue to receive the proper medications for the rest of its life. Facebook.com/Goldenagecockerretirement CSR supporters can now purchase items from CSR. Or sell items on e-Bay and donate a portion of the proceeds to CSR by using: PayPalGivingFund.org / Cocker Spaniel Resources Round Car Magnets 5 1/2”- 6” $7.50 each includes tax and shipping. Saturday, May 3, 2014 was the 4th Annual No Kill Walk for the Animals. CSR had a beautiful day for a Walk. We made our goal of $3000.00 The donations will be used to pay medical expenses. Thanks to all the friends who stopped by and chatted. Yes, we have cats! We only take in enough cats when we have room in the 4 available foster homes and the number of cages we have available at PETCO in Stillwater. CSR is a recognized public charity by the IRS, thus as long as CSR maintains compliance with Code 501 (c)(3), we can add programs of our choice within the scope of helping animals as defined in CSR bylaws and Articles of Incorporation. CSR has cared for and placed cats on Petfinder ever since the organization was founded in 2006. CSR has been a partner with PETCO foundation since August 2007. During 2012 PETCO in Stillwater placed cat adoption cages in their Stillwater store for the first time. Since CSR had a supply of cats which needed homes this was a natural progression for this organization. In 2013 CSR placed 50 cats in fur-ever homes. The cat adoption follow the same procedures and policies as our cocker spaniel adoptions. CSR is very selective of the cats it takes. Do to limited foster families and resources, we only take young adoptable cats and kittens. Bahama Mama came to us as a skinny worm-ridden cat and left as a beautiful loving healthy cat. It is so cold and dark in here. I think it is almost morning - a sliver of light is faintly streaming through a crack in the wall of the barn. I heard the people say minus nine; it's too cold out here for man or beast, yet here we are day and night huddling together in our crates to keep warm. My kennel mates wet themselves and me to keep us warm. Every time this happens I feel the burning on my skin as I sit and wait for the next event of the day. Maybe I will get someone to notice me today, give me a pat on the head, or a little attention. THE WAG MAG The three of us wait shaking, wondering what is happening. We wait, eyes focused intently on the opening in back of a pickup topper. More crates and more of my kennel mates join us inside the topper truck. The tailgate slams shut. The top flap slams, all is quiet. We bounce from side to side and fall upon each other. The truck stops; topper opens; faces wrapped in scarves; eyes staring make us shiver even more. One by one we are gently removed from ice cold crates to a warmer crate with soft blankets to lie on. Still scared. I am dry, warm, and alone in my very own crate with my kennel mates in their own clean crates. The cargo van side door slowly slides closed, movement begins again. Hours pass and the van halts, the door slides open and more bundled faces and hands start taking us one by one into a very bright warm place. Today is different; there is more rustling We arrived at our new temporary home— and movement. “What's happening?” a boarding kennel with beds for us to sleep on off the floor, fresh clean water and a Crate doors are opening, rattling, and bowl of my very own food. I don't have to slamming closed. Excitement is every- share with anyone. Soft island music is where. Some of my kennel mates are mak- wafting through the kennel. I don't feel ing sounds, not exactly barking, but afraid any more. squeaking, squealing, and exciting noises. I am grabbed by a large gloved hand and Look at me now! stuffed into a crate with two other kennel mates of mine. Shivers start quaking THROUHOUT my entire body from fright and bitter cold. MINNESOTA DOG AND CAT BREEDER REGULATION BILL SIGNED INTO LAW!! Governor Dayton signed the Omnibus Supplemental Budget Bill (H.F. 3172) into law on May 20, 2014 which included the dog and cat breeder regulation bill! This means the Dog and Cat Breeder Regulation bill is now officially law in the State of Minnesota! The law becomes effective July 1, 2014, when the Board of Animal Health (BAH) will begin registering commercial dog and cat breeders who fall under the bill’s language. Within one year, the BAH will be required to annually inspect those breeders and any new breeders that set up facilities covered under the law (they can also begin inspections starting July 1, 2014, if they choose). The BAH will then license those breeders who are in compliance with existing animal welfare laws and additional provisions just passed into law. What the New Law Does: Licensing – requires commercial dog and cat breeders in MN to be licensed in order to operate and sell dogs and cats in the State of Minnesota; Inspections and Enforcement – gives legal authority to the MN Board of Animal Health to inspect commercial dog and cat breeding facilities annually and enforce existing State laws and new laws to ensure animal care standards are met; and Penalties – imposes civil, administrative and criminal penalties for those who violate the law. Cockers, Crackers & Cheese! CSR Doggie Play Date THE WAG MAG 2014 - Issue 1 OUR FAMILY HISTORY WITH: MILLIE/MELBA/MIA Millie/Melba now known as Mia came to CSR as a terrified breeder cocker. She had to drag a leash when she was in the house or outdoors in a fenced yard to catch her. Last September at Yappy Hour Mia came as a changed dog after 3 months in a foster home with "real" companion dogs. The pictures tell the story. Mia was adopted by Mark and Deb Basset. Mark and Diane discovered Chippewa Falls has a dog park called "Happy Tails". It is about a one mile oval around a storm water collection area. “Diane and I took Mia there this afternoon for about an hour. We took off her leash outside for the very first time! She walked on Diane's left side pretty much around the entire oval!! She did run after a male cockapoo for little ways but she lost interest pretty quick, then she came back to Diane and continued to walk! Pretty amazing transition in about 7 months! She got to meet about 10 other dogs at the park! She is still the SWEETEST thing!” Mark Bassett Join us for monthly doggie play dates in Plymouth, MN.
