NLMS family, Happy Spring!
As we spring forward into the last leg of the race,
students need to be more focused than ever! The
last nine weeks of the school year are not just review
weeks, our teachers are still teaching new content. At
NLMS, we not only want our students to show they are

proficient in each subject area but we want them to show growth2 from
last year to this year.
It is also important for students not to just be
present and actively learning at school, but also
on time. 7:45am is when the tardy bell rings and
students are expected to be in their seats, ready
to learn.
I also want to remind students about their behavior and making good
choices. We have lots of activities that are planned through the end of the
year. We don’t want students to miss out on these fun activities due to
poor choices. Also, as the weather warms up, please review the Student
Dress Code Policy- BOE Policy 4316, found on page 23 of the 2015-2016
Parent & Student Handbook . Students will be asked to change if their
clothes do not meet these requirements.
Cell phones are to be turned off and put
away during the day unless teachers are
permitting their use for instruction only.
Many students are texting parents, classmates, and using social media
during the school day. This is a violation of our technology usage agreement. Parents, please review this agreement with your students. I truly
appreciate your support in helping students follow the school expectations.

News from the Jungle…6th Grade
The sixth-grade recently attended a production of “Isabella at the Circus” at The Green
Room Community Theater, starring one of our Zany Zebras, Lynnlee Little. We had a great
time on our spring field trip and got to experience a wonderful play. We hope everyone
enjoys their spring break and spending time with their family. When we return, we will be
gearing up for EOGs and would like to encourage students to be here as much as possible. Teachers will be finishing up curriculum standards and have planned many lessons to
get students prepared for the EOGs. It is essential that students be here in order to prepare and be successful. Also, with warm weather approaching, students will have many
things going on outside of school. Please take the time to review your child’s homework
each night, so they don’t get behind.
7th Grade News
Seventh-grade students and teachers are getting excited about our May Whitewater
Center trip. Be sure that all forms, including the waivers, are returned in a timely manner. Paper towels, anti-bacterial wipes, tissues, and school supplies (cap erasers, pencils, etc.) would be appreciated. At this time of year it is easy for students to become
lackadaisical about organization, homework, and studying notes each night. Push
them! As the saying goes, "It ain't over til it's over!"
News from 8th Grade
As we are now in our final nine weeks of
this school year, eighth-grade teachers
would like to ask parents to encourage
students to continue to work hard and
do their best in the classroom. High
school is just around the corner, and this
is the time for that final academic push
to ensure that students are ready for the
high school curriculum. Students are still
taking benchmarks in all subjects to assess their progress, and it is important
that they take them seriously and do
their best work. We would also like to
remind students to take stock of their
supplies and make sure they have the
necessary materials (pencils, paper, etc.)
to complete their assignments. Any tissue that could be donated would be
great!
Finally, high school guidance counselors
have met with students at the middle
school to look over their high school registrations; if they haven't done so already, parents should discuss high school
schedules with their children.

NLMS HAS A NEW
OUTDOOR CLASSROOM!
6th Grade-Computer
Skills & Applications:
Students have completed
their finger placement and
technique unit! We are going
to take the skills learned in
this unit and apply them as
students learn the basics in
word processing.
Please remember to come to
class with something to
write with and your notebook— this unit requires lots
of notes.
7th Grade-Marketing &
Entrepreneurship:
This month’s focus has shifted to learning how to market
one’s self or product/service.
Students have learned that
often how the item is
marketed has nothing to do
with the actual product, for
example Doritos Super Bowl
commercials.
8th Grade-Microsoft
PowerPoint Academy:
This month students have
really been challenged!
Learning how to combine
PowerPoint presentations
together is a great way to
combine slide shows or use
just one or two slides from
another presentation.
However, learning how to
convert other files, like a
word processing file, into a
PowerPoint presentation
without have to type any
information definitely tested
our understanding of PowerPoint. Once this skill was
mastered, students really
did like this feature—
definite time saver! We are
continuing to build upon
previously learned skills to
design and create a professional presentation.
6th Grade:
The 6th-grade students
will be inspired by
Grant Wood, an American Regionalist painter,
who used his rural surroundings to capture the
essence of his own community. Students will be
asked to identify a landscape scene of a favorite
place or vacation spot
that inspires them and
will sketch this scene
onto a clay tile. To incorporate texture in this
scene, students will
choose different types
of pasta to imprint
designs.
7th Grade:
The 7th-grade students
will be inspired by the
work of Kimmy Cantrell,
a ceramic sculptor, who
tells a story in his sculptures through the use of
shape, color, texture and
balance. Students will
design a narrative clay
mask in which they too
will tell a story through
the use of shape, color,
balance and texture.
8th Grade:
The 8th-grade students
will study the history of
the clay garden gnomes
that were created in
Germany by Philip
Griebel. Inspired by the
three different types of
gnomes created at his
factory, the worker
gnome, leisure gnome
and cultural gnome,
students will select and
create their own garden
gnome using the pinch
technique.
Meghan Buckman
Olivia Wagner and
Taylor Ward, both 8thgrade students, recently dedicated the new outdoor classroom with a ribbon cutting.
These young ladies presented Dr. Rogers with a proposal, secured the donation
of materials from Lowe's,
designed, and built this outdoor classroom for NLMS
teachers and students as
part of their Girl Scout
Silver Project.
The classroom is
located between
the 7th and 8thgrade hallways.
