People choose careers as a peace officer for many reasons. Some people choose to become a police officer to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Some choose this career field because they like the adrenaline rush. Whatever the reason you choose to become a police officer, one thing remains the same. You chose this job! You may not have been aware at the time you made this decision, all of the aspects of the job, such as the stress that you endure every day, lawsuits, and citizen complaints. But you chose it, and more importantly, you continue to stay the course. Why is this? A career in law enforcement like most other jobs gives you an option. You can quit anytime you want. Now, the question is what do you do, now that you have decided to stay? The correct answer, and hopefully the one that you made or will make is to give your fellow officers, the department, and the community that you serve the best that you have to offer. It always amazes me that when an officer comes out of the academy they always have such a strong desire to help others and fight crime. Too often over a period of time, one can see the dramatic shift in an officer’s performance. One would venture to say that these individual officers did not become a police officer to do nothing. 35 As an individual you must remember this is the job you chose. You chose the good and the bad that comes with the job. When faced with adversity, tell yourself I chose this job. I chose to tackle problems as they present themselves. One chooses to make a difference in people’s lives and the community that they serve. Then do just that. Additionally, as a peace officer, when times become challenging, you must remind those who work with you the same thing. This is the job you chose! So much of your outlook on life has to do with the choices you make every day. Life is about choices. If you make a bad decision, you will (eventually) be held accountable. These daily choices you make affect the job you chose. You can choose to go to work mad after a fight with your spouse. You can choose to become bitter after many years of service with no obvious signs of reward. Or….you can choose to make a difference in someone’s life each day. You represent the best society has to offer. Police work is one of the noblest professions in existence. You embody all that is good in your quest to eliminate evil. You protect the innocent. You help the needy. You are a professional and what an honor it is to serve. And to think, you chose this job. Lt. John Correu is currently on military assignment overseas.
