DOVER-FOXCROFT – Marilyn Cameron thought she was
going to attend a welcome home
party Sunday afternoon for Lew
Dow, a close friend who had just
been discharged from the hospital.
But only after she entered the
Dover-Foxcroft United Methodist
Church hall to a chorus of “surprise!” did she realize that the
gathering was in her honor.
Mrs. Cameron, 81, had recently
announced her retirement after
71 years as church pianist. “I’m
really surprised and humbled,”
she said. “I remember the first
time I played as a youngster. But
I never thought I’d still be doing
it after 70 years.”
After some entertainment by
the church choir and the Yesteryear Music Makers, she was presented with a silver music box by
Pastor Mark Stevens. “This is in
honor of the many years you’ve
provided us with heavenly music,” Stevens said.
“Music has always been part of
our lives,” said Cameron’s daugh-
ter, Lynne. “Mom gave me and
my sister piano lessons starting
at age 10. But we’d listen to music on radio, television and at live
shows every chance we could.”
Susan Ramsey, the church’s
music director, recalled asking Mrs. Cameron to play at the
Greater Federation of Women’s
Club’s fall conference in Ells-

DOVER-FOXCROFT - Mayo Regional Hospital honored local and national veterans during a wreath
dedication ceremony, held at the hospital. The event was attended by community members, hospital staff,
and local veterans who came to show support and appreciation for the community’s veterans and their
families.
The ceremony opened with remarks from Brad Ellis, formerly of Mayo Regional Hospital’s Engineering
Department and Commander of the American Legion Post 165 in Sangerville. Dr. Dave McDermott, MD,
MPH, CPE, FACPE, Medical Director of Inpatient and Emergency Services at Mayo Regional Hospital,
read a dedication honoring the nation’s troops. “Mayo Regional Hospital values the service of our veterans.
Many of our staff members have served in uniform - many more have spouses, children, or parents who
have served or are serving in uniform now. We are proud to serve all veterans in the Maine Highlands
and their families not only on special days such as this but every day of the year,” said Dr. McDermott.
During the ceremony, several community members and employees of the hospital honored their relatives
who are currently serving or have served in the past.
This annual observance and tribute thanks each veteran in the communities served by Mayo Regional
Hospital and each veteran who has touched the lives of members of the Mayo Team. Mayo Regional
Hospital is a veteran-friendly employer, including policies that help to bridge the gap for employees in the
Guard or Reserve who are called to periods of extended active duty that help to ensure that they do not
suffer a loss of income in the event that the military pay is lower than their civilian earnings.
The wreath, donated by Brad Ellis, was dedicated at the hospital flag pole at the entrance to the
hospital, where it will remain as a visible reminder to honor the service men and women on Veterans Day
and every day.

GUILFORD – For those looking to get a head start on the Christmas shopping season, mark Saturday,
November 21 on your calendar.
The JD Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to suicide prevention through awareness and
education, will host an auction at the Mount Kineo Masonic Lodge in Guilford from 2 - 5 p.m.
State Sen. Paul Davis of Sangerville, who has served as auctioneer at many of the JD Foundation’s
previous auctions, will wield the gavel once again.
Local businesses have been very generous for this event, according to foundation director Cheryl Morin.
“We’ll have toys, antiques, tools, jewelry, baskets of Dunkin’ Donuts products, household items and many
gift certificates,” she said.
Some of the participating businesses include Rowell’s Garage in Dover-Foxcroft, Yankee Goldsmith in
Newport, Advance Auto Parts in Dexter, Auto Zone in Palmyra, Steeped Tea from Ellen McBride, Milo
Manor, the new Red Moose Restaurant in Brownville, Fox Brook Variety in Dover-Foxcroft, Noah’s Landing in Dexter and Harmony Home Décor in Corinna.
Morin and her husband, Victor, started the JD Foundation in 2007, two years after their son William
“Jody” Day took his life at age 19.
Some of the JD Foundation’s statewide programs include, but are not limited to suicide awareness and
prevention for adults, veterans and their families; Project Prevent for students, which deals with suicide
prevention and bullying; and Connecting with Nature, traumatic incident reduction sessions.
For more information about the foundation and the upcoming auction, call 876-2295, visit www.thejdfoundation.org or find them on Facebook.

The First Universalist
is reviving the food pantry
by Mike Lange
SANGERVILLE – With Thanksgiving arriving soon, the needs of elderly and low-income residents has
crossed the minds of many Piscataquis County residents.
That was the case at the First Universalist Church of Sangerville and Dover-Foxcroft where a food
cupboard that had been operating for several years has recently “just been limping along,” according to
volunteer manager Barbara Wilbur.
But things are changing.
Wilbur said that while there are food pantries operating in Guilford and Dover-Foxcroft, many Sangerville residents don’t have the opportunity or transportation to use them. “So we’ve revived our food cupboard and we’re getting the word out,” she said.
Will’s Shop ‘N Save in Dover-Foxcroft has either donated merchandise or sold it to the church at a
steep discount, Wilbur said, and Rusty Willette of Dover-Foxcroft has been instrumental in getting fresh
produce and meat for the cupboard clients. “Will Wedge (owner of Shop ‘N Save) has been very generous
to us,” Wilbur said.
The new days and hours of the food cupboard starting December 1 will be the first Wednesday and third
Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., although the church can also accommodate emergencies by
calling 876-4926.
Clients will be asked to provide their name, town of residents, phone number and the number of people
in their family. The service is not limited to Sangerville residents.
Wilbur said that the food cupboard is temporarily located in the kitchen area of the church, but she’s in
the process of moving to the basement where a refrigerator and freezer are located.
Another service being offered at the First Universalist Church this winter will be a free soup lunch during January, February and March “traditionally the coldest months of the year,” Wilbur said.
Those who would like to make food or monetary donations can drop them off at the church during Sunday services or contact the office at 876-4926.
We hope everyone enjoys some
time with those they love.

worth a few years ago. “At first, she didn’t want to go because she was nervous about playing in front of
so many people,” Ramsey said. “But once she got there, her performance was flawless. She’s just a delight
to be around.”
Stevens said that for the first time since he’s been pastor, the church will have to budget for a paid musician. “She’s played for us all these years for no pay at regular services, special events and the services at
Hibbard’s Nursing Care center,” Stevens said. “She is truly an inspiration.”

Thanksgiving pie sale
proceeds benefit the needy
at Partnership Food Pantry
by Mike Lange
GUILFORD – Michelle Patterson likes to come up with unique
ideas to help the Partnership Food Pantry which serves over 130
needy families from Guilford to Greenville.
This year, she’s baking pies for Thanksgiving dinners and donating
most of the proceeds to the pantry. “I’m asking $12 for the pies – $3
goes for the ingredients and $9 will go to Partnership Food Pantry,”
she said.
Patterson is taking orders via phone (343-0035), email (delcait75@
gmail.com) and her Facebook page for pumpkin, pecan, apple, apple
crumb, chocolate cream and blueberry pies until Tuesday, November
24, although earlier orders would be much appreciated.
In addition to her almost-nonstop baking, Patterson and food pantry volunteer Collin Bickford have also been selling Turkey Bucks at
Shaw’s Supermarket in Dover-Foxcroft. “Shaw’s chose the Partnership Food Pantry this year to help out with Thanksgiving donations,”
she explained. “Each Turkey Buck goes toward a box of Thanksgiving
goodies for a family meal. The more we sell, the more Shaw’s will help.
We’ve been pretty busy.”
Patterson, who said she volunteers as much as her health allows,
said she simply enjoys helping people. “It’s a great feeling knowing I
had a part in helping them put food on their tables,” she said. “Everyone has had – or will have – a time or two in their lives where they
need a helping hand.”

Stone Soup Sunday
at Universalist Church
SANGERVILLE – The First Universalist Church of Sangerville
and Dover-Foxcroft will observe Stone Soup Sunday on November 22,
featuring a luncheon based on the popular legend along with an old
time radio program narrated by Eric Laser.
The stone soup legend is traced back to a story about soldiers in
medieval times arriving at a village with an empty cooking pot. But
despite the soldiers’ pleas, the villagers are unwilling to share any of
their food with the hungry travelers.
So the soldiers go to a stream, fill the pot with water, drop a large
stone in it and place it over a fire. They tell the villagers that they’re
making stone soup, but would like a little garnish to give it some
flavors.
After one resident drops some vegetables in it, others follow suit
